Voted.

But it was a close call and a difficult choice between R-type, Light Force (which I had played to bits back in the day) and Flying Shark. Yes, I know FS is usually trashed, but I really loved it...

Why are you asking?

Wow, X-Out is trailing, I'd never have thought that. Looks like its gonna be a straight fight between Light force and R-Type. Did nobody like UN Squadron?

Its a project for the book, I think you'll like it.

It is hard to vote : my vavorite games are not in the list : Arkanoid, Boulder Dash, Commando, Prohibition, Evil Donjon :)

Flying Shark! ;)

voted p47 thunderbolt.

why?

It's a good shooter, well presented, and nice graphics.

r-type has good playability, but I enjoyed p47 more.

mission genocide has really nice scrolling, but I found was very boring.

Yeah, P47 really is a nice one, so hard to choose only one. Perhaps Silkworm might also have made the list.

Embarrassed to admit I haven't tried most of them. So I'll have to download them and play a bit before voting.

Tough choice - went for P47 in the end - surprised to see it in the lead as much as I love it!

Title: Re: Best game???

Hello,

I voted Flying shark. It is not technically the best shooter, but it's the only one I took pleasure to play with. Other ones are too slow or simply boring...

I voted for Game Over II (Phant'is in Spain).

It's has not the best graphics, it's not specially difficult, but it was super fun. And as you could play the two parts of the game very fast, that made it a superb game to play when you had very little time.

I still play it from time to time

"Light Force" is a great shooter with nice graphics and gameplay, but "Mission Genocide" is also a nice shooter and offers the best vertical scrolling on planet earth.
Mmmmh... ???

Silkworm, because you could play 2Players with it.

But where is Forgotten Worlds ? it was a freaking great game !

I had to choose between Mission Genocide and Mr.Heli, and I went with Genocide.

Smooth movement is important to me, and the minimalistic graphics are somehow charming. Mr.Heli has neat music, but the gameplay in Genocide is more exciting to me. Yes it does tend to get a little boring, but as levels progress it helps. I got to level 3 where things began to get quite interesting.

A lot of the games on the poll has very annoying sound effects that simply ruins the game experience in my opinion. And no matter how impressive graphics a game may have, chunky movement renders great graphics useless in my world.

Xout was also interesting though, but not quite enough.

I've never played Mission Genocide before, but as it looked amazingly much like a C64 game, we searched for a C64 version and found it. Then we played the game on both machines at the same time. They are 99% the same, but the sprites move smoother on the C64 (as they do most of the time), but overall a very neat Amstrad version.

Most of my CPC games are budget one, since back in the day, $45 or so was a bit much for a game, so for me, it was a toss up between Mission Genocide and Bosconian '87.  Love the music on Bosconian, but in the end Mission Genocide won out simply for fun factor.  Flying Shark is the only other game I've played to any great extent, and discounted it due to the annoyance of bullets being hard to spot at times.  Nothing worse than bullets that are the same colour as most of the background.

The graphic of X-Out looks superb, almost like an Amiga-Game. Nice colours!
Mr.Heli looks also great, quite similar to the Atari ST-Version.
But I vote for Mission Genocide, because it´s really fast and exciting, and super-smooth.

PS: Does someone like Zynaps?

Yeah! Uridium is more easy!!! And a whole lot of fun!!! The music - didn't know that it was the same composer, but yes, now since you tell it! Both title tracks are AWESOME!!! Sometimes I start Uridium, just to hear the sound. I also put it into ROM to be able to just start the game by one RSX command :-)

I voted for P47 'cause it's really a great game both technically and playability wise. Mr. Heli was also one of my all-time favourites partly because of the catchy tune. Never could get into Mission Genocide although technically it does have the most advanced hardware scrolling, shame about the rest of the game.

Indeed, Zynaps has lousy level design in the first 2-3 stages.
Then, it becomes much better!
Then, it repeats the design.
And then, it's over *lol*

Ich glaube bei die Spectrum version von Zynaps gibt ein ende aber nicht für Amstrad.

Or in plain english: I think that the Spectrum version of Zynaps has an end, the Amstrad version is an infinite loop.

No, really, we should keep the languages seperate.
That's why we made a German forum section.
It's of course no problem when a non English talking person posts in German, or also a non German talking person posts in English
when a thread is interesting.
But the most people here talk English, too, so they should keep posting in English then.

