Title: Artificial Intelligence & CPC Games
Post by: ronaldo on 12:59, 18 July 17
Hi guys,

I'm planning of making a list of Amstrad CPC games that have any kind of interesting Artificial Intelligence (enemies that do something more than basic patterned behaviour). The idea is to find good examples to use in lessons.

So, your knowledge is really valuable in this matter. Which games do you know that make interesting use of Artificial Intelligence in Amstrad CPC? Links to the games and videos are appreciated.

Thank you for your help! :)

- Purple Saturn Day (http://www.cpc-power.com/index.php?page=detail&num=1723) (the second and third stages have very different IA).
- Space Duel (http://www.cpc-power.com/index.php?page=detail&num=3460) (really impressed by this IA !).

- 3D chess (http://www.cpc-power.com/index.php?page=detail&num=210) (Classic but i never win the IA)

Not sure if you could really call it artificial intelligence, but the enemies in Commando were way to clever for my liking (or I was just shite at the game, which is much more likely).

I thought "not getting killed" was the key, but I couldn't manage that either.

Kung Fu Master: perhaps not exactly "AI" but the "midgets" or little people on level 2 onwards has always made me smile. Not exactly a game that you would normally recommend as most of the enemies just run up to you and grab you. Now if you are standing up the midgets will also run up to you and grab you legs. However if you kneel when they approch they will instead jump up at you instead (to avoid your low kick/punch). To counter their somersault you need to again stand up and "headbutt" them.

Rock N Wrestle: probably one of most variable wrestling games out there and easily the one with the most actions & probably the toughest as well. The way they managed to put so many different moves in there on a single button single stick joystick is by defining different moves depending on how you are located not only to the enemy but also screen direction, standing/on the floor + ropes/corner. Again donno if this is AI worthy but but you and the enemy can miss attacts as position/range matter. The enemy can somewhat doage and thanks to the "energy" bar below you/enemy can break free in differnet situations. Like if you/enemy theow down the opponent early on both can break free from the 1,2,3 countdown. This is also why the enemy will send you thru a long random is sequence first to suck your energy dry before attempting final takedown.

Frank Brunos Boxing: Quite different acting enemies even though the idea on your side is the same (get your energy up and punch them out). Trying to find their "weak spot" is a challenge while not getting murdered yourself.

Renegade, Target Renegade, IK, IK+, Sai Combat, Yie Ar Kung Fu 1 & 2, Barbarian (palace), Street Fighter: probably not worth mentioning. Not that the games are all bad but they do tend to have enemies that just seem to randomly "flail" at you hoping for a cheap hit or spam their ranged "fireball". Again not that games like Renegade/target is bad, but the enemies being a bit one-sided put all the work onto the player that have to outpace them.

Lots of other types of games like racers that probably could be of interest, but its harder to see if the enemies stay competitively close to your or just drives off mindlessly. Also many games has NPC's like the enemy wizard in Feud where you wonder if he actually walks around the maze gathering herbs or is it a trick. Even Ghostbusters funny green ghost's random behavoir while trying to avoid getting trapped has to  have some math behind it.
