Title: AMX mouse USB - just a new batch and videos... see the end
Post by: talrek on 17:47, 05 March 17
So,
it's been a long time and one of ||C|-|E||'s  video

So it gave me the envy to make one myself, to see what people can do with the Bryce's USB Mouse Adapter  :o

If you have videos of in-game or other application, i'm interested in that.

And btw i have a small quantity of adapters  : 25€ each + 2,50€ for france, 6,50€ for worlwide

Nice to see that you're still building them. I may still have the video from when I tested the original prototype with OCP.

It is definitely a very cool piece of hardware that makes handling a lot of apps much faster and easier. I always have mine connected  :D

Do we have any example ASM code of how to read an AMX mouse properly - I understand it works like a weird joystick - but I've never owned one to know what they actually do!

Well... yes i still produce some in very little quantities near  20 a year  or on demand.
For me it is a really useful device, for some games, utilities or under SymbOs, FutureOs for example.
Between this adapter and the Dk'tronics clone adapter, i choose yours !!!! i use it more often (it is always connected).

Hy Talrek,
i try your device this Weekend and i´m still in love. (With the little Hardware-thing on my CPC  :D )
I played Arkanoid, and Just a few secods ago Rock n Roll for two hours. And it plays perfect!
I tried a few games like 1943, Scramble Spirits, Flying Shark and other Shmups, which works good, other feeling, but good.

At first i have to found a PS2 compatible Mouse. My Logitech and a few other wont work, because they are not PS2 compatible.

Is there a chart where compatible Mice are checked.
Mine is a Microsoft Wheel Mouse Optical 1.1A and it worked perfect.
The OEM Logitech (HP) MSU 1053 i tried before are not working.
Or does somone know how can we check before buying, if a mouse is compatible?

Thanks for the Mouse Adapte :)

Hy,
i just tried my self build Aimtrak Light gun... It is not PS2-Mouse compatible :( So it does not work...

Would be funny playing Operation Wolf with a I/R Light Gun...

Any two or three button mouse with or without scrollwheel should work. It will have problems with mice that have extra features like lots of extra buttons or hi-res gaming modes, because they rarely support legacy P/S2 Mode and would require its own driver.

Hy Bryce,
most of the cheap OEM-Devices from Dell, HP, Lenovo have no PS2 compatible Modus :(

I found a List here:
http://www.amigawiki.de/doku.php?id=de:models:mouse_liste_ps2
and here: https://www.heise.de/preisvergleich/?cat=mouse&sort=r&bpmax=&asuch=ps%2F2+maus&asd=on&v=e&plz=&dist=&xf=417_PS%2F2+%26+USB and here: http://www.a1k.org/forum/showthread.php?t=38916

When the first USB devices came out, they were almost all PS/2 compatible, but much less of the modern devices are. Microsoft mice seem to have stuck with compatibility longer than others. The list is a useful resource for getting a working device. Unfortunately, my mouse adapter doesn't have enough RAM to support even a basic USB mouse driver :(

Hy||C|-|E||,
on Amazon here in Germany they are still obsolete, and crazy guys take up to 75 Euro for a new one ... My M$ Wheel Optical 1.1A they take 50 Euro for new ones... I boutght it a few years ago for a few bucks...
The prices for this older stuff getting crazier all the time.
So a List for this stuff is very helpful.

There's a PS2 mouse for sale on amazon for 6 pounds, am I missing something?

I understand many usb mice no longer support ps2 converters, but do all PS2 mice work with this bit of kit?

Seems to work, although movement seems a little slow in SymbOS.

I think not: as I have my eye on this 5 pound white one in japan

I think everyone's got fixed on one particular usb logitech mouse - but it sounds like pretty much any ps2 thing will work.

