Title: what are people playing on their cpc's this week ?
Post by: cpc4eva on 08:41, 05 April 14
just thought this might be a good thread to see what other users / members of the cpcwiki are playing on their cpc's / cpc emulators on a weekly basis or have been playing recently.

it might get others interested in playing a game they have not played for some time or maybe someone just needs some help or tips in a particular section they may be stuck on or it could be just for nostalgia and remembering the good old days?

working 2 full time jobs i dont get much time for games of any kind but this week i have had the urge to play cpc games on my emulator and i have been playing wec le mans and tag team wrestling.

what have other people been playing ??

More than playing, i have ported and now i'm testing and fixing bugs in "Serra Pelada (http://www.tilt.net/aventuras/serra/index.htm)", a ZX conversion to CPC from one of the first brazillian comercial videogames. It looks the perfect game for being the first CPC portuguese game ever, jajaja.

It's an interactive fiction game in portuguese and i'm using as a help to learn portuguese in the same way that i used "Jack The Ripper" and friends for helping to learn english during the 80s. Of course, i'm using as test bank for replacing firmware routines for faster ones for my improved GAC interpreter, too.

Alien Breed Tower Assault on my 1200 and Bare knuckle on my WonderMega. My FM Towns Marty should hopefully be with me next week before my 6128 should is back from having the disk drive refurbished and Parados installed. So nothing I guess...

I think Gryzor likes his Sega machines so here's some eye candy of the WonderMega, SG-1000 II Bryce RGB modded, My Megadrive with language and 50/60hz switch, MegaCD and Everdrive, and my hot-rodded ZX81 from BluesBrothers and TheCortfiot with ZXPand hanging off the back. Soon I'll have my modded SMS2 and SMS1 with its 50/60hz switch on it as well

Sorry for hijacking another thread...

Pwning the entire world on the SNES version of Sensible Soccer.

Whilst wondering how a CPC version might be possible. Honest.

Sensible Soccer would be cool on the CPC, but isn't someone already working on a football game?

Personally I'd rather see a Zelda-style adventure ;)

Maybe as "Mundial de Futbol (http://www.cpc-power.com/index.php?page=detail&num=1483)", but without all the bugs and a little faster, jejeje.

The last Zelda clone for zx, Brunilda (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/other-retro/goty-2013-for-spectrum-soon-on-cpc/), has its sources free for somebody take a look and try the conversion to CPC or make a new game.

i read recently that sensible soccer was a cpc project but they released kick off instead of it.
didn't hermol begin a zelda remake on cpc a while back im sure he posted a screen shot or 2 of his work somewhere i thought it looked rather promising and was keen to play it when completed but i never heard if the project was completed or abandoned ?

You may be referring to Demoniak's Zelda project (http://cpc-aventure.chez-alice.fr/divers/zelda/zelda.htm). I can't remember when he started work on it but I've heard nothing at all about it for several years; the page hasn't been modified since September 2006. :( It's a shame, because the graphics look really beautiful - but I never saw any actual code.

Probably the most impressive 8bit adventure game ever.  8)

I'm reworking a BASIC 1.1 program which makes use of the FILL command and I'm rewriting the program so it works in BASIC 1.0 without any RSXs or BASIC Fill Routines.
Originally the program was using some FILLs to setup the initial screen, which I've substituted with some workable BASIC 1.0 which produces the same result, however some FILLs are being used during the program to recolour certain areas so corresponding INKs aren't being shown and then Reverting those sections back to their Original Colour. I think I've figured out a way to use my existing routine to fill the appropriate spot, though will have to write some more code to check the position and use the relevant portion of the code, so it'll be interesting to see how big the program gets and how it will compare to the original.

If I get it working I'll definitely post a copy of it here.  :D

all cpc games ?

i thought shadow of beast was not great and not reviewed well on cpc ?

the pawn and lord of the rings dont ring any bells for me were they adventures ?

just saw on the AA reviews list AA gave shadow of beast 12.99/15.99    90    80    83    85    84 rave

must have a look see if it was AA rave worthy i really thought it was canned on 8bits and only great on the 16bit amiga ?

12.99 for tape and 15.99 for disk prices inflation was rife or was it rorting ? prices were getting pretty hefty back then.

I think the price of Shadow of the Beast reflected the nature of the release.. I remember the first Turtles game costing a similar price.

Pawn and Lord of the Rings are text adventures.

Shadow also saw release on the Spectrum (good) and Commodore 64 cartridge (not bad).

been playing Shadow of The beast, 10th Frame and r-type 128k

really didnt think much of cpc version of shadow of the beast no way did it deserve 84% and an AA RAVE from AA.

was playing 10th frame to see if i could remember the system i had come up with for getting a strike all the time but i failed miserably...

i did get quite a few spares but not one strike the speed / hook system i will have to look up on as im sure it had something to do with that.

r-type 128k was because a friend had brought up he was playing r-type on his phone so i downloaded the cpc games cd onto a cd for him so he could play it and ive ended up playing it as well.

Nothing so far, that's a shame.
I am hooked to some PC gaming mostly (Borderlands mainly, the Pre-Sequel has arrived. Also, I like to continue with Legend of Grimrock 2)
I didn't notice before that the new Zelda I am currently playing on 3DS (a link between worlds), is actually having the same map as the original SNES one (Which I started but never reached far. Only the Zelda on gameboy is the one I finished)

I am still thinking of trying to make a longplay of Blacklands though, capturing video of my attempts. It's a huge game that I never been able to finish and I think something was corrupted too, either saves or save states later. And there is no video at youtube or anywhere else showing much of this great game. I don't know when I will attempt this though.

Death Wish 3 on CPC (I love the over the top violence, of which I want to have some of in my RoboCop game cos the official Robo games were lacking in blood,  and also I love the awesome music).  Oh and enjoying another blast on UN Squadron which I still think is among the very finest arcade conversions ever done especially on the CPC  (lots of big, well pixelled sprites, music and 2 player mode all running on my standard 464, yay!)

For non-CPC I've been playing Gremlins 2 for NES (again good music and the pixel work is great particularly in cutscenes and the sprites).  Far superior than the very disappointing and completely different game I got on my CPC.

Picked up WWE AllStars for PS3 for £2 in my local charity shop.  I don't normally buy physical media anymore but that price was a bargain and the game isn't available on PSN so I tought what the hell.  It's a silly game but has most of my childhood fave wrestlers like Randy Savage, Ultimate Warrior and Hulk Hogan and is pretty fun to play so £2 is a steal.

Sadly not a lot  :(

Too busy still going through all the machines from my pallet. Last night I played Final Fight and Ghouls and Ghosts on my x68000, A bit of Galaga 88 on my PC Engine LT, AvP on my Jag after I still couldn't get the CD unit to spin up, Battle Heat or something like that on my PC-FX and some Doom on my 32x. My SD2IEC for the C16 turned up today so the plan is to play some of that and go down and get a CF card for my Final Expansion then try out the Vic20...

Did play some Zelda on the Philips CDi earlier in the week but the less said about that the better  .... I did love the TRS-80 though. Some nice games I've not played before and the speech is a scream.

Hopefully by the end of the week I'll be able to try out the CPC Plus monitor with my 6128+ and put the Pet SD on the CMB Pet.... but I have the Enterprise 64 still to mess around with, Oric 1 and about half a dozen other machines  :'(

Oh, I just realized that there are only two videos of Blackland and both of them show the intro, not even the main game. I remember there was a video in the past showing the start of the gameplay. Maybe I should really do the longplay at some point. I just have to think of how I should present this. The game is enormous and maybe I'll have to use save states at some points.

Well that's what I thought... using Winape - I insert the LSQDKIT1.DSK file and it appears to do nothing / have nothing on the disk. Nothing to "run". Whereas LASERSQ.DSK the normal game is fine.

That's why I was wondering if you need to load Laser Squad first, then choose load saved game or something....

