How to tell which games will run from an SD card instead of disk?

I've downloaded several dsk image files to try and run via the SD card on Duke's M4 board. I seem to get about a 1:4 hit/miss ratio of games that will actually run off the SD card. It seems a lot will try to run off a physical disk only and the empty drive just spins up.

Is there any way to work out which copies will run from SD before downloading them? Like a list of working games somewhere for instance? ;)

Some games I found that will run from the SD card include:

Donkey Kong
Addams Family
Croco Magneto
Ghouls'n'Ghosts
Altered Beast
Paper Boy Special Edition
Impossible Mission
Map Rally

CPC6128 modded with ABBA switch. External 5.25" floppy drive with side switch and Multiface 2. Now also sporting a joystick splitter and M4 WiFi board.

Poliander

I've those running from my X-Mass, there should be a good chance that they run on the M4, too.

Who Dares Wins
1942
1943
Cyrus Chess
Kong Strikes Back
Fruity Frank
Nebulus
Ikari Warriors
Bomb Jack
Cauldron
Boulder Dash
Schneider CPC 664 • X-MEM • Vortex F1-X Drive • CTM 644 • DMP 2160
Schneider CPC 6128 • Z-MEM • M4 Board • MultiPlay + Amiga Mouse • OSSC

ASiC

Games that don't use any custom trackloaders or DDA, should work fine.

It can be helpful to use cracked versions of games. For example from CPC-Power. Go for the "Trainer" versions. Because they usually don't have a copy protection and a decent loader. Good luck!  :)

Pretty much this. Cracks all the way and I just don't choose the cheats. A few may fail due to the way they were cracked but newer cracks take care of these issues.
Currently playing on: 2xCPC464, 1xCPC6128, 1x464Plus, 1x6128Plus, 2xGX4000. M4 board, ZMem 1MB and still forever playing Bruce Lee.
No cheats, snapshots or emulation. I play my games as they're intended to be played. What about you?

Starting the games under ACME Dos is the best way

I start all my games under ACME from a CF Card without any problems.

The games were startet under drive D: and I never get the ask for:

From what I understand and tried myself, the NVG games appear to be mostly working on the M4 (obviously I have not tried every one).

Here is the source...

ftp://ftp.nvg.ntnu.no/pub/cpc/games/

and here is a nice collection in the one .zip file...

http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/amstrad-cpc-hardware/amstrad-cpc-wifi/msg130997/#msg130997

I have this collection extracted to my M4 SD card.

Cracked games don't always work. Every one I've tried so far which uses an XOR loader spins up the disk drive.

Had Spitting Image fail yesterday on all the cracks I could find (old and new) and the original as well. Ended up using the HxC. Was hard work on that as well with the first crack I loaded being bugged so the CPU could kill you with one punch.

I'd also love to find some way to run disks that launch with |cpm from SD card or require disk swapping mid game.. but I fear that is likely impossible.
I'd particularly like to get US Gold's Gauntlet running as I am not sure how much longer my 30 year old original disk copy will last if it starts getting played frequently again (I have a new son who has inherited my CPC :P )

You can change directory/disc from the M4 web interface at any time (use the "CD ON CPC" button) so that shouldn't be a big problem. You might need to update your M4 firmware if you haven't done it recently.

blackdalek

The "cd on CPC" feature is good, however it will only work if the game doesn't decide to look for the 2nd disk on the physical drive.

Almost instantly after I posted my previous reply, I found a working (non |cpm) version of US Gold Gauntlet on CPC Power site. So that one is solved now :D

CNGsoft compactage loaded from M4 board perfectly.