Wasnt going to vote, because I couldnt decide between my favourite few on the list, cant pick one over the other...  But I'd also noticed over the last week the surprising lack of love for Mr Heli, so it can have my vote.
Title: Re: Best game???

I always thought Forgotten Worlds was an average conversion of a quality arcade game on the amstrad CPC, too slow compared to the other versions. I can't understand how Mr Heli is trailing behind, that was an excellent shooter, and i'm massively suprised at the lack of love for X-Out.

Mission Genocide on top eh? I can understand why, amazing scrolling, good graphics and a rock hard challenge... I thought the difficulty might have put some off, but good to see its a firm favourite.

I think maybe saying "which has the best playability" would have been a better question? I think technically mission genocide is good, but for playability it is boring. p47 however is good fun and is the one I voted for.

mr.heli is also good fun, but I liked p47 more.

I always thought Forgotten Worlds was slow...

I don't see your point, the best game would include the best playability... ka

I think technically mission genocide is good, but for playability it is boring. p47 however is good fun and is the one I voted for.

Not according to the poll... Mission Genocide was the bomb. P47 didn't have very good enemy movement, the enemy basically came straight at you. Predicatable and a little boring, and it pissed me right off that the game just loops at the end. Wasn't that impressed, graphically its good.

mr.heli is also good fun, but I liked p47 more.

Each to their own, but your wrong  ;)

The problem is that for exemple I didn't played some of those game at the CPC era.

X-Out or Mr.Heli or P47... we hadn't them in Valence (no cracked version was shared) so it has no influence on my youth.

Also, forgotten world had it's speed running irregulary, but it was so much fun because of the coin-op 2up player option.

It was a good memory for be because I coulkd share agood moment with by big brother instead of just seeing him play (he was sort of aselfish bitch sometimes.. >:( )

The same with Silkworm (my vote) : it was a shared experience.

I never played over half those games on the poll, including Mission Genocide. But I tried them all before voting, and went with Genocide.

Interestingly, as it looks a lot like a C64 game, I thought it was ported from the C64. Surely enough there is a C64 version as well, so I assumed I was right.
But later, when searching for a synopsis about the game, I found an interview with the author online somewhere, in which he says that all this games originated on the CPC - so it's actually the C64 version of Genocide which is a port from the CPC.

I'd like a CPC version of Genocide with cheat though, so I can see all the levels.  :)
Currently only the C64 version has cheat, but I'm not playing on the C64...  8)

You won't have the same appreciation for Genocide if you cheat your way through. Just needs a bit of practice is all. The first time I completed it, I was like how bloody good was that, but yes it's hard. I can complete on pretty much every other go.

I could never understand why they didn't build games around all levels of difficulty... i.e. easy, medium or hard. No excuses for new games, they should all feature this option. I was playing God of War 3 the other day and getting my arse handed to me by one of the gods, and the game had the cheek to ask me if I wanted to drop down to an easier difficulty, now this is taking things too far, and I gave the tv the two fingers and marched on, eventually.

I'm afraid I'm not keen to revisit past projects like that, it takes time away from working on ideas and code for new projects.  There's a pretty good chance of a difficulty level option appearing in future projects though!

Totally disagree... it prolongs the life of a game, I find some games way too easy, hence no challenge, and wished I could up the anti. On the other hand I've games from 20 years ago that I'm unable to beat because they are way too hard. Dude, everyone’s skill level is different, this option should have been, and hopefully will be included in future CPC releases. I'd also like to see new games take advantage of the two button controller; this would breathe even more life and longevity into new games. Probably dreaming now, but network connectivity aware co-op gaming for the CPC?

Adding difficulty levels is more work, and more data, so it's not easy to fit it all in.
But I will consider your comments for my future games.

This is an attribute of a great game with great gameplay:
It´s difficult, but not unfair, so you have the chance to learn how to play and finish it.
In this case you don´t need levels of difficulty.

In the case of games such as R-Type, they got the balance just right... but sadly in many games I’ve played over the years, the judgment and balance have been slightly off. And many programmers themselves have admitted to this. For instance 'Contra' on the NES, probably the most difficult game on earth, will hand you your arse over and over. In fact not many people have ever completed the game, and try as you may; I bet not many ever will either, Battle Toads is another classic example.

I believe it’s one of the reasons the Dreamcast is loved so much, many of its games, especially the shoot-em-ups came with multitudes of choice, and therefore if experienced, made its games accessible to many gamers. If the gamer felt up to it, an ultimate difficulty was there for the taking.