Ok - I believe you! I've got the lsqdkit.zip file which contains LSQDKIT1.DSK & LASERSQ.DSK. So I do the usual (WINAPE) insert disc image thing, If I pick LASERSQ.DSK - I can play Laser Squad. If I do this again I try to use LSQDKIT1.DSK - nothing, zip - no action, CAT gives me no files... I'm just not sure what exactly I'm doing wrong...

Try as I might, I can't seem to get anything happening with LSQDKIT1.DSK

Can you list out you exact steps? or heck, even upload a snapshot file (.sna) of the Expansion pack loaded!!

Thanks

1.Try getting a new Rom Dump from CPC Power of Laser Squad-Kit 1, (which is what I did yesterday)
2. Load up WinApe
3. Select the Disc File LaserSquad-Kit 1.open up that file.
4. WinApe does the auto load thing and Bobs your Uncle .Et Voila .
The only problem I can see that you have is that Rom you have is not the right?

None of that ever bothered me cos the game itself was just so enjoyable and had so much going on.  Easily among my fave shooters on CPC.

Also you can play it at a 'normal' speed if using Turbo mode in WinApe.

Hm, I never played the Speccy version of UN Squadron, but I don't see colour clash or monochrome screen in the CPC version, it's MODE 0 all the way (or I am confused and thinking of another game?). It could probably have been done better on the CPC by utilising the CRTC, but the game as such is fine and playable.

If he's right then I think he means it's one of those weird cases where the code is ported from Spectrum but the graphics are all (beautifully) redrawn in Mode 0 based on the original 16-bit/arcade game to make much better use of the CPC's superior graphics abilities.  So I don't consider it a Spectrum port really cos it's actually had effort poured into it, at least on the graphics side of things.

Post by: MaV on 16:58, 31 October 14
Yes, that's probably what he meant.

Was there a 128k version of it? I can see TFM's point when one has more RAM, as most CRTC techniques require a bit more RAM to work properly.

As a game which has to work on the 464 as well, the choice for a smaller screen and lack of hardware scrolling was likely made out of necessity.

Yeah but I always felt it was one of the most 'complete' games available for the 464.  Very little was cut out from the original game.   They didn't even kept in the large character portraits, mission briefing screen and shop whereas the C64 version reused the small status panel portraits on the select screen, and cut the briefing and shop graphics down to only include the character's head.   The game sprites are much smaller on the C64 version as well (in some cases almost half the size of the CPC ones) and obviously lacking the extra colours the CPC could fill it's sprites with.

By the way does anyone know why CPC-Power is down again?

1.Try getting a new Rom Dump from CPC Power of Laser Squad-Kit 1, (which is what I did yesterday)
2. Load up WinApe
3. Select the Disc File LaserSquad-Kit 1.open up that file.
4. WinApe does the auto load thing and Bobs your Uncle .Et Voila .
The only problem I can see that you have is that Rom you have is not the right?

Brilliant - thanks! Must have been the expansion kit files I had were no-good.

Yep.  I don't agree with the bad reviews it gets, it's a charming and enjoyable game that captures the concept of the movies well enough.  As I said before in another thread I wish there had been a sequel game that built upon the general gameplay of it greatly (I think it was in a topic about the game Arachnophobia which is similar but with the higher quality you'd expect from a later game).

Well today I am playing 'Invasion of the Zombie Monsters' an amazing console style platform game on my 464 Plus. Fast scolling, smooth animation. Amazing that this is  a homebrew title, had it been a commercial release it would easily be best looking platformer ever reviewed by AA.

Lol not really.

But yeah those "character" based engines can actually get nice result and this game has sweet intro and so on... And good to have a game quite comparable on those 3 machines.

should do Enterprise version as well...

So true.  Also I prefer the version of the game that DOESN'T play the theme from 633 Squadron.  Classic tune sure but I prefer the other music from the alternate released of the game I have on cassette.  Helps give the game more  of it's own 'character'.

Perhaps the 512KB of rom in a cartridge could make it possible (fast screen copying), with sprites and DMA sound to help the processor.

Out of interest, have any other 8 bit machines got doom port? So long as the result is not anything like the awful speccy ported Space Gun.

Sly Spy
Batman the movie
Invasion of the zombie monsters
Rainbow Islands

Now I am fighting with the awesome new bubble bobble and Mountie Mick's Death Ride.
I am sure that I can't finish them without a cheat, especially the second one  :-X

Also I am trying the great game rolling thunder but it has unresponsive controls.

The emulator selection is amazing. I am a bit suspect over the legality of their free downloads of apps that are paid for in the play store, the same goes for the emulator ROMs.

OK this will be the last S7800b comment in this thread... This is such a good device it just proves that android is crying out for a plus/gx emulator. I would live to play the best pang home port on my new toy, but can't. I wonder if there would be interest in a S7800b as as prize for an android plus emulator. I'd donate £30 towards the purchase price of the prize console.

Playing Space Harrier II at the moment, I have to say I think SHII is a brilliant port, I was quite happy with SHI with its wire frame graphics. But the sequel tops it , moves at a decent enough pace (for an 8bit), Lovely colourful graphics, great music and there is very little noticeable  slowdown . I think they did a good job with this , great bosses and an enjoyable challenge.

Starstrike 2 again, this game never ceases to blow me away whenever I delve into it, so much variety , and all done with superb skill and presentation, plenty of action and a little bit of  depth to keep you involved. Far superior to Elite IMO although different game in many respects

Hmmm Starfox , yes that one needs to be checked out , not really looked at that one, Starglider, I really want to enjoy more than I do , whenever I play it . I never seem to get very far in it ? I'd like to see a playthrough/guide of it.

Here's a hint: To replenish your energy, find a power line (a set of three pillars) and fly very slowly between two of the pillars, aligning your ship with the third pillar, while hovering just above the ground.

I like both the Space harriers probably mentioned it before , Don't find it particularly sluggish on SH2 .

SH2 yeah it's not the quickest thing in the world , but can you really see an Amstrad throwing all those sprites around any faster ? Apart from doing it with wire frame like the first one? don't think it's a bad effort really , Especially when sluggish comes to mind with most games on the amstrad .

I have never been a footie fan. If you cannot pick the ball up and run with it, what's the point ;)

However I do love the occasional kick about on Manchester United Europe.

Well in Kick Off, i could take the ball and run in "8" around the opponents players...

How bad was his game (also it was far greater than it's sequel!).

There is only three soccer game i still play on CPC : Emilio Butrageno (too easy but really fun), Matchday II (i like to play two player at once by redefining the keys to the same configuration) and Emlyn Hughes (the best amstrad soccer game imho).

And one day i'll add the game sigh is (slowly) creating.

it is good if you stick with it, the balance of maintaining  M.A.D (Mutually Assured Destruction) was not easy but an amazingly originally idea for a computer game, you could laways play to lose and let them blow up the world.

The games I like on the CPC aren't sluggish when compared to games you mention. Space Harrier (Amazing), Wec le Mans, Dan Dare 3, Robozone, Robocop, Operation Wolf, Mr Heli... The list goes on. I liked U.N.Sqadron, but it's too slow to be playable, so what's the point. Outrun and Turbo Outrun were the same, ruined the experience for me. Well, it's all subjective at the end of the day, but there's no argument that if Space Harrier 2 on the CPC ran at the same pace as the original, it'd be playable, and Space Harrier and most SEGA games are all about speed.

I enjoyed Space Harrier on the CPC. It's fast although it is vector like and if you look the graphics scale smoothly.

I was curious to see if it really was line drawn, and looking at the code I'm not convinced it is. The vector graphics appear to be stored as sprites in a special compressed format so drawing a scanline at a time. I can see that doing that means there is hardly any pixels drawn and it will be fast. So although they may have been designed as vector graphics they seem to be pre-converted into sprites.

There appear to be functions for drawing various runs of pixels.

So it doesn't appear to be "pure" vector graphics i.e. drawing lines from point to point.

The man is a sprite and has a mask stored, so effectively 2 times the graphics used up *BUT* this means it is fast to draw.

Like I said, I enjoyed Space Harrier a lot.

@ukmarkh (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=34): I understand where you are coming from. I found the same with Outrun and Turbo Outrun, they are a bit too slow, and it's more of a challenge to endure the game rather than to enjoy it and finish it.

