Hello guys...

This discussion about Rick Dangerous (which prompted me to replay the bitch...) reminded me of something: this game has one of the most memorable openings I've seen in games! I'm referring, of course, to the boulder that starts chasing you right after you move your toe to the right...

I remember being very impressed as a young lad and running frantically trying to outdo it...

So, I wanted to ask - what other memorable openings you remember? It needn't be on the CPC, just retro :)

Ritchardo

If we're talking any game ever then I'm probably going to plump for 'Final Fantasy VII' - the cinematic pan as you take in what seems to be a fully living and breathing city is simply breathtaking (and is later blown out of the water when you leave the city for the first time and realise that this is just a small part of a massive world...)  Is PSOne retro?  It's 15 years old - surely that's good enough!

If not, I'll plump for either Beneath a Steel Sky or Broken Sword on the PC for great animated intros that set the scene for both games very well indeed.

On the CPC?  Fantasy World Dizzy - possibly the best in the series opens with a series of fairly simple puzzles that set the tone for the rest of the game and is virtually a tutorial of what to expect for newcomers to the series - very cleverly done in such a way to avoid being an irritation to more seasoned Dizzy gamers!

Gryzor

I don't know about BaSS - for some reason I really never 'fell' for that opening. Broken Sword was really nicely done, but it wasn't so memory-engraving.

But it made me think of other adventures - Look, for one, and Monkey Island 3 (PC) too.

As a meta-retro opening scene, the recent remiganining of Monkey Island (not the 3D, the one with updated gfx) made my hair stand on their edges, especially when it switched from the old graphics to the new ones, showing the island.

On the other hand, I was talking about openings, not intros :)

MacDeath

Final Fantasy VII, Monkey Island...the best of the CPC games there...lol...

Depends what you mean by "opening"...
If it is an intro or scinematic, halas the amstrad was poor with it.
As you know, Too many Speccy ports, and too few fun features...
Most of the time, the Cracktro was the best offered...

But in Rick Dangerous, it is more an entrance in the game the an opening.

But yeah, Rick was a complete bastard, Levles 3 and 4 start directly with a dog running at you or bullet coming at you.

Gryzor

Well, yes, I did say it's not only about the CPC!

Also, it doesn't mean we're talking about intros/cracktros, but the impression the game made on you when you first ran it, the very first scene...

Well, I don't know how you want to call it... doesn't matter finally. But do you guys out there remember he begnning of "Trantor the last stormtrooper".

First the loading pic with the digi-sample, then the movie-like landing scene and finally the small storm trooper jumped off the big space ship to enter the danger alone. THAT all was / is quite impressive too me! Still a WoW!!!

One that I find memorable for sure was Aliens (U.S. Version). Identifying the equipment? Who came up with that? It doesn't exactly slap you round the face with a fish about how good the game is gonna be. :-D (Although I suppose the "movie-like" stills with captions were quite cool)

Parasite Eve 2 Intro was decent on the PSX.

Trantor had a GREAT intro. I remember buying the tape (original, yay!), going back home where I was alone. Left it loading, went to take a leak and heard the voice "TRANTOR: THE LAST STORMTROOPER". I almost pissed myself. Fantastic, especially for the CPC...

Cholo

Pretty much all those nice long a detailed jp adventures for ps1 all have some nice long partially playable intro. FF series is nice, but ive always had a weak spot for the Breath of fire 3 opening (even tho some of it is automated, you still need to input commands, like you need to wriggle joystick to get the cage to fall off):

Hacker has a fairly unusual game opening (perhaps not a intro), with the logon screen and the identify the different parts bid.

Moonwalker has those nicely animated feet ;D

Alone in the dark (pc 1992) scared the **** out of me first time it loaded. Took 2 steps into the first room in the attic and a black creature jumped thru a window with a loud broken glass noise. I just sat there all frozen up going "eeeep".

I loved opening of Duke Nukem 3D with its terrible humour  ;D
Blood opening was fun too when you go out from your coffin.
Half Life / Opposing Force opening was very well made too , after them you are totaly in the story.
"NOP" is the perfect program : short , fast and (known) bug free

Ah! For some reason, Duke reminded me of Mafia; the intro itself was great - cinematic titles, fantastic music, a perfect atmosphere - but when it started it put you right in the action...

@Cholo: really? I always got sooooooooo bored with these long jap intros...

Well, i got a soft spot for all those ps1 & ps2 "oldstyle" jap menu driven turnbased games (i probably have them all ;D )

Xifos

Memorable game opening, and not only on cpc ?

Another World (ST,1992) : i had never seen that before

Valkyrie Profile and Star Ocean 2 (PSX,2001) : for the music of Sakuraba, and the beautiful scenes

Crazy Cars 2 (CPC,1989) : because it was the first time i saw overscan and heard digit music on CPC  :)

Day of the tentacle (PC,1994) : i liked monkey island, but this one was great : "did you say Bernard ?"

Heheh... I had an ST too (1040STFM) and adored the game - I bought it a couple of years ago on the special PC CD version...

Indeed, not only was the intro great (so cinematic! With a plot!), but also the first scene (reminiscent of Rick Dangerous actually) had my heart pumping...

khisanth

Cant go wrong with the Trantor opening really on the CPC.  Otherwise its hard to think of any kind of opening on any Amstrad game!

Bioshock has a pretty cool opening I have to say.

Medal of Honour Allied Assault's opening is awesome, just like the Saving private ryan opening.

Gryzor

As I said, opening needn't be an intro, but also the beginning of the game.

In that respect, MoHAA was just plain fantastic - a whole experience!

Oh, and Bioshock - fantastic game, but ok, the intro and opening wasn't that memorable...

khisanth

well it was a nice way to get you into the game without just dumping you in the middle of a gameworld. Flying along, problems and the plane crashes. swimming in the sea with flaming wreckage all around you, swimming to this mysterious tower and then descending into Rapture. Its very atmospheric and nicely done I thought.

The new Super Mario Bros Wii game has such a silly opening, they just dispensed with any story and just had Bowser jump out of a birthday cake and kidnaps Princess Peach and Mario and Luigi run after them! thats it!! but it kinda suits it.

For nice game starts anyone played Flower on the PS3? beautiful experience indeed

I only just completed Bioshock on Survivor mode, excellent game that. I thought starting off in the water with a crashed plane was a bit different, and memorable, but, I only just played it so I should remember it :)

ukmarkh

There's Killer cobra on the CPC that has a wicked helicopter intro... and the Drakes Fortune 1 and 2 on the PS3 is memorable.

khisanth

Tomb Raider usually has quite nice openings.

ukmarkh

The Codemasters game 'Drift' has probably the best opening and in game menu system I've ever seen. I also remember the Magnetic Fields logo and intro from a few old Amiga games, they were iconic.

TFM

One of the best game openings is also contained in Black Land from the Bollawares...
They also did it great in Fres Fighter II Turbo...

Stryker in the Crypts from codemasters had a wizard dancing at the intro... and Final Fight was quite a good intro.

Cholo

Nexus has a really nice opening that is actually quite interactive. First you speed off on the jetski-boat-thingy untill you reach the shore and jump off. Then all the interactive-ness begins as that green fella run towards you.
If time i saw that fella run at me i paniced and beat him up  ;D But if you let him come close he can guide you around and show you where the main computer is and more (all depending on the choices you make). Kinda advanced for just a 8 bit game really.