Maybe, it’s just me... but I’d prefer the choice in my games.

We (LuBlu Entertainment (http://www.lublu.dk)) had the same thoughts as ukmarkh when we developed our mobile games. We wanted to target a lot of players in different age-groups, so we implemented 3 difficulties in our 3 games.

Just want to say that I'm with you ukmarkh!  ;)

But judging from our online highscores from our game Ukko's Journey (http://www.ukkosjourney.com), it looks like most people never notice the option.  :-X
81% of the uploaded highscores are from normal difficulty. 16% easy mode, and 3% hard mode. Based on those stats, I agree with arnoldemu that it's too much work compared to how much it's actually used... (or else I can pretend we just happened to find the correct difficulty for the majority...   ::) )

I'll probably keep implementing 3 difficulty-modes anyway though...  :)

On way to typically omit difficulty levels is to have adaptive gameplay difficulty, like in Gods. But this would require too much AI to fit on the CPC...

You´re right. It is slow and not very enjoyable, but the detailed graphic looks good for Mode1. The colours are well-chosen.
Title: Re: Best game???
Post by: MacDeath on 18:06, 15 May 10
Flying Shark is not THAT slow... the animation also is smooth and quite constant if I remember well.
But, well, only need a little speed boost.

The major issue is the colour of the bullets.
It sometimes mix so much with the background you can't see them that well.

perhaps if those could have flickering colours (alternate between 2 colours...)

Also perhaps the sprites are a bit less coloured than they could.
If the background's tiles are properly re-done form the speccy, the sprites are not (still in 2 colours).

And colours could have been a bit betterly choosen.

Exemple : 1st level :

yellow + orange + light green + black.

3 colours "containning" Yellow... no wonder you can't see the bullet.
Perhaps getting the light yellow in White may be better.
Or something like that.

But the 27 colours palette from old CPC is actually not that easy to work with.
Really unbalanced, it can be great for some sutff, and bad for some others.
Title: Re: Best game???
Post by: Leonie on 21:20, 15 May 10
Flying Shark:
The colours of the landscape are well-chosen. It looks good, not like a spectrum port.
But yes, the sprites, especially the bullets, could really use some extra colours.
But as we know, there are only 4 colours in Mode 1... :'(
The scrolling is without hurry but very smooth.
However, Ikari Warriors is faster and also smooth, isn´t it?

EDIT: The music of Flying Shark could be a lot better. The AY is more than a beeper!

I know it's a good palette for a 1984's computer...
27 colours is far more than what a Speccy or C64 can offer.

And as I said it's a bit unbalanced.

Lack of Greys (only one...) and proper "Browns" (Dark red is not a real brown, nor is the Orange...) actually.

This means you can't get reallistic stuff (wood or stone) or Grim and Gritty ambiances...

I always say that if the CPC did have the 32 colours it could actually handle, with let's say +2 greys (light and dark), + 3 Browns (light, medium and dark) it could have change a lot of thing.
But the Colours were generated strangely with a 3 level for each RGB... 3 levels, not even bits...
I don't know if +5 custom colours could have been added to those.

The C64 palette used only custom colours.
And perhaps such custom colours were not possible in a Gate Array, or could have cost too much to produce, or whatever....

But the colourfull chatoyance of the numerous blues, Purples, the sweet Yeelow-orange or Yellow-green gradiants, the nice Red gradient too...

Simply excellent for colourfull stuff, cartoon like style, Fantasy/Heroic fantasy, space galaxies and so on...

And this lack of some kind of colours is not that a big deal when your are in a 4 colours mode...

but many great games in Mode0 managed to make the CPC one of the best computer of its time in term of graphics (compared to C64 and Speccy mostly...)

Barbarian is simply as good as on 16 bit IMO while Speccy or C64 are inferior in graphics.

Spanish games were always awesome and proper intro pages on CPC could really kick serious asses.

(Gabrielle..dynamic games, some french games too...)

