Vortex Discs in 5,25“ PC Drive

Should it be possible to read Vortex 5,25" discs on a Windows PC with an 1,2 MB drive using Winape with Drive set to Vortex and using the TFM Vortex rom?


I get an Drive read error, don't know if the discs are working.

Well, I guess to read a 5.25" disc in a PC it's needed to seal the punched hole at the side of the disc. Right?


Since I use a 5.25" HD drive with my CPC I'm not really sure.

I'd try to use the HxC Floppy Emulator software to dump the disk and then use it on an emulator.

It is possible windows is blocking direct access to the drive and it is not working on winape or other tools.

Actually you only need to generate the Ready Signal, which is bit of a task. See CPC-AI Sonderheft 5/87.

i have managed that winape or cpcdiskxp is trying to acces the drive (led is blinking, you can hear the head) but i am not succesfull on reading data. i don't know if my disks are working. can somebody providing me a vortex format dsk file to try the other way of writing that image to the disk and reading it after that using winape.

Can't attach a DSK in the forum here, but PM me your email then I can send you Vortex DSKs. Would that help?

I insist you try the HxC software, which has a great floppy dump tool and can save directly to dsk too.

with hxc nothing happens if i click on floppy disk dump

Did you install the fdrawcmd driver?


It's needed for most disk dump tools.

yes the low level driver was installed.

i have now tried samdisk. with samdisk i am able to dump the disk and using it with winape and varados rom.

setting the drive as drive b in the emulator is not working in that case i get an Drive B: read fail

The Problem probably is that the Vortex Format is 80 Track DOUBLE DENSITY and the drive is turning at 300 RPM
The 1.2 Meg drives are for HD disks and the drive will run at 360 RPM ?


See if you can find a 80 Track Double Sided Double Density drive Not a 1,2 meg Drive.

how can i read both sides with samdisk?


when i am using the dsk in Winape done from a Disk with content on poth side on using flip in WinApe i get a drive not ready error.
