Title: Forum installation and loss of functionality
Post by: Gryzor on 14:08, 20 September 16
Hello guys,

As discussed before, I'm preparing to do a fresh install of the forum. I have a pretty good idea about what this entails, but computers being what they are, some issues must be expected... I'd be most grateful if you could report these here. I plan to populate this post with issues as they are found and work through the list.

One thing I know for sure: ALL modifications to the plain-vanilla functionality of the forum will be lost. This means, for instance, no youtube embedding, no Cpt Picard facepalms no Tapatalk, stuff like that. I plan to slowly re-add them, and I have kept a list of most things, but again, do let me know, as this will also help me judge the importance of each of these modifications.

Thanks!
G

Feature list:
Maybe won't do:

Put Tapatalk at the top of the priority list. I can live without Facepalms (by ignoring certain posts :D ), but Tapatalk is a must as I'm sure it is with other members too.

Bryce.

Done :)

I populated the list with the things I have noticed. As you can see, it's tons of work...

You'll be fine, I don't post much.

I'll just leave these here so that I can cut and paste them as needed while the installation is happening :)

That's one way to do it, yes.

Completed backing up, will probably do the installation tomorrow.

You can leave Shoutbox off the list completely as far as I'm concerned. 50% of the comments are people mistaking it for the search function anyway :D

Lol, you think it's as low as 50% teeheehee?

Would it be possible to get rid of the " Expand Quote " and the " Shout Box "

Thanks     Ray
Title: Re: Forum installation and loss of functionality
Post by: Gryzor on 09:55, 21 September 16
I'll run a poll about shoutbox, perhaps. I think we did something like that in the past and people actually wanted it...

The Expand Quote is part of something else, but hopefully it'll get fixed so as to not overlap with actual content.

Take away the shoutbox and just give @SuTeKH/Epyteor (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=466)
and @Mav their own thread  ;D

The "New" flag on updated threads is the same colour and format as the thread title, making it barely noticable.

@Bryce : hm? Here it's as it always was, orange and quite noticeable... can you post screenshot? Maybe we're not talking about the same thing?

@robcfg : yes, that's in the "tab" entry in the first post, it's a hack of sorts where I must insert a custom tab for them.

@arnoldemu: working on likes and mentions this very moment. I'm having some trouble with them due to the server configuration and some hard-coded parameters, but I'll get there :) I think you had a Gravatar generated avatar, and this is on the list in the OP, as are country flags, so all these are in the works :)

Yes, it's the rounded orange square with the wor "New" that I am talking about. Maybe I need to restart my browser or something. I'll report back later when I've checked this from a different computer.

Maybe I missed something (you don't have this on your list?):
Before reinstalling, I can see the newest posts on the starting page of the forum (without login).
Last year (this year) the E-Mail notification was broken, when someone writes me a PM or writes a reply to a notified thread.

I think you're referring to two separate things?

Recent messages (*new* messages for users who are not logged in is impossible) is, I think, part of another modification which is on the list, let's check later (why not leave it at always logged-in?).

The email is another thing and a big headache of mine, so I'll tackle it as soon as the rest is fixed.

Yes, alerts work. But I could not get rid of the pop up box when I "clicked" the alert button. This was on a iPad mini. In the end I used the browser back button. It may work okay on a PC.

Keep at it  ;D

When Bryce posted about this, I saw the orange labels as you. But now I see what Bryce is seeing. Instead of the orange "New", there's just "New" with the same font and same colour as the name of the thread.

I use the bookmark functionality to quickly get to the AA type-ins thread. Until this is turned back on I've noted where to navigate to the thread, so it's not a show stopper but would be a nice thing to have back eventually.

I don't know if it was fixed prior to the reboot (or on your current to-do list), but the "invalid attachment filetype" problem still exists. I know the troll was shouting and screaming about it for ages, but (and it pains me to say this) I think he has a point.

I tried to reply to Joseman's request for my MI music and (accidentally) attached an .sks file to the post. It then said that .sks was an invalid filetype and gave me the option to go "back" and change the filetype.
I then created a .rar file and attached that instead, but the "POST" button didn't work... I had to go back to the thread and press reply and start all over again!