For me contintenal circus is fast, and if outrun had been the same then I think it would have been much better. I feel for outrun perhaps they did too much maths and tried to do real 3d projection to make the road work instead of doing an approximation. Doing 3d roads on 8-bit and 16-bit is more about good fakery than doing real maths.

Well I will enjoy Space Harrier and Space Harrier 2 equally. And for different reasons . I am in the minority in rating SH2 , but I think it is perfectly adequate , there is a great variety in stages and bosses and it plays and a pace that is acceptable. I really can't see the CPC ever pushing the amount of lovely sprites about the screen . More than this does . Which I know isn't the point that bothers you but still, I really enjoy the game when I play it , so consider it a successful game on the Amstrad .
Anyway, as you were..

This week after a long time away from my emulator.. I am playing Guild of Thieves by Magnetic Scrolls.

I never played it all those years ago, but I do remember the adverts and good reviews. It was definitely one I wanted.

I am really enjoying it. I didn't think I'd stick with it long, I thought I would just play around a little while but I've been making some steady progress and have been on it every evening so far. :) The puzzles are all sensible so far, once you solve them (!), and there is plenty to do and some funny moments too. I am doing my best to resist googling for help or solutions, just trying to recreate that 80s feeling of being on your own with it and waking up in the night with ideas about how to get down in the cellar without the rats killing me!

No spoilers please! :)

I played ATF last Sunday for the first time in over twenty years and it felt good.
I then played two (very) quick games of Tank Busters, scored zero each time and that didn't feel so good. On the bright side, I didn't need to keep filling a slot with ten pence pieces as I had to back in the early eighties. And now..........its a grudge match.

I've got quite far into level 2 now and came across a vehicle too, definately never got this far back in the day.   The level 1 situation with the machine gun guys seems almost a bug, they can't be killed with any other weapons.

I don't think I played any of the wally games when I was a kid, will have to check them out.

I've started writing out a list of all the games I remember having, one way I've been doing that is looking at games on ebay as I remember the covers quite vividly, like a game called Future Knight, completely forgot about it but then saw it on ebay and all the memories started coming back.

I had a good run at a few games yesterday.

Ghostbusters: It was a rushed cash-in, but I actually enjoy it from time to time. It's pretty cool to actually try and rack up as much money as you can in a "beat your last score" kinda way.

Spy Hunter: Another fun romp for a while. It's just unfortunate that you're driving around the same map in different colours with a few new enemies. Playing it on Expert is somewhat of a challenge too.

Grand Prix Simulator: Still prefer this over Super Sprint, despite the blocky cars.

Street Gang Football: Not sure why I never got to play this until now. It's not a bad little game, shame the graphics weren't a bit more colourful, but they move a lot better than a lot of soccer games out there.

IK+: Hadn't played this in ages, got the stuffing knocked out of me though once I reached brown belt!

Target Renegade: I'd actually forgotten how very difficult this game gets after you kill the boss the first time around. Your time limit gets so tight and the enemies get so much smarter. Still a great blast from the past.

Platoon: I don't know how ANYONE has managed to finish this game. I always get stuck on level 4! Either I get hit with a stray bullet or I keep grazing myself off the barbed wire or tripping on a landmine.

Oh... and all were loaded from tape in an act of true nostalgia, because I still love my 464.

In addition:

Bubble Bobble (original Firebird release): Made it to screen 42, surprised myself.

Mr. Freeze. Sooooo sloooow, but not a bad little game once perseverance (and stubbornness) kicks in.

Laserwarp: Defeated The Master for the first time since 88!

Played since my last post:

Bombjack: A true classic but 11 minutes to load from tape is insane to think about today!

Gauntlet II: were any levels past level 9 or 10 designed to be seen on one credit? 😂

Breakthru: Couldn't get my tape to load for years when I had it, then got it going. Strange shoot em up from an even stranger Arcade.

And final game of the last weekend was Robocop.

I've finished this on the Spectrum, and still haven't finished it on the Amstrad! I make it just before the final screen and then get nailed before I finish it.

Some day, I'll get there though.

So I was browsing around looking at this and that, and I came across a review for 'After the war' its a Spanish game, no problem I may have to swot up on Google translate for some bits but what the hell, a good game is a good game.
Then I discovered it was released in UK and reviewed in AA52. Could this get any better?
I downloaded the dsk and then a lightbulb went on..... I had a look at my ancient tape collection and lo there it was as handy as you like. No need to download the instructions then!
How odd I had it all these years. And totally loving it for this week and the next 😎

After The War is a class game. A lot of Dinamic's games had a tendency to be well written and look really well.
They also had a tendency to be quite difficult too. I always managed to get to the end of After The War, part one, but never had either enough energy to defeat the end guy, or I'd lost a life somewhere and respawned so far behind that I'd run out of time by the time I got to him the second time around. Stupidly strict time limit on that game.

There are also English and Spanish versions of most Dinamic games too, handy if you're like me, can't speak a word of Spanish and you need to redefine the keys!  :D

This week so far!

Robocop: After 30 years, I finally finished the thing. Bucket list!
Hunchback: Also finished this today, did two and a half rounds of it and racked up a nice big score to top the scoreboard.

A good week and that's with barely any playing time!

Currently playing: Frank Brunos Boxing.
Got this on budget in 1988 and was really disappointed with it at the time due to the fiddly controls.

Hindsight being 20/20, it was the closest thing we got to Nintendo's Punch Out at the time of it's original release, and it's actually a lot of fun too. The last few guys are very difficult. The Italian guy (Ravioli?  ) has been kicking my ass the last few rounds.

I've been playing a few GX4000 games today, Batman and Crazy Cars II.  Batman is strange with the slowdown, seems to happen mostly when Batman is near the top of the level (level 1 I haven't got past the Batmobile level yet).  Crazy Cars II the music could be used in a torture chamber!  It's taking me back to being 14 again playing the games in my bedroom on my Tatung 14" CRT connected with Scart although I had neither of these for my GX.

Batman on cartridge is an abortion. I won't go near it, the slowdown is just too distracting.

Had a visit from @CraigsBar (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=482) earlier today, so there was some 2 player fun to be had on a recently repaired GX4000 (bandy joystick ports lost some pins so new ports had to be fitted).

We treated ourselves to rounds of Gauntlet and Rampage. Much fun!

I was playing batman again last night, I've got to the batwing level. I do pefer the coloring of the gx4000 version but the slow down is annoying on level 1.  Oddly the slowdown seems to happen most when batman is at the top of the level.  Maybe the original game code was optimised, while the code for gx4000 used an early code release before optimisation, i think they were released a couple of years apart so quite possible the code releases were different.

As i was told by an expert coder (i dont know if he want his name here cause i know that he wanted to do something related), the ocean code for batman, robocop, darkman etc, is anything but optimized, it's wasting memory having the scoreboard twice, and he told me that can rewrite the code to make this games run at a much higher speed.

I was playing Master Chess tonight by Amsoft/Mikro-Gen against the computer on the easiest level, given the renewed interest in Chess lately with Joseman's CPChess developments...
I knew I was bad at chess, but I thought I at least knew most of the rules. I got to a point where the game would not let me continue.
Computer said "check with mate in 1 move". As far as I could tell there was only one move I could make to get my king out of check, but the computer wouldn't let me do it. When I pressed the R key for a hint. The computer recommended I move a completely different piece on the board which would have resulted in my king being taken. Not sure what happened there, so I just quit the game  :P
I thought that when your king was being threatened by check it was illegal to make a move that deliberately keeps yourself into check, but apparently the computer wanted me to make a suicide move ;)

That is very interesting since for example RoboCop already packs in quite a bit into it's initial tape load on a 464.  First couple of levels, nicely animated sprites (the legs being quite smoothly done), mini-games and a couple tunes all in there.

I LOVE, Robocop, Batman the movie and Darkman.

As he told me, if you use a vertical rupture and separate the scoreboard from the buffer (and have the 2 game buffer en #c000), you can gain 2k-4k, and apply the modern sprite routines with this free memory.

