QuoteToki - CPC development game project-
This game should be 100% finished and come out for the 30th years arcade game birthday.
This Toki CPC version should be supported on CPC+ and GX4000's platform.
To be continued...
Cyrille Gouret:
Authors still "mysterious " as only know it's a French group of 3 or 4 people named GGP. Who discovered the Amstrad CPC in 80's. And now want to restart to program as a challenge.
About GX4000 and CPC+ platform , it is due to the modes and colors palette possibilities.
I guess more info will come soon
:o
If it isn't a fake we shall have another hit on our beloved machines :)
It's not a fake ! I confirm i know the graphist !
The fake Indiana Jones is Eric Cubizolle aka TITAN
This is one of my favs, used to finish it on the Amiga and arcades.
I was in deep pain that it wasn't released for my beloved Z80.
One of my favs too... it would be a dream come true :o .

If the Ocean version had come out that would have been Plus/GX4000 only.
in spring 91 AA published 2 cpc+/gx4000 screenshots. the speccy one weren't released too.
Absolutely great news! Great great great!
Can someone provide a scan of the AA's screenshots?
Loved the game as a kid although I found it very hard after a while. I'm sure it's a very difficult conversion, so I can only hold my breath :)

Yes, but we all know that it was somekind of agreement with amstrad to do only cpc+ games (pang, navyseals, toki...)
and because of this bad move, us (users of cpc classic), lost some interesting games, 99% amstrad users can't buy this games (only 1% cpc+, maybe they lost 99,50% of sales with this thing, not a smart move eh?)
I know that this i'm going to say are hard words... just wish the amstrad cpc+ didn't exist ever. with that total failiure, better have this games on cpc classic and then the same end... not more games from Ocean.
I have a plus machine and many "original".
I wish this works with the old machines but if the coder can do it only on a plus machine then it's OK.

As I recall the first level was complete but the memory usage was so high it would have required a larger cartridge to fit all of the game into. Ocean said no and ditched the game.

Eagerly waiting for playable version!!!
Looks good, uses a pseudo scroll will that annoy people?
I agree. Sprites look big and colourful but the scroll seems a bit jerky...
And they promised a plus version as welll which they didnt show in the video..
Still it seems to be a decent conversion.... We' ll see!!!
Guys, this is software. What did you expect from a CPC? You've been watching demos and CPC+ game too much.
This looks good and playable to me, and very colorful, so the game should be great.
If you want 50hz scrolling and sprites, wait for a CPC+ version.

Totally agree here, the game looks perfect and moves perfect, too much demos and game concepts can make forget some crappy games that we had in 80/90's!
"We are neither professional developers nor demo makers"
I think that was clear from the beginning, so we must appreciate with what we have (and looks gorgeous ;) )

Doesn't annoy me. If you want smooth scrolling go play the arcade game (via MAME) or one of the 16 bit ports. I'm not a big fan of the game but this version looks to capture it's gameplay well from what I can see in the video.

I've not played it but the scrolling looks fine to me, it reminded me a bit of green beret and I know peeps got funny about that. It would be good to see a plus version that brings the colours, sprites and scrolling but even if this doesn't materialise this version looks to be coming on good.
Oh, this seems to be a CPC conversion. On Cartridge the scrolling is smooth and sprites are bigger. Thank's a lot for sharing the video. :)

lack of smooth scrolling wasn't what annoyed me about Green Beret. Being a crap game was what annoyed me about it.
We have background gfx. Look at the c64 -cartridge- release. The game isn't finished and that's full of promise.
QuoteGuys, this is software. What did you expect from a CPC? You've been watching demos and CPC+ game too much.
Just to remind of some nice cpc titles...
When the developers showed pic of their "first version of 1992" the first closest game that came into my mind was Sly Spy Secret Agent. Which has great colorfull sprites and good scrolling on a big screen..
But dont get me wrong ...
The job done looks awesome esp. for a homebrew game!!!
Keep up the effort guys...
That looks very good.
Roll on the cpc+ version.

HI Xenomorph! 8 hope it is still going on :)
The last picture from this game it's about november 2018 , maybe ... team AmstradGGP , they can show us something more. ? :o
From the pics/vids I see, this project is very promising. Ok, for some months there is no update, but that's surely ok. Looks like the scrolling is software based, this way it could be less jerky, so I assume they work on that. From own experience I remember that the "to polish" time of making a game is underestimated. Sometimes on the way one looses the "fire" to continue coding. It's a gigantic project, the programmers deserve all the time they need to finish up. :)