One more parameter is the mouse sensitivity. i also noticed that the speed is not the same depending on the mouse model/technology (optical, ball...)
So on symbos for example, you can have the feeling it is slow with one mouse, and faster with another...

in my case i prefer a "ball" mouse  ;D
Title: Re: AMX mouse USB - just a new batch and videos... see the end
Post by: Bryce on 11:08, 14 March 17
My adapter firmware sets the mouse to it's lowest possible resolution so that it works as closely to an AMX mouse as possible. This may seem slow, but allows you to accurately point and click on the pulldown menus. However some mice will still be a little too fast as their lowest speed is higher.

I've ordered one, and will be interested to try programming for it - so maybe there'll be a special 'mouse control' version of Chibi Akumas.

I see there's some programming info here:
http://www.cpcwiki.eu/index.php/AMX_Mouse (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/index.php/AMX_Mouse)

Though Winape's support seems a bit buggy, even fullscreen the mouse seemed to hit an invisible 'wall' and woudn't scroll further - I think maybe it's having trouble because I'm using multimonitor?

I decided to go 'full retro' and bought a ball mouse from the local "Hard Off" - it cost 100 yen (70p) but it was the last ps2 mouse there - so I guess they are getting rare!

There's no real programming required. It more or less just emulates the joystick inputs, so moving the mouse X millimeters to the right would be the equivalent of pushing a joystick X amount of times to the right and so on.

Just gave the mouse dongle a go on my 6128,  and it works great! I knew that it plugged into the Joystick port, but I assumed that it would need more reprogramming to make it work well, but I gave my game a quick play and it seems pretty nice without any modification - I was also rather surprised to see the mouse wheel works! great stuff!

talrek's version of the dongle has a USB port, so I had to use a weird USB->PS2 dongle for my ps2 mouse (which they sell over in japan for the 'ichigo Jam' pi-alike mini pc) - I also tried a second random USB mouse I bought from the 2nd hand shop and it worked fine too.

Really nice bit of kit!

Thanks. Yes, it auto detects the scrollwheel and activates it if present. My original version included a jumper to disable this if it was causing problems with any software, but I'm not sure if Talrek included that on his version.
There was also a version with PS/2 connector on the PCB, but I only made a limited number of those before I switched to USB.

It looks like he included it - There's a Jumper on the board, so I assume that is what it does

Hi, is the green LED supposed to be ON when USB plugged?

I tried with an optical mouse without success. I need a PS2 -> USB converter to try again with a ball mouse.

When you plug the mouse in the LED should flash once for exactly 1 second when the mouse has been initialised. After that it will flash every time you move the mouse or press a button. If the LED stays on permanently or continually flashes after the mouse is connected, then the mouse isn't compatible.

Hi, well in some case, it happened the led was not flashing and the mouse was not compatible.  :)

Yes, there are two error states. Case one: The mouse responds to the handshake, but the mouse type that it reported is unknown/unsupported by the mouse adapter. This causes the permanent 1 second flash.
Case 2: The mouse doesn't respond to the handshake at all. This won't cause the LED to flash, but the initial single 1 second flash doesn't happen either.
I originally made two different error states for my debugging, so that I knew where things were going wrong. But it would be possible to make both errors cause a permanent 1 second flash.

Bryce.

The mouse needs to support legacy PS/2 protocols, so the older and more basic the mouse, the more chance of it working. Anything with extra buttons, programmable thingies, touch sensors or super-duper 5 trillion dpi gaming sensors isn't going to work. It supports 3 buttons and a scrollwheel, nothing more.

Is this the adapter needed if I want to use a mouse with FutureOS or SymbOS?
If so, please add me to the list as well.

Yes, it's a clone of my AMX Mouse adapter that I designed many moons ago: http://www.cpcwiki.eu/index.php/PS2Mouse (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/index.php/PS2Mouse)
It will work with FutureOS, SymbOS, OCP and many other programs.

I don't find using mice with this adapter particularly usable, but due to it using the joystick protocol at least it's widely supported. The speed of the mouse pointer doesn't reflect the speed of your hand, and the only way to move quickly seems to be moving in diagonals rather than straight lines... I don't think it's the fault of the adapter, but rather the limitations of the joystick interface.
I believe something like the Symbiface II or Albireo interfaces will give the best mouse in SymbOS, although with limited support elsewhere.