Now, I realise there's such a thing as copy/paste, but if you forget to CTRL^C and you've written a MacDeath-sized reply, then that's about 10 hours wasted!
Title: Re: Forum installation and loss of functionality
Post by: Gryzor on 10:21, 22 September 16
Wait, I'm really confused now. What exactly is the "invalid attachment filetype" problem? The fact that not every single file type is allowed?
Title: Re: Forum installation and loss of functionality
Post by: SuTeKH/Epyteor on 10:29, 22 September 16
Ok... maybe this wasn't fixed, but I do remember the troll complaining about it!

I tried to attach a file to this post and pressed the "POST" button! (Image 1)

It said there was an error with the file and and I pressed the "Back" button to change the attachment! (Image 2)

I changed the file to a .rar and tried to press the "POST" button, but nothing happens! (Image 3)
The only way you can post is to go back into the thread and press "Reply" and start again!

Yep, the "New" icon is now nice and orange  :D

Can we either loose the "Top 30 Stats" from the front page, or at least shift them to the bottom of the page. They are more annoying than useful IMHO.

And thanks for doing this, it's a lot of effort to get back to "normal" but hopefully it will be worth it  ;D

Quick work there Gryzor  :D

On the subject of "active topics", a search found these results:

How to see active topics? How to see active topics? (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=365737.0)
"view active topics"? "view active topics"? (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=516166.0)

I'm not sure if any of the solutions are what we had before. Or whether you want to use customization like this just yet.

Most monitors are wide and pretty large these days, making the viewable area 100% of the viewport way too wide for comfortable reading. Same as with every web site...

The quote tab that blocked the first line of a reply can go if you're getting rid of stuff.
I had to guess what people were saying and I dint think people said what I imagined :D

Definitely need the new replies box that was at the top of the main page which also told you if you had read the replies or not.
Have to go through every individual forum now to see what's new.
Counter productive.

Right if you consider that all  user use they browser in full screen. That's clearly not my case and I am sure I am not the only one  ;)
Now I have to use more of my real estate to see as much as before  :picard:
If at least you can make sure you use 100% width up to 1280 pixel wide  :)

Same as with every web site...
You mean that next step is to have a fullscreen picture that zoom and darken on mouse hoover, with only a register now as home page :picard2:
Most of the sites that does this 80% thing is to reserve space for skinning (read advertising)

Title: Re: Forum installation and loss of functionality

No, unfortunately I can only set it to either a fixed px width or a percentage of the viewport...

And to reply to your edit, no; it's the same reason newspapers use multiple columns instead of having text going from one side of the page to the other...

I've been v impressed with how transparent this reinstall has been. Excellent work @Gryzor !

I'm afraid that at the moment the Timeline feature in Tapatalk isn't working but was earlier today. Not sure what drives this though but thought I'd mention it in case it helps.

I hate, hate, hate Tapatalk. Always problems. Didn't touch a thing, and the Tapatalk control panel on their site half reports it's all right, half says it can't find the plugin. I'll try some more... seems to work for other functions and not the timeline, have no fucking idea how that would be possible.

...but, thanks for your kind words :D

I was going to report the Tapatalk issues to you, but looks like you already know :)

One other issue I have. When I load the page I get a window asking whether this site is allowed give me notifications. All ok if I say yes and the notifications work. However, if I say "Not now" it re-asks the question every time I change post/thread/page within the Forum. Extremely annoying.

Bryce.

This is a browser issue, I believe. The question does not come from the forum, but from the browser. The forum tries to push a notification regardless, it's the browser that accepts or denies it. Can you take a look at your prefs?
Title: Re: Forum installation and loss of functionality
Post by: Bryce on 10:31, 23 September 16
Yes, but it didn't do that before the re-install and other Forums don't have this problem. I have found a way to block it at the moment, but it means browsing with settings that I don't like using.

Notifications didn't even work before, so that's no surprise :D

Works just fine for me with Chrome or Opera; I denied notifications once, hasn't asked me again despite furious F5ing or clicking on random pages. I must assume it's your browser settings.

As I said (please correct me anyone if I'm wrong) notifications are pushed regardless, it's up to the browser to decide what it does with them.

