why are there so many wires on the DDI?  Is that normal?

I am only interested in and have bid on the RAM expansion so anyone fancying the DDI-1 help yourself - but i have been waiting for a memory expansion to come along for my 464 for a long time so i hope i win it.

Nope, he's done a load of mods to it.

Bryce.

Yes, that DDI-1 controller is somehow a mystery: Drive connector changed, more chips added (chip on back of a chip), DOS replaced. Maybe converted for a DS, 80 track drive? God knows. It's somebody who is firm in hardware. But since I gave up all my 464's - this one can go too.

The modified DDI-1 just looks to be expanding the number of Roms.
Similar to what I did - http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/amstrad-cpc-hardware/parados-for-464-users-with-ddi-1-drive/msg48341/#msg48341

The ROM is much bigger, so it's probably latching more bits (I only latched 2 bits to to get 4 roms), my guess is that it's 8 or 16 roms within that big eprom.

Probably using something like a 74ls174 (the extra chip in the lower left) to latch up to 6 bits.

10 minutes to rip it all back out :)

Why should somebody do that?

Because they want it in its original state?

Bryce.

I don't have a dd-1, so if is cheap i go for it.  If modify don't like me i cut all wires XD.

Oh, then it's way better to buy the unmodded of course.  :)