mmm i don`t know really , i'm only copy text from FB , maybe @CyrilAmstrad (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/profile/?u=2949) can answer us about
I count 16 colors on screen.
Facebook modified picture, I will post the original here tomorrow.......just be patient.
The picture is using split raster & sprite hard.
Here is à .CPR made using the last tool from Roudoudou: Splitraster+
The attached picture:
- 457 colors - to be verified tomorrow 'cause of a potential bug (split rasters)
- 6 sprites hard
- Full screen
23 - 24 effective colors on screen :)
indeed , as Kris well said , it's a Split Raster technique of a fixed screen displaying .
Shortly and very basicaly explainations , you could switch ink each line with the 4096 possibles colors.
you need a special ""engine"" program in order to manage this kind of displaying and lines management.
JPEg shown is a screenshoot with weak compressions .... as always I am complaining a lot about screenshots and displaying shared and shown on LCD screens ....
But it is our better matter to show and share on Forum and Socials network...
BUT Real enjoying display will be always on CRT screen ;)
greetings ;)
Will the CPC+ be more colorful than the (excellent) ST release ?
A .cpr will be released too ?

ChaseHQ definitely needed a new loading screen on the CPC! I thought the game itself was pretty attractive even on the CPC. I don't know if replacing some graphics with Plus Sprites is doable (the car, or roadside features, etc), both to aid rendering speed and to add more colours in-game. Maybe a sky gradient can be added too.
Toki does look like a small game area, but if it's plain old CPC they're probably running into the scrolling performance issue.
The french translation should be improved too (Cyril & I had a discussion about it).

There's a nice interview, of course in french, but it can enable subtitle. This game is a firsty for Gros Gland Production (I can't really translate, sound like dick head production ;D )They never coded the CPC before this game. It was hard work yet to implement just the palette cycling with the waterfall :)
This is a crazy adventure and experiment for this team. OCP graphics made with the joystick...
Indeed it use the second button for jump. I like the beta yet, big sprites, ingame music and fx.

Yes it most certainly does look ridiculously good!
It's interesting - I had initially thought that everything moved in character cells, but there are some sprites that move in smaller increments.
I guess what they've (cleverly) done is to move everything the right amount to maintain each sprites correct speed, regardless of how smooth it does/doesn't look.
I think it's an effective approach.
Great progress on this project, keep up the good work !

I find the idea of sharing the progress of the project in the form of funny little videos rather nice, it's recreational for the developers, recreational for those who are waiting for the game, it keeps the little CPC world alive anyway much more than doing your little thing hidden in your corner and above all it should always be done in this "not serious" state of mind when it comes to development around an obscure machine that has been commercially dead for 30 years.. .
Obviously by dint of VinaigreIron tapping on their gfx it has faded and some have become embittered, it's ugly.

But hey, at least you remembered where the English forum is this time around ;)
Just an FYI... it's okay to have a differing opinion here in 2022. I know the forum is full of yes men, but some of us can think for ourselves.
Cheers!
Then and now? Same with you. ;)
Of course it's totally cool to have different opinions. Not only in 2022. Always. :)
Just hope you'll remember next time ;) :) :)
My idea to do something was meant serious, keeping myself busy with CPC projects does significantly shorten waiting time. Furthermore it really doesn't matter how long it takes to finish this great upcoming game. As long as they team will love their baby at release date.

Oh look! Whataboutary from TFM! No wonder you got your last account banned.
The rest you make a valid point on though. But I don't wait on the edge of my seat for an 8bit game now in 2022. A year to 18 months, fair enough. But when we're three to four years waiting, I'm sorry but the thrill is gone by then and as far as I'm concerned, it's vapourware until proven otherwise. That's just me, I'm a no expectations, no disappointments kinda guy. :)
We all know that the wrong guys got banned here.

LOOKS GREAT!
will there be a CPR version?
A CPR version or one that works with M4 would be sweet. But I used M4 to write a physical disk and this game is awesome.