Youtube embedding added. Why was I sure I had already done this?

It now has a bit more functionality, as apart from the normal, old YT button there are two more that will embed YT searches and YT users.

So am I, but I use the private browsing option which doesn't allow me to block it permanently. It offers "accept notifications" (which I don't want) or "Not now" which results in the question being re-asked on every click.

And btw: Not sure if it's due to the current changes you are doing, but the famous "CPCWiki Forum delay" is still there.

Bryce.

Edit: One last comment: Does the Forum have to be soo skinny? I feel like I'm reading a shopping list and a huge part of the screen is just being used as a blank border.
Title: Re: Forum installation and loss of functionality
Post by: Gryzor on 12:33, 23 September 16
Well that's a very peculiar use, in the sense that how many users browse the forum in private tabs... (I guess it kind of makes sense to not save site prefs when in incognito mode!).

So far, at least for me there has only been one single delay ( a few minutes ago) when we run some updates on the server, other than that I haven't seen the slightest problem...

And the "huge part of the screen" is actually 20% :D Width is set at 80% for reasons discussed above. I'll see about making it 85% maybe.

Then that bit had never worked, because it is noticably thinner than it used to be. 85% is an improvement.

First, I don't like the shout box. I would prefer it to go so I voted on that.

I do like Mav's and your commentry on demo parties and the eurovision though :) It's refreshing and honest.

My comment was said as a joke because at one time it seemed like it was just you and Mav talking to each other via the shoutbox ;)

I have a lot of respect for the contributions you both give to the CPC.

Instead of the shoutbox, maybe a forum thread could be opened for each party or for the eurovision and at least I can keep track of the conversation :)

Has Tapatalk gone belly up this morning?

It's not working properly at the moment. If you access threads from the 'Home' section it says there's a problem with the forum, but strangely if you navigate through the forum via the 'Forums' section you can get to posts without issue. 'Timeline' is completely broken at the moment, 'Unread' works as does 'Subscribed' but 'Participated' doesn't and just shows 'No Topic' like 'Timeline'.

Anything we can do to help troubleshoot @Gryzor (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1) ?

No, but in my settings the only type enabled is "Receive forum newsletters, announcements and important notifications by email."

I have had no emails from this forum recently (and yes I checked in my spam folder, unless the forum is using the name violet and you have sent me an invoice for something that I have never ordered...).

A couple/few of the slowdowns during the past few hours may have been because of me trying some stuff on the server.

However, the reason I've been testing some stuff is because apparently we're under some sort of attack. You can check the list of online users. I took a couple of steps and am waiting to see what happens, by restricting the amount of stuff Guest can do.

Strangely, most of the offending IPs are from.... France! That's certainly weird and it means I can't block them like I'd do with the entire China at server level...

Does anyone know of a tool that does a geolocation conversion of IPs if given a full list? Because at the moment I'm researching each IP manually.

Something like this?

https://www.maxmind.com/en/geoip-demo (https://www.maxmind.com/en/geoip-demo)
Bulk IP lookup locator - Enter IP Addresses to find their IP Location (http://www.ipligence.com/iplocation)
Bulk Lookup Tool - Bulk IP and Domain Lookup Tool - MxToolBox (http://mxtoolbox.com/BulkLookup.aspx)

I'm not sure what are the restrictions.

If you're in a Unix like box:

whois IP | grep "Country"

Is not geoip, but will tell you the owner of the range.

About the slow down. I know this is just a guess but firefox has http2 enabled. I was seeing slow access to the wiki, but when I disabled that in firefox it was a lot quicker.

So, perhaps cpcwiki host gets some requests for http2, ignores them and this looks like the spamming?

Ah, that's what happens when you use non-user friendly URLs... All URL parsers have their limits, I'm afraid.

Hmmm. I've looked around, seems like FF may have a bug that indeed makes http/2 load slower. However, since we don't use HTTP/2 it shouldn't matter because it's supposed to automatically fall back. If that doesn't happen then probably FF has a more serious bug. But maybe it was a one-off coincidence?

