CPCtelera subforum?

Hello!

I was asked (outside the wiki) if I could create a dedicated CPCtelera forum here, so I'd like to put the idea forward... everyone, let me know if you'd be interested!

mr_lou

I really like CPCtelera. It was a real joy working with it when developing Space Rivals. So I would like a subforum.

However, it's difficult to make a subforum for one framework and not the other. Creating one for CPCtelera would no doubt make other people feel overlooked.

Gryzor

Well, it depends on how popular each framework is at a given moment. If people deem that a specific one is popular one right now so that it would merit its own discussions, support etc etc, I don't see why others would feel overlooked. Whatever works...

That authors of other frameworks who are also visiting this forum might feel overlooked. "Why does CPCtelera get a subforum when my framework doesn't?"
Next comes the people who are using those frameworks.

Just stating. As I said, I really like CPCtelera and would like a subforum. I'm not personally using any other CPC frameworks or game-creation tools.

Gryzor

But that's not a problem. CPCWiki is not promoting the platform through the forum (we may promote stuff on the home page or maybe pin a post or two to help push a project, but we will do that for anyone and everyone who has something worthwhile), it's just responding to the needs of the users. If a platform, *any* platform, is popular enough that discussions need to be more organised, we'll do it...

Bryce

Slippery slope. I'm with mr_lou on this one. Give one person/product a subforum and you'll be bombarded with further requests for anything that gets heavily discussed. Besides, there's already a forum on Github for CPCtelera.

I understand that. But "popular enough" will always be a question of definition. ;-)

How many platforms are there that this could cause a problem though? As for Github, well, the way I see it is, serve people however it's best, not tell them "go to Github", or "go to that other forum"...

Sure enough. But we're pretty laid back that we don't need to have an absoluter cut-off point, do we?

Bryce

I didn't mean just platforms... M4, CPCWifi and other heavily discussed products could also be possible subforum candidates.

As Bryce says, I think that it could be a bit messy, since we would probably end having subforums for many different tools and products. This is not inherently bad, not at all, but much more difficult to maintain and control  :) .

I thought it was a good idea, which is why I "like" @Gryzor's initial post. Why "Like" that post and be skeptical @mr_lou ???

The "Popular Enough" problem could be resolved if the Sub-forum was called "Cross Compilers" which would include SDCC, Z88DK, ccz80, CPC BASIC 3, though much of that is already in the Programming Section and would be a nightmare moving to a sub-forum.   :'(
* Using the old Amstrad Languages :D   * with the Firmware :P
* I also like to problem solve code in BASIC :)   * And type-in Type-Ins! :D

Ok, that makes a bit more sense now.

Let's take a step back and ask people: why would you want a sub-forum on a specific product? Let's see what comes out and how to satisfy the need...

Skeptical?
For the 3rd time, I like the idea about a CPCtelera subforum.
Just tried to give a heads up too.
That's not skeptism. Just sharing thoughts.

Where?  I can't find it.

I was the one asking for a subforum as a way of collecting all previous and future threads here about it in one handy lil place for people folk like me who are trying to get to grips with CPCtelera and want to browse the topics or search through them for a possible solution to a problem.

If it's just for one product, why not give it it's own thread in Hardware and sticky/pin it? It's not like each product is likely to generate a massive load of threads to start with anyway, surely?
Currently playing on: 2xCPC464, 1xCPC6128, 1x464Plus, 1x6128Plus, 2xGX4000. M4 board, ZMem 1MB and still forever playing Bruce Lee.
No cheats, snapshots or emulation. I play my games as they're intended to be played. What about you?

Just one thread for a programming tool that can have a lot of very specific queries and could get very messy if a new person asks about a previous query that needs more answering while other people are discussing a newer one.

Why not, it would be a lot of easier to find specifically information to cpctelera.

No it isn't skepticism, I got confused, sorry!  :-[

Perhaps, I just thought it maybe tricky in tracking down all those threads.  8)

Ok, here's another thought: what if we, indeed, created a subforum for each major and/or popular product? Truth be told, I find it quite chaotic to have to go through the wifi thread to find a piece of info, whereas it could have its own subforum, tucked away nicely below the main HW forum...

robcfg

Maybe put them as subforums under the programming section?

Programming

+- CPCTelera
|
+- etc...

Gryzor

In this case, that's what I was thinking. Bryce does have a valid point as to where does it stop; but maybe we could/should consider/count how many such subfora would need to be created? How many projects would warrant their own subforum?

pelrun

Github issues aren't a forum, they're a bug tracker. It's a real pain for a maintainer when users abuse them; you either get your bug reports buried in a pile of "help me" or you spend forever pruning the thing.

I think adding subforums is preferable to the existing 100+ page threads for things, but that's just me. And realistically, how many major projects are there here? If we hit five, we're doing well.