Games like "Purple Saturn Day" or "Captain Blood" are wonderful to look at as well as the countless french adventures with theirs absolut amazing graphics. (the French really knew how to draw arts on the Amstrad). Sadly my french is confined to "Moi je m'appelle Lolita ".  :'(

Really unbalanced, it can be great for some sutff, and bad for some others.

flying shark's colours were poorly chosen.  i would have liked to seen flying shark in mode 0.  as you mentioned the bullet sprite was hard to see and that was only one flaw of the conversion to cpc.

but i still think its rather slow.... what gets me puzzled is that afterburner was a lovely colourful fast and smooth with clear sprites and movement and no problem seeing the bullets many agree it was the best 8 bit conversion in comparison to the speccy and c64 and yet flying shark is the complete opposite to afterburner..... possible answer is that firebird released flying shark and ocean released afterburner on cpc.

a cpc with 32 colours would have made it very interesting i couldnt agree more. there was lack of greys and browns and at times lack of grim and grittyness graphically.

but why have 3 modes ? that always bugged me about the cpc it felt so limited in that area. would it have been possible to have better GFX modes than the 3 it had ?

mode 1 would have been better with atleast 10 colours and not 4.

mode 2 was really annoying only ever used for serious applications like wordprocessing etc

mode 0 lovely colour but usually meant GFX were blocky and movement slow

To me the main limitation comes from the way CRTC and Gate array communicate/work together.
The Video System on CPC can't overclock in order to get square pixels in 16 colour modes per exemple...
(Of course this would mean 2x time the amount of video ram).

Also, getting 5 colours is simply impossible until it were coded quite differently.

Yet : we have 1 bit code (Mode2), 2 bit code (Mode1) and 4 bit code (mode0...).
Perhaps some modes in 3 bits (8 colours) or 5 bits (32 colours...) could have been fun... if only a little overclock available in CRTC-GateArray relation.

Also As I told, I don't even know if this could have been possible to put those 5 extra colours in the palette because I don't really know the possibilities of a gate Array (it's some kind of customisable chip...).

CRTC+Gate array is an unusual Video solution actually.

And we have to remember that EGA graphic cards on PC were released in 1984-1985 only...
If only Amstrad did something like a EGA on CPC instead of a CGA...

What made the graphical modes lacking flexibility IMO was the fact we had no real Video Ram as on MSX per exemple because CPC wasn't designed as a 128K computer...

Or an optionnal "character Attribute" system could have been well mixed with the CPC video...to get decent multimode or multi palette screens...
(like, each character with a choice between 2 or even mode ink settings...)

the Palette system allows 16 colours as ink (because of mode0) + 1 border...
So 12 colours ink slots are unused in Mode1 and 14 unused in Mode2...

3 modes?

The video hardware takes each byte and shifts it by 1 bit per clock.
Then based on mode it masks out the bits, and finally this makes a pen index.
The pen index is then used to get the colour that has been programmed.

With this method it only makes sense to have 1,2, 4 or 8 bits per pixel.
Shame we never got 8 bits per pixel :(

Of course because the clock is always the same, and to ensure all modes take the same area, they update the shift ever x clocks depending on mode too.
If you had different video clock you would get different sized pixels.

Overclocking is possible, but the gate-array generates timing for the z80. why? because gate-array needs access to ram when it needs it. If gate-array didn't have priority then the picture would not be stable. So they decided to always make the gate-array have priority at all times and for all ram, so all ram has the same timings.

It would be possible to have 3 bits per pixel or 5 bit per pixel, but you would have to decode 2 bytes at a time, or loose some bits in the byte. And then you need to decide how wide each pixel will be. Too small, and you loose hsync/vsync timing too.

An attribute mode would have been interesting.

I think what you are talking about is the video hardware of the enterprise computer.
It has all that you describe.

The colours: They are probably generated by taking the bit patterns in the number and deciding the r,g,b from these.
some of the possibilities are duplicates, and in this case it would have been nice to add in some needed colours (greys, browns and some other useful colours), but of course keeping all other colours in there too ;)

How to get 256colours out of a 27 palette ???
But hey, a mode0 in 256colours on PLUS would kickass.
Also this could have been possible on Atari ST (with its palette of 512...and its CPC like video modes but in 32K instead of 16K...They really passed beside this.

Quote

Yes, this one was actually a crossbreed between the CPC and the Speccy...

But we'll have to remember CPC464 was Amstrad's first try in computers...This could have been even worse.
just too bad they didn't used more of their IBM PC compatible experience on the PLUS range...

I am playing Mercenary - Escape from Targ again. I can tell you its so much fun, i love that game so much. I started to paint maps with my pen and paper again and i will try the "2nd City" if i solved the 1st part.