But I don't think this would lead to ghost sessions looking like a bot net trying to find its way in. There are dozens (140 right now) of Guest users browsing Downloads - obviously they found the entry point and are browsing through all the entries trying to do who knows what. Also, traffic is through the roof.

Look at any Quote with the Expand / Collapse Tag. The Tag names are reversed: ie: If you click it when it says Expand it collapses and vice versa.

Look at the arnoldemu quote here for example: Forum installation and loss of functionality (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/cpcwiki-discussion/forum-installation-and-loss-of-functionality/msg134392/#msg134392)

Ok guys, due to some screw ups with some mods, an in-between SMF update (damn it!) and spammers trying to get in, I reverted to non-modded. Sorry about that, but thanks for all your feedback. I'll start rebuilding tomorrow... *sigh*

Well, arnoldemu's comment described the error pretty well.

It's working again, now that you reverted to the standard configuration.

Good Luck for the second try! :)

It fixed my issue with not being able to expand/collapse the sections on the main page too (with the "-" button on the right). My guess is the "recent posts" box was breaking this?

Thanks, guys, and again, apologies. I'm not too sad about the time wasted to tell you the truth because the process and your feedback gave me a cleared idea about some things.

Not finished yet - for instance you'll see that Quick Reply does not work, so there are some left overs to be cleaned.

@MaV : thanks man :)

@Bryce : okay, once again Tapatalk proves how fucked up it is; the TT folder on the server is still there, but the modifications were removed AND the hooks into the system manually verified to have been uninstalled. And yet the TT console reports it works fine, so one has to wonder what does what with their plugin :D :D

@PulkoMandy : indeed it has, it was the first thing I checked. Thanks for confirming :)

Now, if anyone's got any idea about what to do with the bots that have been attacking our forum, I'd be very interested to hear from you. If you take a look at who's online you'll see that there are about 150 Guest entries doing god-knows-what (unknown function; I bet this is them trying to access the downloads that don't exist any more). They obviously keep hitting again and again because our server line is being maxed out...

Not that you would want to do this for any length of time, but for the time being, is it possible to only allow the IP's of existing registered users (White list) until the attack subsidies?

Mark

Title: Re: Forum installation and loss of functionality
Post by: Gryzor on 18:50, 28 September 16
Disable which Guest settings?

As for whitelisting, not very practical - I'd have to do a report of last IPs used (no way to do it easily) and then firewall it like that, plus users do change IPs etc etc... :(

Didn't read the whole thread, but is it known that the "unread" link appears on my notebook (Android/Chrome) but not on my desktop (Windows 7) ?

EDIT : OK found it, but now i need two clicks instead of one to access the full list of unread topics. Not a big deal.

But the difference of behaviour is still puzzling.

Hi @Gryzor :  I really appreciate you effort to make to forum better and update things and so on.
However after a month of hard work it seems like the most best functions are gone, like "Replies" or "Unread".

Maybe it's just time to forget about all that new fancy crap and get an old copy of the system out, which did actually work.

That's just an suggestion. Good luck with all this stuff.  :)

I only have an silly idea, but I'll post it here in case someone can brainstorm on it.
I thought if there was some encryption system program for our Amstrad to decrypt when the server is online that should fix all them bots. But if it was just one of those type what's in the image sort of thing then that should work before going onto the forum.

It seems more logical to have it at the top but personally I mainly access this via TapaTalk on my phone for convenience so would rather that worked. However at least I can use Unread if others feel it's better at the top!

Some forum admins won't use Tapatalk because it does not use proper tie in methods (it uses unauthorised methods). Atari-Forum is still awaiting answers about this and has a ticket open with Tapatalk.

I did not use it much when I did have it. But when I found out that the Atari-Forum Admin considered it to be a security risk, I removed it from my devices.

But you can put the unread list at the bottom of the page without effecting TapaTalk as far as I could see.
It was somewhat different at the bottom, but let's see...
The three different flavours of the unread list (seperate page, at the top of the main index page / 'home' page, at the bottom of the main index page / 'home' page) have differences.

The seperate page list (via the link in the top short-cuts / links on the main index page) only includes posts with new unread posts.