Cpr versión , des , or dandanator yes its planned , i think , M4 i don't know.
Superb
In order of preference I'd vote for.....
1st: CPR
2nd: DES/Dandanator
3rd: 80 track DSK to save disc or disc image swapping on a 3.5inch drive or Gotek
4th: M4 compatible
Sorry if I'm critical, I really appreciate the work behind this conversion, but in my opinion, the really low framerate and the gameplay plagued in part by this low framerate, needed more care.
Instead, in my opinion, the graphics had higher priority, resulting in some cases confused and stressful for the eyes.
Only my simple opinion, anyway many thanks for another arcade CPC conversion.
@DanyPPC It is a tricky one, TBH. I'm sure the authors appreciate the feedback but after all the work behind this project, I suspect they made some design decisions that may not work for everybody.
If this was released back in the day it would have been a smashing hit, but with modern sensibilities, I see that it may be a bit hard for some players. I like the graphic style, a lot, but I agree the frame rate needs some time to get used to it.
Could it have been done differently? There's
a lot going on, and when you are doing a conversion you can't really design the game around the strengths and limitations of the system you're working on. So I wouldn't know how to do it, at least.
I would suggest that you give it some time. IMHO it may be one of those games that will grow on you after you give it a fair chance.
To the authors: well done, and thanks for a great game!
'really low framerate'? Is it? Seems quite good for a CPC port of a scrolling game. Certainly didn't bother me, even right after playing some 60fps games on my PS5 (which should render many CPC games to feel like a slide-show in comparison). Really solid conversion with changes made where necessary. It's got relatively chunky scrolling but it moves a lot faster than many other CPC games that also scrolled the same sizes. I'm having fun with it. :)
Congratulations to the whole GGP team for FINALLY releasing this amazing game !!
I can't wait to enjoy my Xmas vacations to try beating it.
Sure, I have some concerns here and there, but those appears to be only details to me.
The gameplay looks pretty well preserved, it feels and plays great, and in my opinion that's what really matters.
Bravo! Merci!
I appreciate the work that's gone into this and it looks great, but it feels a bit off to me. Toki was already a very hard game and most of the changes in the first level serve only to make it even harder - married with the slightly clunky controls, it makes it more frustrating than it should be, in my humble opinion.
A few simple changes would make this much more playable, I think:
- Increase jump height
- Increase bounce height when jumping on enemies
- Reduce hit box to allow ducking projectiles and generally make hit detection a bit more generous
- Reduce enemy frequency slightly in the first level
- Reduce game speed slightly so the frame rate doesn't impact the controls quite so much and to reduce the chance of newly appearing enemies immediately hitting you
I do think there are some more core decisions that don't serve the gameplay, but that's not really something that could be tweaked now. The large sprites look great, but the play area is really a bit too small for them - the Lynx port of Toki is amazing, I think it could've served as good inspiration for a CPC port.
All that said, this is still a great production and would've been a massive hit if it was released back in the day!
OK my turn...
First off, history can be a very complicated thing. I absolutely *hated* this game in the arcade when it was released. I just couldn't relate to it. Why the fuck would I want to play a monkey or a gorilla or whatever? I was 13 so yeah... But I had to explain this game to the girlfriend and basically described it as Donkey Kong Country before Donkey Kong Country was Donkey Kong Country.
As a result, I couldn't have cared less when it came to the home market a year later.
So I saw video upon video upon video as this game became released and I was still unsure about it.
(ready for this?)
BOY WAS I WRONG!
I'm really enjoying this. I downloaded it earlier and I've been playing it on my trusty CPC6128. The playing area is a little small, but it didn't bother me back in the day and it's not bothering me now. The jump mechanic seems a little off kilter but that could be just me with a joystick I haven't used in a while (Quickshot Maverick, only controller I have with 2 buttons and no, I'm not using those awful GX joypads).
I don't know about a framerate drop, but this does play very nicely on real hardware, if not a real monitor.
My only major gripe is, the amount of unfair deaths at times! You could literally flick over to the next screen and unless you know your way around each level, you can be dead the second you see what's coming in certain places. That annoys me on all games though, not just this one.
But please PLEASE do not take my criticism as anything other than constructive. This conversion has not only made me want to stick at this game (made it to the end of the second level so far) but makes me want to check other versions like the Megadrive version, maybe even the arcade version. And it's up there with the likes of the Dinamic games of the 80s and early 90s for the Amstrad (and I mean that in a good way), and I would have loved to have been able to show this to mates back in the day if this had come out back in 1990.
Congrats to the team involved. I'm enjoying this one!

Cool looking cover but giving Ocean the credit is somewhat of an injustice. ;)

hah, maybe I deserve that :)
I really recommend trying out the Atari Lynx version of Toki, definitely my favourite and very faithful to the arcade version... I'll be playing this CPC version some more, but it's a shame that it feels so much more unfair than other versions.

Nah man, I was just being giddy. Ask
@Nich about this shit. A lot of people who complain that a game is too difficult I have a nasty tendency to respond with "You're not trying hard enough". ;)
But to be fair, your criticisms were fair. I'm used to most of them because... well, it's the CPC. It's a great machine but it's far from perfect so some flaws, I've grown to accept :)
I am not sure if this is mentioned before. Why the shooting balls are in two colors and not in one? Is it somekind of limitation or a trick to look like the are balls being shot one after another and not in a straight line.
Maybe it's me, but I'm struggling a lot when trying to do diagonal jumps. If I press diagonal in cursors and jump key, it jumps straight in vertical. I need to press just the side key and then jump to make a diagonal. This is counter-intuitive for me.
I only wish for a cpr version to play this game on my amstrad 6128plus with Gerald's perfect c4cpc cartridge. Christmas came early this year for Amstradiens! A big thank you to Amstrad GGP!
Are the authors present on this forum?

The same here.
Well is the standard way in arcade games since forever I guess. Donkey Kong, Ghosts 'N Goblins, Pitfall, Bubble Bobble... Basically every arcade game but fighting games works that way.
Congratulations to the release and the pretty homepage. :) :) :)
Looks like a bug... Yesterday we got stuck here... No way out...
