I know why his harddrive failed after his cleaning procedure:

He forgot to dip it into pure acid for at least 20 minutes and after that into water...

Fact: If you have a failing MAXTOR harddrive, you can try to freeze it for few hours, then connect it... In many cases you then can do backups...

Honestly, he did it all wrong.

Hard disks are like pen and paper - you write something, then cross it out and write something else. After a while there's too much mess and you need to tippex out all the crossed out stuff.

Obviously, if you just lightly dust the platters it's not going to get rid of the bad sectors...

Is, the more stupid was to not think that was a joke? 
- What is the interrest to open a harddrive? (it's not an easy task)
- Why he will want to clean the plates that probably look more clean that any glasses at your homes? (probably look less clean after done)

I just expect that harddrive was faultly and the guy decided to see how it look inside and share his "fake" with nerds. Isn't it?

Hehe that's a pretty insane story, cleaning a floppy will probably work ok since they're not sealed units and have nothing like the narrow fault tolerance of a hard disk.

Having said that I did have a stuck A1200 drive several years ago. I was intrigued to see what the problem was and opened it up to find the head stuck. I gave it a quick flick and it released. For the fun of it, I hooked it up with the lid removed and to my surprise it started up and booted perfectly. I was able to clone the drive and then sent it in the way of the bin. If you're very very lucky it might work for a bit but don't expect anything more than that!

I certainly wouldn't dare re over the platters, I don't think this is even possible without ruining the heads unless you're in a factory with the right conditions and right tools.

Yup its sortof like unbaking a cake, the exact geometry of the platters as far as I know is a challenge for even the manufacturer to reinstate. Not that they can't pull data off them (I read this somewhere recently) but its a very complicated process and basically forgoes any possibility of making the drive operational again. Aside from that, the head hovers a minute distance above the platters which is set at the factory and needs to be done precisely. I doubt that even if the guy was lucky enough to align the platters perfectly that he wouldn't have messed up the head.

I also had a hard disk that had a stuck head so I opened it up and hit it with a teaspoon which got the drive working long enough to pull the full 20gb worth of data from it. I decided afterwards to try to use the drive again for a while but it became completely goosed after a couple of days. The HDD is dead Long live the SSD!