So I had another play with this tonight I think the slowdown is in the music only not in the graphics difficult to tell without a side to side video but while the music labours the actual movement seems ok.  I guess the laboured music gives the impression of game slowdown but it seemed to play ok.  What is causing it is strange, would be good to get some answer on this and see if its possible to fix the cartridge version as the colours are much better than the original when compared side by side, a much more subtle palette.

I disagree a bit. I'm not a fan of the GX Palette of Batman at all. Maybe cos I was just used to the original but I genuinely felt that they took a great game in Batman and made it worse for the GX between pricking about with the colours and the music slowdown which still distracts from the gameplay.

They took a fixed game, and they broke it.

This week I've been having a GX4000 fest, been playing Pang, Navy Seals, Fire and Forget II, Crazy Cars II, Copter 271, Pinball Magic and a bit more Batman.  Copter 271 could be better and suffers horrendous slowdown, maybe some better coding could have made it so much better, Fire and Forget and Crazy Cars are ok but definitely lacking any real enhancement and even the graduated sky flickers on crazy cars.  I thought pinball magic was quite good.  Pang is good fun and makes good use of the enhanced capabilities and my kids were playing it, Navy Seals was a demonstrator but bang hard!

I utterly tanked on Kwik Snax, so I put it away for a bit.

I spent a good chunk of the bank holiday playing Leaderboard and Leaderboard Tournament. On novice level as I can't be bothered trying to get the joystick timing for hook and slice just yet. After playing Leaderboard Tournament, I can't really go back to Leaderboard. The faster course drawing speeds being a good part, but equally important, the putting gauge was slowed down for a more realistic response in Tournament, it's next to near impossible to putt in the original.

Busy few days ahead, but I'm sure I'll be attacking my 464 in the next few days with another update.  ;)

Out of that entire list for the GX4000, Pang was the only one I found enjoyable. I've said it before and I'll say it again, but the GX needed to come out a year earlier. I think it would have seen more success and Amstrad may have capitalised on that to aim to fit in with the 16bit market later on.

They rushed Pang, I'm not saying it isn't good, but in later levels it's bugged as hell, balls get trapped, collision detection is way off and it just serves to ruin what should have been a great game playing experience. I find it almost impossible to progress without cheating, I don't have this issue with the Amiga or arcade version. So I know it's not me. I think people like to claim it's great without fully experiencing it to its fullest, it would be good to know how many people have actually completed it without cheating?

Pang is ok, makes good use of the enhanced capabilities, nice coloured background, no scrolling and hardware sprites.  The whole GX/Plus thing was a disaster, in hindsight I  they made the mistake of sticking to the z80 and releasing too late, by then people were wanting Amiga, ST, Megadrive,  definitely 2 years earlier and it could have done well and probably sustained the machine beyond its final days maybe a couple more years.  Maybe they should have forgotten the whole cart thing and just provided the enhanced capabilities in the plus models accessible with normal tape and disk.  Then develop a more advanced machine around a 16 bit processor  I wonder what processor they would have gone with, 68000 like Amiga, ST, Megadrive or could they have gone with something like the Intel 286?  What else was available at the time?  I can't see Amstrad having the clout to develop their own custom processor.  Its a shame its not possible to turn back the clock and see if things could have panned out differently.

Enjoyed Impossamole. Never finished it though, my patience wore thin as it just plodded along as a game in general. Done by the same guys at Core who did Rick Dangerous II I think.

Played a bit of green beret because it was the first thing I picked up when trying to test my CPC to scart cable.  Its not an awful game in my opinion, although I think lot of people would disagree, it is a tough as I remember but I must be a better gamer now than I was when I was 10 as I got further much quicker than I remember.

Played a couple of the games on the 6 hits compilation by Beau Jolly, Gauntlet (defender clone) and Killer Gorilla (Donkey Kong clone), both are pretty good.

Also play a little bit of burning rubber, Switchblade, Robocop, Stryker in the Crypts of Trogan.

Only playing 5 or 10 minutes at a time though.

Finally finished Bruce Lee like I did back in the glory days.
That laser thingy level is the one I hate most.

Now my off-topic quote:

Two years ago I saw Bruce Lee 2 on the PC that was ported successfully to the brown machine.

No love for the CPC???

I tried Green Beret again a few weeks back, still s#it! This game badly needs a remake, hopefully once Ghosts n Goblins is done.

I think the general perception of any CPC game depends on whether or not you saw the original Arcade game version first.

I never played the original Arcade version of Green Beret - loved the CPC version.
But I played a lot of Bubble Bobble on the Arcade - absolutely hated the CPC version.

An exception to the rule: Loved Mr.Do. Loved Fruity Frank.  :)

It's bad, sluggish controls, crappy sprites, crappy jingle like tune, decent background graphics, gave the CPC a bad name, definitely harmed sales as everyone from that point forward believed the CPC couldn't scroll. I've completed it many times as I was stuck with it as a kid, my mum paid over a tenner for it from memory. I don't believe anyone was that blinkered back to not know that the CPC version had major issues.

Well I liked it.  :)

It's not like I don't understand or see what people are complaining about though.
But I remember, as a kid, thinking the bad scrolling was part of giving the player the tension.
(I also remember two mates laughing at it though).

I do recognize that the controls aren't the best - but since I didn't try out the original Arcade game, I just assumed that's how it was. And I enjoyed the game a lot.  :)

No way is it that bad.  I got it as part of a Konami 6 hits pack, my main issue at the time if I recall was just how damn hard it was.  I never once saw it in the arcade (and still haven't) nor played it on any other format so had/have nothing to compare it to.

Green Beret?  One of my least fave games I own for CPC though I got it on the Ocean Top 20 compilation for 99pence so it wasn't a bad buy since there were so many great games on those tapes too.  But yeah crappy game, but I never liked the arcade game much to begin with.

recently I been playing Stryker in ye olde crypts of trogan, magica, Island of Dr Destructo and Back to the Golden Age.

Meh, fuck the haters. I enjoyed Green Beret as well *and* I played it in the arcade first. People who obsess about scrolling in 8bit video games clearly need to get out more, I'm sorry, but it was a 64k with limitations. At least it didn't blend in with the background! Plenty of games had similar treatment Ghosts N Goblins, and nobody complains about it there, despite that game also being marred with dreadful flickery sprites and missing half the game!

The controls weren't the worst either, but the collision detection was my biggest gripe in the game. Sometimes it didn't recognise your stab and you ended up colliding with someone you thought you hit.

On topic:
Just finished a 72 hole game of the original Leaderboard after getting used to the faster putting compared to Leaderboard Tournament.
Novice level, but managed 72 holes with 23 under par, which I didn't think was all that shabby. Some of those courses are a real nightmare to navigate!

Ok so more from recent sessions.

Pub Trivia Simulator - First got this in the Quattro Coin-Ops collection around 1992 and was hooked on this due to the music and showbiz questions. The sports ones can take a running jump though, was never into sitting in watching people run around fields. Managed a score of 3850 (Average), I'm ok with this.

Donkey Kong - I keep coming back to this one, didn't do so well this time around. Got to 75mm on level 2. I usually do better than that, didn't bother noting the score.

Chuckie Egg - One of our esteemed posters here showed me a screen grab of his score with a message saying "Beat that, Buster!" Of course, what he didn't know was I got a good practice run about two weeks ago, and his score had only topped mine by about 500 points. I gave it another run, and topped his by about 15,000 points, totalling mine to 89,890 points.

Not bad before Sunday lunchtime, if I do say so myself.

Pub Trivia Simulator - Made it to Bright! Score = 5750. Again due to the Showbiz and Music questions

Donkey Kong - Better today! Level 2, 100m. Final score: 43800.

Paperboy - Despite the inexcusable lack of sound, I still loved this one and still do today. It's still very playable. Probably the most playable out of all the 8bits. I think I made it to either 13 or 14 days and racked up a score of 99,250. Was gutted that I didn't make it to the 100,000 mark but it just got trickier the further I got on. It's not bad for a game that essentially loops.