The version that was at the top of the main index page showed both posts with new unread posts and also still showed threads that had recent posts but where you had read the all the posts. I think this version would be better described as active topics / active threads. I find this version the most useful, as for me, it's the fastest way of keeping up-to-date with recent threads I may be interested in. And I get positive conformation that a thread I have recently read does not have any new posts when I click through to the "home" page.

The unread list at the bottom of the main index page gives less information, and is harder to use with touch screen mobile devices (at least with my fingers, I have to try to be very accurate with my touch, or I end up looking at the wrong thread).

I don't use Tapatalk so don't much care if it breaks, but do respect that this forum does have users that enjoy using it. So although personally I would like the version of the unread list that appears at the top of the 'home' page. I can fully understand the dilemma...

Completely agree with @1024MAK (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1522) .

Was there issues with TapaTalk before the re-install? - As it had the proper "Recent threads".
Title: Re: Forum installation and loss of functionality
Post by: Gryzor on 18:44, 30 September 16
I don't get the advantage of looking at "active" threads where you have read all the posts. How is it 'keeping up' looking at the same thing (essentially, since there are no replies)?

I was looking into server-side includes to see how to manually add the functionality we're discussing, but I vowed that I'd do no manual hacks this time around, at least until SMF 2.1 is released (because much will break then). I wonder... perhaps a separate page with recent posts/topics, stats etc? Would that be of any use? Or maybe we should try a portal-like environment? Take a look at http://simpleportal.net/ (http://simpleportal.net/) - fully customiseable...

@Duke (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1624) : I think that yes, there were issues indeed. Probably because TT, instead of relying on the SMF engine to pull the relevant info, it tried to brute-force its way...

Title: Re: Forum installation and loss of functionality

So, I gotta say I like the portal. But there are a few things that can be improved.

- as others have mentioned, the Recent Posts tile on the right side is redundant. You could probably place the Search tile there, so it is more prominent.
- I'd prefer the Board Stats and Top Posters tile to go. I don't see the point of having them here.
- I'm not sure what the Calendar tile does. Some dates are fat, but clicking on them seemingly does nothing.
- Top Topics could be placed a little higher to be more effective.

Also, if I had my way, I'd place a Pillory tile at the topmost, so that people could throw shit at those who have a proven track record of being troublesome. But that's just my lesser noble me. :D

Being used to the overview on the front page, we forget other options. I've changed my bookmark to the Unread overview now, which is almost equally good. The advantage of the recent posts is that you keep seeing recent posts regardless of having read those posts or not. But I can live with the unread overview.

The answer is simple: convenience.

It's not always clear in which category the thread ended, and if want to re-read it, I'd have to search for it at times. A recent thread that's still in the list is a lot easier to "find" again.

"The simple search field located at the top of the default SMF theme will, when viewing topics, filter search results to just that topic. The same applies to boards as well - when viewing a board the simple search field will filter the search to just results in that particular board." Have you tried that?

Yeah, it's not as obvious as it should be... it'd be much easier to use/understand if there was a separate search field.

One strange think is happend to me.

When i copy and paste a text. With my mobile.

I view the copy o.k in my response  Window in the forum. And then when i post It:

The changed in the letters size.

Thats the reason some of my post appear in miniature. I was Simply made copy&paste and then when i post chaos ocurr.

Yeah, that's an obscure bug with copying and pasting where some of the formatting is carried. It's easy to solve though, just hit the "Remove Formatting" icon (it's the next-to-last button with the two "A") to remove sizing...

If it is a complex reply, I often edit and type in a notes / notebook app first ;)

Hi Gryzor
Today Tues 03-Jan 2017 at 18:15 Australian time
0915 Your time .
The CPC Wiki (Forum) exhibited the following.
I was trying to save a reply on the forum and it got stuck.
I then loaded another tab to see if the Wiki was working it was.
But the Forum was still down
It eventually came back on line ?? But very clunky
I am typing this while waiting for it to come back on line

Just realized that LIKE button is missing in Tapatalk. May it be that one of your plugins is faulty or not supported anymore?

Am I the only one bugged by the lack of LIKE functionality?

Sorry, somehow I missed your previous post.

No way it can be done, since it's not a core forum functionality but is provided by an add-on, therefore Tapatalk can't use it I'm afraid...
