even pretty average or bad games can look amazingly colourfull, like Tapper, Rolling Thunder, 1943, Kung Fu Master ...

QuoteRainbow island, Rodland...
those cartoonish manga games are really what CPC can do well...
no need to go Greyish... and rounbd designs (cartoonish) so mode0 can perform well.
No wonder CPC can perform just above C64 and Speccy, despite being slightly sluggier.
Yet I think good old MSX2 can be greater of course (but MSX2 and latter are quite 16bit graphix IMO)

The only condition was to have good CPC graphical ports and no shitty mode1 speccy ports...
Nor even straight C64 ports...
You can do so much better with more than 4 colours per sprite or 4x8 wide pixels attributes.

"Sid Meyer's Pirates!" on CPC could really have been on 16bit level if a real graphician handed this port instead of those C64 rippoffs...

Quote1943
I even think the CPC version looks even better than ST/Amiga ports...

AMSDOS

Off the top of my head in no particular order:

Auf Wiedersehen Monty
Rainbow Islands
Edd The Duck
Flimbo's Quest
Titus The Fox
Turbo The Tortise
Scooby & Scrappy Doo.
Wizard Willy
The Hit Squad
Punch & Judy
The Sacred Armour of Antiried

Unsure if when the screen is reduced to Spectrum Resolution if the Pixels change from a rectangular shape (as normal Mode 0 games do) into a Square. Normal Mode 1 offers a square pixel as opposed to Normal Mode 0 as well.

That's why I never cared much for Barbarian's graphics on CPC.  Sure it still looks alright but it's still a C64 port whereas those large sprites could have had so much more shading and detail if redone specifically for the CPC.  Same goes for other obvious C64 ports where the large sprites have only 3 colors.

Turrican II, I still far prefer on CPC rather than C64 and looks like the CPC version actually had some effort put into it rather than a cheap port. Still not sure why Turrican himself is green when blue would have been more appropiate though.

Also I have a lot of fondness for the colorful graphics of the first Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles Game.  Nice chunky sprites and tiles and even has parallax scrolling.
Favorite CPC games: Count Duckula 3, Oh Mummy Returns, RoboCop Resurrection, Tankbusters Afterlife

Concerning Barbarian's sprites, it is fun to notice that even the PC ("Death sword" CGA Dos version ) have those wide pixel sprites.
And ST/Amiga versions don't even have that much coloured sprites.

But on the background matter, the CPC version has especially designed ones, with some differences with C64 version, and to be fair they are the most impressive on CPC.

I don't know if the engine could support betterly designed sprites.
They may be encoded in 2bpp, I got to check this on WinApe.

Ok I cheked and yes those warrior sprites are coded in 2bpp (="mode1").
find graphics option has to be put in Linear mode.

I did a spritesheet rippoff but can't post it.

Best mode 0 graphics ?
What about Targhan from Silmarils ?

steve

All we've got here is a list of names, how about a screenshot and/or video link as evidence?

Gryzor

Not exactly what you've asked for, but do try CPCGamesCD, the included CPCLoader software has screenshots for all of them and it's the easiest way to check things out fast...

As I told, Silmarils (vive la France) made only few productions on CPC but graphics are top notch on all of them...

Targhan manage to have a strong atmosfear... and the colours are brilliantly well used...

One of the rare occurance where the only 1 grey mixed with dark cyan actually looks like a proper grey gradiant...

Hell even the EGA PC version was awesome with realsounds and good use of limited fullCGA palette.

Windsurf Wilklly's graphics are saucy as hell too.

Another not well know french game : les Dieux de la Mer (Patrice Martin Championship Waterskiing/Championship Water-Ski Challenge)

Also a great game I played a lot... and quite good for summertime retro sessions... ;)

Mode 0 games is beautiful colours, but because the conversion games to mode 0 in amstrad lost the music?.

For example:

spectrum version:

Run The Gauntlet (Sports Game Based On 80's TV Series) - The Quiet Video Game Nerd

horrible graphics,but beautiful music.

Amstrad colours:

Beautiful graphics, but not music!.

Run the Gauntlet on an Amstrad CPC 6128.flv

kyjena

The amstrad conversion doesn't lost the music. You can make a try here: http://www.cpc-power.com/index.php?page=detail&onglet=jeuenligne&num=1853
The music is on the title's screen and sounds are ingame.
And the scrolling speed is best when you play online than the video itself.
This game is fun to play and the graphics are very good an colorfull in my opinion.

The ingame scrolling.
He meant when you play the game in an emulator / with your real CPC instead of watching it on YT.

The map actually, I believe, was written specifically for the CPC version - but I also believe the Speccy has the same layout.

Anyway - the map is VERY confusing, and I too thought it was incorrect. But once you get your head round his schema, it is actually correct ... just a bit of a mess and by god, if you hadn't made a map you would have gotten lost in the sewers which in game make no logical sense how they connect with each other. How that person made that map deserves a medal as I would not have had the patience for it, which will be reflected in the score I give. There are 2 areas you have to get to and the only way is via the sewers you see.

The other game you mention very vaguely rings a bell, but I can't remember - maybe someone else here will know it

write for the cpc? Imposible.

For example.

Yo begin in the sector marked with the "file" in the map.

o.k If you go to the door of forest.(to the left) yo can walk across 4(door forest incluyed, begin not incluyed) localizations(map). But in the game you lost one localitation!.(this is not problem of confussing map).

In the file localitation map,go up to the roof,an try go to station.i'ts imposible not exists!.

In the jail up,appears one level with upstaris to the roof.ok.If yo go to the roof and go to the other side to the roof down to street and go one screen to the let you found the screw!.In a localitation when you can go to norh and right. When in the map the screw is in localtation without north exit and with roof door!.