Rampage - Was always a fan of this in the arcade. One of the first multiplayer games, I think it even predates Gauntlet but don't quote me on that. It's also criminal that the budget and compilation versions changed the loader and removed the two awesome loading screens.

Managed to get 8728 on one credit.

Sadly it's a speccy port, that makes it slow, the screen area small and the scrolling jerky.

Hm that required a bit of searching through old posts to find out what you were referring to having quoted a reply from 2014. :P

But you meant UN Squadron?  The SNES game is excellent.  Lacks the 2 player mode which even the CPC version does well (for some reason most of Capcom's early SNES games dropped the 2 player mode but it's less notcable here than in Final Fight, thankfully Street Fighter 2 kept it)  but it's very playable, smooth, fun and has a mission based structure
Certainly one of my fave 16 bit shooters and one I go back to often.  I'm a big fan of both the CPC and SNES games for different reasons.

I never thought I'd be saying this about this game...

Beyond The Ice Palace - I've actually managed to make it off the second level without using a cheat! Got up to level 3 and was completely taken by surprise by the return of the dragon from level 1. It's doable it seems, once you have the power sword from level 2 as a weapon. I also remembered never to take up that sword in level 3 cos you reach a spot where two daggers are beside each other and you WILL end up picking up one of them, losing your weapon and the rest of the game is impossible!

Weekend project: To defeat this one with no cheats and no snapshots!
Final Score: 24180

WRONG!
The arcade counterpart only had one life. And technically so did the CPC version, except it offered 3 chances to continue it. But the SNES version wasn't 'ruined' because of it. If anything, it made it more faithful to the arcade.  :)

Didn't ruin a damn thing.  It's a great game and well-regarded by most gamers that played it.
Even many years later it's getting good reviews.  IGN rated it as 37th best SNES game and said '
QuoteProving that Konami's Gradius series wasn't the only shooter worth playing early on in the SNES library, Capcom also offered up an energetic port of their arcade game, U.N. Squadron. This game is nuts – a side-scrolling shooter starring real-world jet fighters instead of spaceships and featuring a cast of anime-styled characters, it packed in tons of power-up items, explosive boss battles and even a running cash total for your pilots. You could use that money to buy more planes and wilder weapons, of course. Even crazier was the fact that Capcom went the extra mile for this SNES port, actually infusing it with even more options and upgrades than the arcade original had. Home console ports usually go the other direction, sacrificing content in order to fit the home format. Not U.N. Squadron. It soared.
and a Nintendolife review said
QuoteThe opening level may seem a little too tough but the difficulty curve is otherwise well judged in what is a challenging game. The occasional instances of slowdown are unfortunate but there's not much else to fault with this excellent shooter. With some great music, varied levels, exciting action and interesting bosses, U.N. Squadron is a game that's enjoyable to play through again and again.
and gave it 9/10.

I certainly consider it one of my all time fave shooters too.  Definitely one of the ones I played most, particularly back in the SNES era along with Axelay.  Only thing missing was the 2 player mode.

THIS, and to be honest, the two player mode didn't stop the show either. It wasn't a deal breaker for Bad Dudes on the 8bits.

As for 1943, in the arcade and on the CPC, it's not crippled with being overly difficult... I remember being able to complete both. In fact the CPC version is probably too easy, there's a balance, if you go under or over then the danger is you lose your audience. You have to find that middle ground. But Lets get back to the CPC and what people are playing 🤪

Yeah, 1943 on the CPC is way too easy.  Largely because when you pick up a POW, you get all your life back.  As opposed to the arcade version, where POWs only give a tiny amount of life back (although there are items that give more or even full health, but are just a lot rarer).

actually no I'm not... The 1943 comparison was strictly to prove my point that one life is not the be all and end all of games on any format. That being said, 1943 was easy on every format. C64 is even easier.

IMHO one life is bad game design, to bleat otherwise is foolish 🤪 I've never completed Beyond the Ice Palace without slightly cheating, another game that could have been great, but too difficult and not enough lives...

Games like Renegade, Shinobi, Operation Wolf, Robocop and Wec Le Mans are all good examples of games where the balance is just right and the allotted lives and energy feel as though they were dished out fairly. But there's many examples of games where one life is never enough, especially on the CPC...

It's called a challenge. To bleat otherwise just means you're not cut out for it.

Partially agree with you on BTIP, Mark. On the surface it's too difficult, like most games where Cecco or Perry were involved with. But persevere with it and you'll see that the monsters spawn in exactly the same place on each go. This allows you to develop a successful path. It engages your brain. To say there's not enough lives when you get nine of them, sorry but I don't get that. They're only not enough if you don't learn from mistakes which is what arcade games were kinda like anyway. If you weren't careful, you lost your credit.

Operation Wolf was one life only too, and far more difficult than UN Squadron, so you're kinda contradicting yourself there with that statement. I do agree with the rest of your examples though.

I'm gonna agree to disagree on this and leave it there because we could go around in circles on this. I'm just not the kind of guy who wants to finish a game on first load. Especially as I was a tape loader back in the day, so if I got some sort of challenge from a game, I was okay with that.

Bloody hell, are you still bleating! Please agree to disagree as you are wrong! Operation wolf was not one e'ffing life! If you died, you could continue on the level you died on, you didn't have to go back to the eff'ing start and lose everything. Stop protecting bad game design. Next you'll be telling me that Green Beret is a good game on the Amstrad! [emoji23]

Treasure Island Dizzy took me ages to complete. Mostly due to the fact that my original tape version had the bug where the game reset as soon as you entered the water! Once I finally got the fixed version, the amount of backing and forthing got to me after a while (if only we knew what Spellbound Dizzy had in store for us a few years later!). But I got there in the end. :)

Green Beret has been done to death on this forum. I still enjoyed it, sure it didn't do scrolling (neither did a lot of games), but to me, the biggest fault with Green Beret was the collision detection. Sometimes your stab wouldn't register, therefore making you lose a life when you really didn't need to. End of level 3 was also a nightmare trying to time your rockets to hit those helicopter type enemies. I think I may have finished that level once around 89, but I never finished the game. Might try today.  :)

Quote from: ukmarkh on 23:44, 21 April 18I saw God of War for sale in Game yesterday, £47.99 I was like no chance, I'll wait until it comes down to around £25.

I don't normally buy AAA games on release day (partially cos there ain't many that seem worth it to me and also I'm unemployed so couldn't buy lots even if i wanted to) but this one is absolutely worth it.  I got me the digital deluxe version for about £48 on PSN and it's a huge game of the absolute highest quality.  None of these overpriced regurgitated bits of crud like call of duty, the yearly fifa and such.   And these highly focused single player games like God of War with no micro-transactions and no lootboxes absolutely need the support of gamers even just to show the greedy companies like EA and Activision that there are game dev companies like Santa Monica and Naughty Dog out there who treat gamers with respect and take their time crafting a game with lots of love and care rather than having to rush out half-assed crap all the time.  :)

oh forgot to say i was playing a bit of chase hq on the cpc emulator on my PSP this morning while stuck outside waiting for a guy who wanted to buy a chair i was selling and my flat is a bit tricky to find. :P

I would pay over the odds for a GX4000 version of Outrun!

