Retro Gamer went to the guys house, did a full feature on the game and reviewed it, gave it something like 72%... they took several screenshots.

Hi

Sounds very interesting.

After visting the Retro Gamer site i cannot find any links to a Chase HQ II review.

Is this an article to be published or has it already been done?

A link would be very nice!!

/Ygdrazil

PS. This cartridge should be dumped!

You'll have to buy the back issue mag from ebay or something... unless someone would be kind enough to scan the article for you?

I think Xyphoes site gx4000.co.uk has most information on the game. Some pictures and scans of articles too:

I'm afraid I'm still firmly wearing my tin hat when it comes to ChaseHQ2 on the GX4000... it's a bit like the moon landing I spose, some beleive, others don't. Incidently, I do think we landed on the moon.

The guys behind the RG CD decided to have the PDF mags with really low quality - I think it's as low as 75dpi.

Hi,
I've already explained it on CPCZONE : there a way to catch a game from a CPC+/GX4000 cartridge without any damage by using the following hardware created by RAM7 (also creator of the RAMCARD) on a CPC 6128 PLUS.

http://cpcrulez.fr/hardware_extention_cartouches.htm (http://http://cpcrulez.fr/hardware_extention_cartouches.htm)
http://amstradcpc.info/ (http://amstradcpc.info/)
photos of this hardware working in the section Photos : Meeting CPC ROOM http://amstradcpc.vivasitei.com/cpcroom/images/DSCF3883.JPG (http://amstradcpc.vivasitei.com/cpcroom/images/DSCF3883.JPG)

Only 3 pieces of this hardware have been built.
The hardware has a 512 Kb memory and can contain 4 games that the player can select with the red switches.
If a game is present in the CPC's cartridge port, the hardware enables to boot in Basic and to load a program from disc to make the copy (.CPR or .BIN from and to disc) and to verify if the files on disc are similar with the cartridge. Of course, it requires to have a 6128 PLUS, not a GX 4000 !  :D
On CPCZONE, I've proposed several times to send my hardware to the CHASE HQ 2's owner but without any anwser !!!  ???
So till now, the only sure thing is that the hardware by RAM7 exists...  ;D

Hi,

It's not a problem for me to send the hardware to you (as I could also have sent it to the game's owner). You just have to be sure to have a perfect drive (3.5" will be probably better!) to do the catching... ;)

****eliot ---- ukmarkh****

It seems to have a final issue with your help !!!
It was too long time that we talk about Chase HQ 2
So please please please please please please......
it seems too to be easy :

1/ eliot send RAM7 hardware
2/ ukmarkh make the backup
and 3/ all the CPC comunity thank eliot ukmarkh and the owner of CHQ2 to have many years after the chance to play for the first time this (unereleased ?) game.

It seems so so so so easy when I read your post, that I cant imagine it cant be done.

I want to thank you in advance for your effort.

That's cool... I have a working 3.5" drive connected both to my 128 Plus and external. I'll now contact the relevant people to arrange getting the game transferred.

Just to let you guys know, I've been in touch with Darren from RetoGamer, he pointed me in the direction of Mart, the guy that did the interview and review for ChaseHq 2 and now I'm currently waiting for feedback from James, the owner of the elusive cart. Wish me luck.

Eliot, if we could swap details then that'd be good... things are already looking promising.

I spoke with the guy that did the review for Retro Gamer... Martyn, It's real alright! Martyn has the mobile number for James, so just awaiting further instructions. I've also sent Martyn another email recently just to check up on things.

I left it a while as this situation is delicate, and I didn't want him to become sick and tired of people calling him. Rest assured, if the cart does exist - it'll be with us shortly.

from wikipedia
=============

Sequels
Chase H.Q. has two arcade based sequels - the widely released Special Criminal Investigation from 1989 and the extremely rare Super Chase: Criminal Termination from 1992.

Special Criminal Investigation expands on the original with the addition of guns - the passenger can rise out of the T-top of his Nissan 300ZX Z32 and shoot at oncoming targets. To take advantage of this, enemies are placed through the level and will attempt to shoot at or ram the player as they attempt to pursue the main criminal. Deviating from the relatively realistic tracks on offer in the original, the sequel features pursuits through waterfalls and unfinished sections of elevated highway. Despite this the game was generally poorly received by critics.

Super Chase: Criminal Termination was the third arcade release in the Chase H.Q. series, being released in 1992. Unlike in prior games, the protagonist's vehicle was commanded from a first-person view.

The 1997 PlayStation game Ray Tracers, developed and released by Taito, has been described as "more or less a follow up" to the game,[1] with "only a few differences" such as a different speed-boost system and a greater variety of targets.[2]

In February 2006, Chase H.Q. : Nancy Yori Kinkyuu Renraku (English: Chase H.Q. - An Urgent Call From Nancy) was presented at the Arcade Operator's Union trade show in Tokyo[3]. The game was released as Chase H.Q. 2 later in the year.

Of course this is a sensitive matter and we should tread carefully with them. It looks like we scared James Bridges off all those years ago sadly, maybe it's him back again - or the guy in Denmark that won the eBay auction nearly 2 years ago now.... who knows. As soon as I know anything I can share, I'll let you guys all know.

Well we already knew it wasn't a great game (and let's face it, if it were there would have been a lot more copies made and sold), but it would be nice to see it imaged for preservations sake if nothing else. I don't believe it will have any real impact on the value of the cartridge itself, since that will remain a genuinely rare item in any case.
Title: Re: CHASE HQ 2 cart
Post by: Gryzor on 20:25, 14 February 12
Agree, agree and agree.
1.It looks like it's quite worse than CHQ, no wonder then it was relegated to history.
2.Indeed, no matter how crappy it is, it'd be nice to have it
3.Dumping it would not have the slightest effect on the price of the cartridge. It is, after all (from what it seems) a crappy title, so the value of the cartridge lies in the hardware itself.