Its a good game and worth to play. The Vector graphics is well done and its so much faster then the 64er Version. BTW: Did you knew that you can shoot on a Atari Logo in some versions and at the atari system on a commodore logo etc.?

when i am done with mercenary i wanted to try "Dun Daragh" again. The animation and the flying hair of that dude is so cool. "IRIDI?"

Ahhh yes I remember playing this and the other related releases like Tir Nag Nog and Marsport.  I really liked Marsport and have fond memories of taking it to my uncles house to show him, while the new single by a~ha 'Take On Me' was playing from a cassette.  Marsport had so much eerie atmosphere I thought and a little more depth in gameplay.  The printed poster maps that came with those Gargoyle games were lovely too.  Happy days...

While I cannot contribute towards the poll had I the opportunity I would have picked Light Force only cause it's a nicely presented for one of the really early CPC games though looks years apart from your blinkin' Plane in Harrier Attack!  ;D

There's some other nice games in that list with the likes of Mr. Heli, X-OUT, Sonic Boom (is okay), Flying Shark is a better example of it & Silkworm. How on earth does a game like X-OUT only get 1 vote? And R-TYPE gets 5!  ???   I've played P47 too, though I didn't find it all that challenging - Nice Graffixs though!  ;D  Anyone who wants a classic shooter which is missing from the list should have thrown in Space Harrier!  ;D

I recently bought one of those joysticks you hook up to a TV. It's from Namco and contains Pacman, Digdug, Bosconian, Galaxian and Rally-X.

So for the first time ever I've been playing some Bosconian and think it's very addictive. Great game!

But Bosconian 87 for the CPC is no where near the same experience.

Is there any other Bosconian clone for the CPC besides Bosconian 87?

I've recently acquired one of those also, from a car boot for £2.50. Those games are great classics, but I think you're being a touch hard on the CPC version.

For your information, I didn't get myself a standard version of girlfriend. (I've seen what those does to a man).
Instead I got the complete-geeky girlfriend. You got the joystick yourself you say? So go ahead and beat her record on Bosconian: She reached level 12 and got 221.930 points. Come back when you've reached her level of geekiness.  ;)

Another example that, I think, should make her opinions both valid and respected among all geeks:

Me: "I've got a great idea! Let's get an arcade machine!"
Her: "....where would we put it?"
Me pointing to the corner of the hall: "It can stand right there in the corner."
Her: ".....nah, I'd rather have it in the living room"

P.S.: If Bosconian 87 was that great, how come it didn't score any points in this poll. You're down-voted ukmarkh.  :)

Probably not really fair doing a direct comparison with the arcade version of Bosconian, really, since I doubt it was intended to be a direct port, otherwise they wouldn't have added "'87" to the title.  They added features like bombs and making the rear shot an upgrade you have to find (whose bright idea was that, anyway?), and those things you precision-park your ship into.  Love the soundtrack on the CPC, though. :)  Play the X68000 version if you want the original gameplay (and with a kick-ass soundtrack, also ;))
Title: Re: Best game???
Post by: ukmarkh on 13:24, 27 August 10
I'm not suggesting the CPC version was perfect by any means... but back in the day I enjoyed it. It was possible to progress and beat the game, the small playing window didn't help things, but it was just one of those things you had to look past on the CPC as most of the games used only a small part of the screen.

In terms of playability, it was pretty much the same game, and I heard that Namco gave Mastertronic the licence to make the game. I think too many people can't see past the graphics on the CPC, this is why R-Type comes in for so much stick. It's actually a great CPC game.

I must mention this game that I found on the CPC Power(now defunct), which i was really impressed with as it looks like it is just a type-in jobbie , but performs really well in the vain of Galaxians... It is called 'Alien Attack' and is well worth seeking out!I do not know where you would look for it now though?

Yes it is a type-ins

You can always try NVG which is a very good place to look for amstrad games.

I was just playing 'ChaseHQ'. There's lots of cars in the game, which got me wondering. Imagine if I could select the Ferrari instead of the Porsche, or the Lambo? Race the track in reverse, or change the colour of the car or play the robbers. Anyway, got me thinking, would a game like Gran Turismo be possible on the CPC?

A very interesting point... Well, Chase HQ was not a pure racer where such a variety is more valued, and it had plenty of thrills anyway; but still, probably easy to do and it would have added to the marketing value of the title.

That's a old classic game. I haven't seen of them for a long time. It's nice to get back to early '90. Well done