Although it's my design, I tend to agree with you. However, there are two reasons for the issue which are pretty hard to get around. One is the fact that the mouse isn't proportional so the speed is constant. The other is the fact that we are used to moving across a screen with >1000 pixels and modern mice are designed with this in mind. Trying to accurately and smoothly move across a screen of just 320 pixels is incredibly difficult and requires slowing the mouse down below what the internal mouse hardware was designed to handle. There is code in the PIC that tries to resolve both of these issues, but I have found that the best results can be achieved by using the oldest mouse you can find with a real ball (not laser).

I have just found the time to try the USB mouse adapter I got in November last year from @talrek (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1195) for the first time, so far I none of my mice worked. I guess I need to purchase a PS2 compatible one, as suggested in this thread? Btw, the LED never shows any sign of activity.

Would this one work? It has USB / PS2 dongle included, so it should be PS/2 compatible protocol:

Have ordered it to see if this fixes my problem.

Taken from here: http://www.cpcwiki.eu/index.php/PS2Mouse#Using_The_Mouse_Adapter (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/index.php/PS2Mouse#Using_The_Mouse_Adapter)

"When the power is applied, the PIC will try to recognise and initialise the mouse. If recognition and initialisation is successful, the LED will blink once for approximately one second. After this any movement of the mouse will make the LED blink. If the mouse fails to initialise (there may be incompatible ones out there or it may just be broken) the LED will flash continuously in one second intervals."

So to answer your question. If the LED never does anything, then it's either not getting power or the device is broken. An incompatible mouse will cause the LED to flash permanently. So don't buy a new mouse until the device is working.

Hi,
I just read all the messages.
Of course you can send it back to me. I will replace it.

Bryce, are you sure ? because I tried some mice and there are some which don't work and the led doesn't blink... I never had the case it blinks permanently.

Anyway, let me know if you want me to send you another one just now, or if you want me to test yours before sending a new one ! [emoji6]

Cheers.

That's good news... that it does not have to blink at all.
Let's wait for my new mouse to arrive, maybe it will just work!

Thanks both so far
Michael

I have 3 different types and only one of them works.
The LED does not light up or blink with the two that does not work
(Logitech B110 and a cheap China model IK83636 - Plexgear).

The one that works is also a cheap China model HM5211

There's only one situation where that could happen and I'm suprised it can. The firmware (at least the original one from me, not sure if that's what Talrek uses) sends a reset and then the initialisation commands. It waits after each command for the mouse to acknowledge. If no answer or an incompatible answer comes back the LED will flash permanently. The only time it won't flash an error is if the reset command wasn't replied to (otherwise it would flash all the time when no mouse is connected). As far as the PS/2 and USB HID specs are concerned all mice should use and acknowledge the reset command, which would make the no-blink situation impossible. So obviously these mice have completely ignored the specs and aren't replying to anything, so the mouse adapter thinks that no mouse is connected.

OK, the new mouse arrived and now it works like a charme! No need for further replacement / exchange action. Thanks for offering.
So, with the wrong mouse attached, you indeed see no LED activity at all.
With a supported mouse, each movement and mouse button click (and even scroll wheel) causes LED blinking.

FutureOS works fine, but with the drawback that this is an AMX mouse and hence, it behaves more like a Joystick than a "real" mouse. But better than a joystick and no mouse in any case!

Ok, good to know. The blinking with each movement is correct, that's how it's meant to function, but obviously the error trapping is missing some situations?

It seems so. For the next revision I would suggest to improve error handler or at least have some initial blinking upon start such that people know its not dead. Because that's how it occured to me with no sign of activity whatsoever with wrong mouse.

Eh, it's a 9 year old project that I no longer build. I wasn't planning on a next version unless people want some new device with more features.