How much would that be?  For an 8-bit video game cartridge that even if using the Plus features will still not be quite the same as the 30 year old arcade game it's based on?   How is that worth 'over the odds' yet approx £50 is far too much for a high quality state of the art video game that took at least five years of development and cost millions of dollars to make, offers many hours of gameplay and from what I've heard and read is highly replayable after the main story is completed (I haven't reached the end yet so cannot confirm but I bloody love playing it)?   Console games have always been expensive but some are definitely more worth it than others.   It's a lot more difficult for a system exclusive game to sell a lot than it is for a multi-platform game to do so yet a lot of exclusive games are cheaper than those (Sony's first party dev games like God of War and those from Naughty Dog such as The Last of Us and the Uncharted series have all been far cheaper than games such as those from Activision and EA).   I always like to see these kinds of games do well (when they deserve it which these ones clearly do)  and it pains me to see when great games don't sell well and the developers are disuaded from doing anything else in that genre.  For example, Housemarque are a company who have done a lot of great arcade shooters for PlayStation and PC but their best game Nex Machina, which is a superb top down shooter made in collaboration with Eugene Jarvis of arcade classics such as Defender, Robotron and Smash TV, sold so poorly they have now quit the arcade shooter genre because they just couldn't afford to do it anymore.  Their new game is apparently some kind of Battle Royal thing (like Fortnite, PUBG and all that kind of thing) which I personally have no interest in.  I mean great if it can help them pay their bills but them quitting the arcade shooter genre they were so damn good at makes me wish I'd at least bought Nex Machina at full price of £15.99 rather than had waited for the sale price of £7.99.  I kinda feel guilty when I play it now. Knowing I'm at least a tiny bit responsible for the non-existence of follow up titles.   I like to see quality game developers rewarded.  Even in the 8-bit scene I happily buy new releases when available of the digital versions of 8-bit games even for systems I don't care for (I've bought many C64 titles) even just for appreciation of the scene (even though I don't play those much I'm often impressed by their quality and ideas and such).  I don't buy the physical versions for various reasons (I don't buy physical of modern system games either) but I buy almost all the digital versions and have even given a few quid each to various developers when they've released games for free.  Just to show my appreciation that they'd made a game I thought was fun or interesting.  I can't go nuts cos I'm long term unemployed.  God of War motivated me to do a 'spring clean' of some old stuff onto eBay finally (and I made about three times the cost of the game anyways.  :D ).  Yes there's difference between hobbyist indie developers making 8-bit games in their spare time and those folks full time employed making AAA modern games but at the end it's all people putting a lot of their hard work into creating these things.  I've been meaning to give @reidrac (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1504) some money for the enjoyment I have got from his games. I can't recall if maybe I already offered and perhaps he declined? I shall have to check.  I do have the posters of Magica and Golden Tail at least. :)

Ugh I probably babbled but anyways those be some of my reasons why I not only feel God of War is worth the money but also that quality developers of any scene should be encouraged more when they create something that clearly has so much love and effort put into it and money is gonna always come into it with these things.
Anyways I hope you do enjoy it when you decide which price you feel is worth it.  It's a really good game that I'm hoping will do really well (I already know of a few Xbox folk buying a PS4 just for it so that's encouraging in itself, especially since Xbox is seriously lacking in exclusives..and the ones it does have... well... You wanna look up Sea of Thieves if you wanna see a game that is not worth the money.  It could be good, but there's barely any content in it for an expensive game).   Ok I'm done with this subject. I doubt I can change your mind at all but I felt I should explain why I feel about it the way I do.  :)

Anyways BACK ON TOPIC. :)
Just got home from rehearsal where I ad continued my Chase HQ game from this morning while waiting for my scene.  My one scene in the whole darn show.  And then I played Stryker in the Crypts of Trogan (I like that it push scrolls at the edges rather than Switchblades flick screen and the character is actually still controllable during the fast scroll onto the next screen.  It may be basically a pseudo-sequel of Switchblade but it does have some nice engine improvements).

I said that with tongue in cheek as we all know it's never going to happen. Saying that, I love supporting the CPC and other 8 bit communities, if a game did come along that really needed my support, I could definitely be pushed to support it, but supporting new CPC games and current next gen commercial games is completely different for me. I recently purchased the new Kevin Toms Footy Manager game in good faith, only to find out that I needed to spend more to unlock additional features. It's this kind of sickness that plagues modern gaming, so I'm more likely to support an indie title or old CPC project where you get the whole package and more in one purchase. Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice shame on me... So I will wait until God of War has reduced in price to around £30 -35 and then purchase it. Why the hell a digital download costs as much as the same game with cover and DVD in 2018 is beyond me, but the cynic in me says we're being taken for a ride.

It hasn't happened yet. Went on a long cycle instead. Maybe tomorrow.
But i actually enjoyed Green Beret when I first played it in 87. It's far from perfect but it's nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be. Ghosts N Goblins has the EXACT same flaws as Green Beret but for some reason it's praised more. At least Green Beret kept all it's levels.

You're convinced I'm a Nintendo fanboy. Only Nintendo console I bother with is a WiiU. Laugh all you like but I lost 3 stone due to Wii Fit U in large part.  ;)

For the record, you have admitted you never finished Beyond The Ice Palace without cheating.
So you don't ALWAYS win. And that's okay.  :D

I'm insulted. Plus I was always more a Mortal Kombat guy anyway.

I use save states occasionally when I'm really pressed for time. The way I see it, save states are redeemable of it means finishing the game in one sitting in the end.

I wish the C4CPC in conjunction with my GX allowed for save states, so many games I'd like to invest the time into, especially with a pad, but don't have the luxury of a single gaming session.

I loved MK, but I don't seem to play it as much as SF2, hopefully we will see the likes of SF2 on the CPC soon.

Back on topic:

Green Beret: I'm blaming @tjohnson (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=2129) for this. I enjoy this to be honest. It has it's flaws but then the same people who bash Green Beret would spend hours floating on Space playing the most boring game on the planet better known as Elite, so its horses for courses really.

I'm doing pretty lousy at it. Although I had 54km (35m) cycle earlier and a couple of drinks after so I'm not quite with it for gaming, and given the games poor CD, you need your wits about it. So I'll give it a few more runs.

UPDATE: Got to end of level 3 again. End of level is badly glitched as once you run out of rockets to kill the end of level choppers, the pilots can't be stabbed. So it's either have a perfect aim for all four, or you're dead. A frustrating glitch but I'll see if I can do it again tomorrow.

I'll be attempting another go at Pentomino in survival mode to see if I can get a less embarassing distance into the game....

Other than that, I'll be playing FM Touch on the Switch, if I can wrestle it away from the wife who is hooked on Splatoon 2.

Is it just me, or does the Story so Far box with the 8bit logo look like a Megadrive?

Hahah I've often wondered if that's what Sega modelled the design on, myself. 😂

Green Beret: ....

UPDATE: Got to end of level 3 again. End of level is badly glitched as once you run out of rockets to kill the end of level choppers, the pilots can't be stabbed. So it's either have a perfect aim for all four, or you're dead. A frustrating glitch but I'll see if I can do it again tomorrow.
...

Wait, ive never had Green Beret glitch like that (cracked version?). I mean i wasnt particular good at the game at first and sometimes id enter the lvl 3 boss without picking up a rocket launcher too, but once on the screen, the blue bonus weapon trooper would away spawn & upon killing give me a new rocket launcher. Same if i ran out of shots .. just wait untill the current enemy runs off the screen or kill him, to get a new blue bonus guy run in (and kill him to get another rocket launcher). Good luck  ;)

Was playing the CNG version, but I also recall seeing it on the Konami Arcade Collection version too.
I'll be giving it another go in a few. Wrestling with some very old tapes that are quite stuck in terms of playing, fast forwarding and rewinding! 😂

@cholo Surprised myself and managed to make it to level 4 tonight. The glitch is still present on occasion even on the original version that I loaded from an iPod, usually after you're shot down the second or third chopper, so I guess the key is to improve my aim.

Hopefully will finish it tomorrow!

Ah ok, the blue guy may perhaps not respawn as fast as i remember, like outside on the normal lvls he only spawn ever so often, but with a bit of patience he always end up respawning. May take a while but as long as you arnt carrying a special weapon & wait he'll end on coming. You can also use this to your advantage on particular nasty sections .. aka before entering a particular nasty/crowded areas, simply find a nice "safe" area like on top of a ledge, carrier, catwalk, platform etc. & just kill the shooters untill the blue guy spawns & he will even gladly climb the ladder up to you just like the shooters.

Oh and good luck. You will need it on lvl 4 & on as they litterally do things to ramp up the difficulty like 800%. A bit unfair if you ask me, remembering you are still just a single guy taking on a infinite sized army with just a toothpick (Darn you devs, lol)

I'm slowly discovering this. The special weapon for that level is awful too. Very non responsive.
I've just about nailed levels 1-3 though. Just need to figure out how to get through 4. Racked up a nice score tonight, 92080. But failed to finish it again so I've settled for this for the night.

