Hey guys!

Can someone tell me if the attached work with your HxC drive? Used to work fine, but don't any more, on two separate HxC drives, and it's made me a bit worried...

Thanks!

dcdrac

tried the two files no go  computer resets on each file

Gryzor

Ok thanks. Means the files are busted, got to start converting again...

Are you sure ?
A virus maybe ?

Gryzor

i ask this because some users already have this kind of issue before with some DOS based machine.
I got it myself on Atari ST : An memory resident virus have corrupted each image "loaded" into the machine...

Is there this kind of viruses on CPC ?

Gryzor

Ah, in that case I'll be happy to help and provide examples.

No, no viruses on the CPC...

Well, after a close look, this is not a virus problem :
These games are protected and use some sectors with the Deleted data mark (0xF8).
The HFE files that you have provided use the standard Data mark (0xFB) for all sectors.
So i think that these images was generated by an old (very old?) version of the HxC Floppy Emulator software which doesn't support the deleted data mark into the dsk file. For sure these HFE images cannot work correctly !
Just use the latest version of the HxC software and all will be fine.

BTW i have just found that there is some flags support missing in the EDSK writer (HFE->DSK conversion).
This is now corrected. This correction will be present in the next software release (planned this week).
So now copy protected image (HFE,Kryoflux Stream,...) can be converted into EDSK file image correctly.

EDIT :
This is a very old software version:
22/08/2010: HxCFloppyEmulator v1.3.13.0  [...]
-> CPC/ZX (E)DSK :  DELETED SECTOR data mark flag support added.

Gryzor

Thanks; indeed these were among the first games I had converted!

Should I wait for the next release to re-convert things then?

Thanks for your continuing support :)

No no, the DSK to HFE way is already Ok!

Gryzor

Hey, Jeff, can I make a suggestion for the converter software?

It'd be very useful if you could incorporate a FAT sorter to it since the problem with SD use is so bad... I personally use DriveSort or FATSort and that's really fine, but I feel the functionality is so simple it could be implemented to your software...

No, no viruses on the CPC...

Only one as I know, but this would be recognized very obvious.

Does it stay in memory while not rebooted and replicates on other disks?

Bryce

No, It has to be installed on four ROMs in positions 10 to 13 :D

Bryce.

Gryzor

...and I guess, once uncompressed to memory, requires 4MB or so?

It places itself in the DOS ROM and whenever you save something it will save a copy of it. Subsequently you can start what you have seemingly saved, but you will get the message "Virus" on the screen. Therefore I told it's quite obvious.

Oh, and you can reboot as often as you like, you won't get rid of it.

Oh, do you mean SymbOS or BonnyDOS[nb]They both need four ROMs iirc[/nb]

It can write data to a Read only chip?? Wow that must be a really powerful virus! :D

Gryzor

The CPC is more powerful than you think.