IMO the video is bad, the focus always walks in circles between the screen and the key of the keyboard. But I don't see a bad game necessarily. Consider it's a CPC,  not a PS IV or XboX720, ok?

Title: Re: CHASE HQ 2 cart
Post by: Xyphoe on 18:02, 15 February 12
I'm afraid it uses nothing of Burnin' Rubber or any of the usual Ocean programming talent.

This was farmed out to Ian Morrison and ICE - purveyor of dire racing games.

Yes its the same guys who did Cisco Heat, I talk about CHQ2 a lot at the start of the video too -

[AMSTRAD CPC] Cisco Heat - Review & Longplay (Part 1 of 2) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HX8sUmjNgVI#)

Just compare the poor scaling and music to the CHQ2 video.......!
ICE also did Hydra and Turbo Outrun (the latter of which was passible - although they had nothing to do with the original Outrun that was Probe)

Retro Gamer magazine who have seen the game in action (James Bridges' copy) said it played identical to the Speccy version and from this new video looks the case apart from recoloured graphics.
Inept Reviews: Chase HQ 2 Special Criminal Investigation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wJ16Yjf46U#)

I liked Cisco Heat until I played the CPC version... the lack of speed killed yet another good game from the arcades.

I don't think it was lazy programming, just a massive misunderstanding as to how to get the best outta the CPC.

I can understand, the owner of the cart will not publish it for free (because he payed much for it)

Who would donate for him?
(I'd donate 10€)
Perhaps we can rise this and he accepts to publish the game as CPR?

Pretty much, yeah. If it were a fantastic game I'd be disappointed. My only real worry is that it may eventually disappear into the ether and be lost forever which would be a shame from a purely historic point of view. Otherwise we'll just have to wait until another copy surfaces somewhere and is in a more preservation friendly hands.

so peoples could at least test it.

Well, maybe once the CPC Ethernet project is complete, maybe we could send him a free version that he could test out, it calls home when the CHQ2 cart is inserted and uploads an image to TFM/FS!

Yes! Good idea! For the Ethernet card he needs a ROM card (so a MegaFlash) an I will just patch the upcoming ROManager 1.44 in a way that patches the CPC-OS and the Amsdos when he is using the "Write Flash option". This way he will not recognice that we implement a Trojan into his CPC. He may miss the FILL command in BASIC, what probably he will never use it. And the FILL command need a lot of space in the ROM, that's enought space to install a small Spy-OS ;-)

On the other hand TotO is right too. Why not do a clean remake (using the more quick CHQ I engine in case you like) or even start From Scratch ((c) Vanity) with a very new game. Chase HQ III ;-) Then we send him a copy and he starts weeping ;-)

Or just take the code and music from the Speccy version, slap the C64 graphics on it and have a version that's probably 90% identical to the official release.

No car-race engine were done "from scratch" by the modern homebrew development scene yet... if i remember well...

As a lot of style of game actually...
Wargames ? RPGs ?

It would be interesting to see a modern approach on the mater...

something like... using the 128K RAM or 512K Cartridge or course, and the proper PLUS utilized.

Having 128K RAMand/or 512K ROM would enable more precalculated sprites content, hence perhaps a smoother experience.

Got to remember that Burnin' Rubber actually is a very small ROM game... as it could share the 128K with the Basic...

Would anyone set a list of the best Car-race games on CPC/PLUS ?
those in pseudo "fake 3D" third person...

==Burnin'rubber and Wec le Mans are quite good.
==Buggy boy was a bit on the sluggish side.
==Fire and forget series was almost decent.

==Chase HQ (#1) was good.

==Powerdrift was quite impressive, not sure if fast enough.

==Stunt car racer seems good too (and in almost real 3D)

==Lotus turbo esprit Challence was sadly a little bit slow, a little to much speccyported and the screen was so small if hurt... but somewhat managed to be decent and the multiplayer split screen is a sweet feature too.

What Else ?
I was never quite fond of those kind of game, unless you had some Arcade "kill and destroy" aspect (fire at enemies...)

Fire and forget2 and Space Harrier are then the kind I would prefer...

I did enjoy the Crazy Cars series, especially the second which came with a map (from memory).

Funny thing is that Crazy Car2 was percieved as a good game on CPC but was judged crap on GX4000...
;D

Same with fire and forget2 and op.Thunderbolt...

And those games actually had upgraded graphics.

Yes, GFX were a bit updated, but it didn't make it much better.

The point is (/was probably as their POV) that the GX4000 offers much more as the CPC:

- Hardware-Sprites
- Enhanced Scrolling
- Mixed Modes (ab)using Sprites
- hardware-split screen
- and and and

So, agreed, you can expect more from a GX4000 than from a CPC464 (which was the machine people usually did games for).

Yes me too... I really liked the 6128 version of Crazy Cars 2. You had to be careful, and could really open her up on the highways. I completed it as well, i think it gave me a code for each section completed.

If you play Fire and Forget 2 on the Sega Master System, it shows up how bad the GX4000 version was. Operation Thunderbolt was a joke in that you can't see the flippin crossair... can anyone modify this as it'd be a good game if people could see where they were bloody aiming.

Looked it up a youtube. Well thanks! So, finally I found an interesting use for my parallax scrolling routines (one day in future I hope to have time for such projects)  ;)