Only got to do some proper playing on the Sunday. The weather kept me outdoors!

1943 - Oh dear oh dear. Musically, it was there, graphically it was there, but four screens and a loop around makes this somewhat of a disappointing conversion. I can't help but think if a bit more time and a few more levels had been added to the mix that this could have been so much better. Still, not a bad way to kill 10-15 minutes while a Windows update was installing, but once you've done those four screens once, there's really no going back to them.

Punchy - Complete Hunchback ripoff, but I enjoy these kind of games. I'll probably give it another couple of attempts tomorrow just to see if I can finish it. As it stands, I'm about halfway through. Late night impatience got the better of me, I guess.

Ah yes, If 1943 hadnt been that short it would have been a real classic. Its saving grace is the 2 player co-up mode thou. Dont get me wrong its not near Ikari Warriors 2 player or Silkworm 2 player but its quite ok & does give the game a difficulty level as you have to share the power-ups & its easier for 2 players to mess up and the game is only "easy" as long as you are fully upgraded with the machine guns. A good game if you have a friend visiting who arent particular "amstrad gaming savy". Still barely a hours worth of gameplay in this one.

Park Patrol - Suddenly remembered this one. Aint too bad for a 2 bucks budget game. Does suffer for the "super sprint difficulty" a bit .. aka in the attempt to implement different difficulty/speed levels you end up somewhat crippling the beginning of the game. Of cause later levels play at a much smoother speeds & controls. Also i guess it does suffer a little from mode 0 fat pixels.

Got a bunch of stuff in this week. 4 compilations.

SDI: First game I loaded from the Special Action compilation. Criminally underrated game that hits a very frantic pace from about level 4 onwards. Graphics are Spectrum like but it plays quite well. Made it to the defensive half of level 5 for now but will definitely return to this one before the week is out!

Xevious: Probe software before they got completely and utterly lazy. This one has all the hallmarks of coming from the design team of Slap Fight a year or so earlier. The arcade of this was fun and so is this conversion. Looks well for an old game, scrolls nicely enough for a vertical scrolling shoot em up. Easy to control and not requiring the need for a second fire button. The first choice of load from the Space Ace compilation which quite honestly, doesn't have a bad game on it!

I personally found both of these games to be boring, poor translations to the Amstrad CPC. There's no real challenge either, the same goes for 1943... Have you ever played 1942 for the Amstrad, what were Elite thinking releasing that?

I actually quite enjoyed SlapFight, but for me that tiny screen and slow pace does kill the experience a little, the colours do look amazing though.

While digging thru old discs a few months ago I found SlapFight, that one must win an award for having the smallest playing screen on the CPC - or was there anything worse?

Yes! Supergran.
Your playing area was small compared to the size of the sprite you had control of.
At least the sprites for Slap Fight matched the playing area!

So testing the Special Action compilation that arrived in bundle 1:

The Vindicator: Am I the only person on the planet who doesn't get the idea behind this game? All I seem to do is wandering around aimlessly in and out of rooms and occasionally keying in codes (anagrams of all the programmers), wasting bullets and eventually dying. It's a game I keep coming back to despite not getting any further in!

Driller: Freescape bores me. Was more a test to see if it works.

Captain Blood: I will actually sit down over the weekend and read the manual for this. It looks beautiful but I don't have a foggy notion in terms of what I'm supppsed to be doing in this game at all. It looks like a steep learning curve to be honest. But in terms of presentation, it's up there with one of the best on the CPC.

It's quite possibly one of the most difficult CPC games I've ever played. And to think that Ocean almost marketed this as a sequel for Green Beret. Thankfully Konami released an official sequel later that year called M.I.A!

I couldn't understand it either, kept getting lost. Ended up skipping the first level, but the rest was mediocre at best... There is another game where the first level sucks like this, I think it's Thunderzone, giant mechs have to navigate through a maze like structure, massively boring, but after that the game gets really good.

Not so hard : Your mission : find the coordinates of the five numbers (your five remaining clones) and teleport them into your ark so that you can kill them and get back your life fluid.
You go on a planet (the first one is always populated) then you navigate on it (but thanks god, on the Amstrad port, this tedious part is avoidable by ESC), then you talk with the local alien until he gaves you a mission and one or many coordinates, so that you can meet more aliens, so that they give you more missions and coordinates so that you can progress in your search.

Even if the quite small number of planet on the CPC port makes it possible to cheat (that's how i finished it the first time : try each planet until you find someone), the right way to play the game is to avoid by all cost counting on luck and just talk with the guys you already met until they give you more informations.

EDIT : 1000th post for a post on my favorite game on CPC, yay !  ;D

A bank holiday of retrogaming begins as I finish testing some of the box sets I got this past week!

North Star: I think this came with Ten Mega Games vol 1, but I can't be sure but that's when I first played it. It's bundled with Space Ace which I'm finishing testing. I've always had a soft spot for this one.
Amazing tune once again by Jon Dunn, probably some of his best work of I'm honest. The game itself is a bit on the tricky side though, I've learned not to move too fast because you simply can't break in time in order to avoid a collision!

On the positive, I did manage to get past the second level! Which I consider an achievement for North Star!

Cybernoid: Lovely graphics, but load it for the music, because it's the only thing you'll experience from start to finish, unless you use a cheat, but fuck that!

I own Northstar, but labelled it as one of those games I will come back to (that was thirty years ago) as it didn't grab me from the off. I will try to give it a go this bank holiday [emoji1303]

If i recall right the maze in Vindicator is quite logic so if you get in trouble you can draw a map. The trick is that they arnt linear so you get confused & double back a few too many times. You do get a compas of sorts to help you navigate, but i guess the game would have been better if it had had a mini-map like Death Wish 3.

Then its just getting around to kill enough aliens to get keys, ride the elevators & use the terminals. Of cause that isnt as easy as it sounds. Ive always had trouble juggling the different "strength" ammo myslef but i guess the trick is to use the low "strength" ammo when you life bar is full, make sure to pre-fire if you know you are entering a new room & get ready to duck the alien shots. Takes a little bit of practice but aint hard to do once you get the hang of it.

I guess the game suffers a bit from being programmed by "the old generation". Aka you get sent into the dark wood by yourself & have to remember your way back .. even without breadcrumbs. Today kids have google maps & gps  :D

...

Cybernoid is indeed finishable. Most of the game you can just shoot your way thru, however there is some real nasty "green wall maze with unkillable patrolling ships" in there that is incredible hard to pass as they require correct timing & 100% pixel perfect movement skill. Infact i can only recall making it thru the game using a real "the arcade" or "competition pro" joystick. Now before we all accuse Raffaele Cecco of bad programming, lets not forget that the game thankfully has a "invisibility" bonus that even being extremely short on time should get you past all the "walls" screens .. except the very last one where you need to show off your coordination skills at least past the first 1-2 walls before triggering invisibility & race thru the rest.
One general trick to the game is to take your time as well. Some screens are also perfect for "harvesting" bonuses, weapons/bonus items as as long as you stay in the right area the enemies will continually respawn & you can then stock up on everything, before moving on.
Cybernoid 2 however is great too & is thankfully free off the "perfect" requirements.

Before I get started, I want to correct my previous post. North Star's music wasn't Jonathan Dunn's, it's actually Ben Daglish, who did a lot of stuff for Gremlin too, but this is still up there as one of his best.

Finishing off the Space Ace compilation testing, I literally saved the best for last.

Exolon: Fuck me, how and why did I never give this game a proper chance back in the day? Typical Cecco game, so it's infuriating to play. But by the same token, it keeps dragging you back again and again. Lovely graphics, ok tune. I've made it to zone 22 so far, so I can't imagine me surviving just over 100 more. But I'll definitely give it more of a go over the bank holiday weekend.

