Title: Spam attack under way
Post by: Gryzor on 19:28, 29 July 19
Hello guys,

Just to let you know that the last few days we have seen increasing levels of spammer attacks on the forum (at first from Ukraine, but it has spread). I have taken some more drastic measures and so far from what I see no spam has gotten through, but there are two possibilities:

-even though I have proactively whitelisted all members, some may encounter issues, especially depending on their network configuration (workplace security measures can play a role). You may see some 403 pages. If that occurs, do drop me a line.
-inevitably some spam may pass through; if that's the case, you know what to do ;)

Cheers!

Yeah it's not like they're targeting is specifically. Those IPs have very increased activity all over the world lately.

I'm admin of a spanish forum and we decided to block registrations for a couple of weeks, as I've deleted almost 200 spam users during the past 4 days...

For the time being my anti spam measures are blocking most of it. Some still get through to registration though and I have rejected perhaps a couple of dozen since yesterday, but I'll see about shoring up the defenses. Not closing registrations for the time being, I think...

I also got tired of spammers and hackers, so I added my own blocking filter at IndieGameMusic.com

In short, it did some checks to see if it might be a hacker attempt, based on the URLs, and then if 10 of these weird requests were made from the same IP I simply blocked the IP.

Then 10 years later I was fiddling with an htaccess file and made an error resulting in an "Access denied" message for myself. Having forgotten all about my block filter I had to write to the support of my webhost after being denied access for a whole week. They found out it was my own block filter.  :-[

But the internet will soon be useless, with all the increasing spammers and increasing ads everywhere. The future is (offline) diskmags!

Regarding htacces, we've all been there (even if we didn't have to call support) :picard2:

As for spam and ads, you don't see much of either here, do you?  8)

Not on the forum itself no. But you gotta click links every now and then.  ;)