Space Harrier: Managed to beat my personal best making it to level 10, but this game should be more aptly titled 99 ways to die! I'm not a fan of vector graphics in general, but given this game's arcade counterpart, I completely understand sacrificing full sprites for the speed. Without speed, this game would be nothing. It's frustratingly addictive though, you know you're going to die repeatedly and then you'll die some more. But when you hit screen 10, KNOWING that you've only six screens left to go. It's really difficult to put it down.

I don't like using cheats though. Any idiot can beat a game that way, nullifying the achievement.  ;)

You'll probably die and never complete it [emoji15] it's one I can complete, but trust me, there's plenty I can't...

Yeah, thx [emoji1303] I'm trying to do it without cheating on corner 3, purely staying on the track, so I think 50.3 is good so far.

Well this is it. I'm the same, I've seen the end of many games that others haven't. It's all down to persistence at the end of the day. The respawn/infinite lives culture has killed off gaming for me these days. I love GTA for example, but let's face it, you can't lose at the game, can you?

Just back from a 2 hour cycle along the coast. So gonna have another crack at Space Harrier in a few.  :D

The problem with GTA is that the game instructs you on what to do next, you have to follow the mission based script in order to progress. So not a true open world experience in that sense, but it's still massively fun. There's still a few games out there you can lose at, but these tend to be indie titles, but disappearing fast.

Moving forward... in my vain quest to find a cassette version of Karate Ace, it turns out I have most of the games on separate compilations anyway. So played some games from it.

Work's a bit quiet at the minute so I've WinApe on a surface pro, so I got some quality gaming time in.

Bruce Lee: This one is an undisputed classic, fight me if you think otherwise! I can usually finish this one blindfolded, but for whatever reason, I bottled it on the screen with the electric floors today. A lot of sentimental value on with this one as it came as part of the very first game compilation I ever bought (They Sold A Million II, bought from some dodgy geezer selling it door to door of anyone they knew had a computer). It's so basic, but even though you can finish it, there's something very relaxing about playing this game. It's one where if you're already on autopilot, it helps pass the time, or if you're on a bad day, it can help relax you. As my signature says, forever playing Bruce Lee.

Kung Fu Master
: When I first loaded this up in 1988 (when I first got my hands on it), I was bitterly disappointed with this arcade conversion. Elevators? Where's the staircases? And what's with the blocky mess in regards the guardian at level 3? That being said, it's still quite playable, although hitting the space bar to alternate between punch and kick can be a bit of an inconvenience, but thankfuly you really only need to use the punch for levels 4 and 5 (a kick for some reason knocks the 4th guardians head off, and kicks don't seem to register with the 5th one). I managed to finish this once in 88, and never again since. Today was no exception, I got completely wiped out by the end of game guy. It's just a disappointing re-loop anyway.

Have you played Bruce Lee on the C64, if so what are your thoughts?

I personally thought Kung Fu Master on the Amstrad was a half decent conversion, but no music for this type of game is criminal.

I'm glad you asked, but you'll wish you hadn't!
I think it had a lot of potential, but they ballsed it. It goes downhill rapidly after the loading screen.
The title tune is quite possibly one of the worst examples of the use of the SID chip that C64 fanbois rave about so badly. It's painful to listen to.

The game itself would be fine if it wasn't for the piss poor controls. Half the time Bruce runs, he seems to stop for no apparent reason, which is really frustrating when you're trying to jump the electric floors. And that is what ultimately kills the game, because for any platformer, the movement *has* to be fluid. Going back to Green Beret, sure, the lack of scrolling kills the game for many, but at least the movement, and the screen transitions are consistent, so it's still playable (if not frustrating for some). When your main character stops in mid run when trying to jump a gap or over an object, it's only going to be a matter of time before you just give up on it.

I double checked to see if it was an issue with emulation too, but it happens on my C64c as well, so it's definitely a game flaw.

I've played the Spectrum, Amstrad and Commodore versions of this game, and I'd honestly rate the Amstrad version the highest, when the Spectrum second. Although the Spectrum is too easy, it does win points for the fact that the Yamo will actually climb up vines and follow you.

I used to play games with the radio or other kinds of music in the background, so lack of background music doesn't really bother me. The fact that it's near impossible to beat the final guy is frustrating!

I actually found the third screen workaround (where you duck under the fence to move to the castle screen) before finding the actual way through (going back to the second screen). It would take months before I'd finish the entire game due to this.

Only time I use the workaround now is to show people unaware of it.

I'm not sure when I got my copy either, think it might have been from a local car boot or market. But yes, I really enjoyed it and it's one of the few games I've actually completed on the Amstrad. That level where you have jump over those moving discs on the floor would nearly always scupper my progress.

This morning I've been playing two proper classics, both of which are frustratingly difficult, but still make you come back for more.

Ikari Warriors: Fun as this is, but without a tank, you're completely stuffed. And even when you get to the river, it becomes increasingly difficult to avoid fire from the overhead choppers as well as dodging the grenades lobbed at you. Still, an awesome game for it's time and a fine conversion from the arcade. It's sequel, Victory Road isn't too bad either, but for whatever reason, AA cut it down to ribbons.

Continental Circus
: I FEEL THE NEED! THE NEED FOR SPEED! I used to be really good at this one, but now I can just about finish Brazil, and even when I do, I'm lucky to qualify to get to the next track. I'll be giving this a proper run later in the evening, I reckon. It's probably the fastest pure racing game out on the CPC, Burnin Rubber and WEC don't match this one in terms of speed, especially Burnin' Rubber's slow acceleration which was a real drag. A lot of love for this game then, and a lot of love for it now.  :)

I attempted playing IW a few years back and couldn't get very far, though it didn't seem so difficult to tell you the truth. Back when I was 13 or so I remember it being hard, indeed, but not impossible... I certainly never finished it, but I always got quite far, and it was fun indeed!

Oh totally. I don't mean to say they're impossible. The patterns remain the same, so it's just a case of figuring out the least likely way of getting hit. :) I'm also at work, so I can't put full concentration into the game just yet. It came as part of my bundle yesterday (Fists N Throttles was one of the compilations), so only getting to play it now via emulation, much as I'd love to play the thing on real hardware here!  ;)

It'll get loaded up tonight for sure. I think the rest of the sets were tested. Just not FnT because it's Elite loaders, non protected BASIC loaders, which mean they take forever to load!!

Ikari is interesting in 2 player mode, as you have to stay within a certain distance if you are behind the other player otherwise the lead player freezes. A friend of mine who is more used to modern gaming finds this "old stuff" bloody hard! Still it's good fun to work as a team to get further than just 1 player.

I am currently still learning to fly in my latest purchase,  Gunship. It may be easier to play when not drinking though  ;D

A large chunk of downtime at work after lunch so, got to play with the following:

Ghosts N Goblins:
Don't ask why, I don't know. It's not a great conversion at all, but it still keeps grabbing me back. Still can't get past level 2, but I may attempt to put a little more work into this over the weekend. Will see how I feel though.

World Class Leaderboard: Cited as the best out of the Leaderboard games, I'll go out on a limb and say colour doesn't make this one at all. Teeing off and pitching is fine, but it's horrible when trying to putt. Often you'll lose strokes because your ball is too close to the hole and it's near impossible to gauge. Shame because if the putting hadn't been so buggy, it would have been a vast improvement. So Leaderboard Tournament still leads the three in my opinion.

Green Beret:
Went back to this and finally beat it after 30 years. No cheats, no save states. I'll probably come back to it again to see if I can repeat it, but that final level is a real challenge. Especially inching your way to the guy with the flamethrowers when you've no grenades left.  :D

A new week! Got my hands on Solid Gold, completing my Gold Collection series!

Winter Games: I used to have a lot of fun playing these, still do today. Bobsleigh is still a fun event to play and you need your wits about you for that final bend! Biathlon bores me stupid though. It goes on and on and on forever.

Gauntlet: I don't really need to say anymore. Great conversion, even better with a second player.

IK+: I used to rule the school at this, now my skills are a joke, can just about manage a purple belt with a score of 31,600. More practice is definitely needed on this one!

Whoot update, got well into level 3 of Jail Break today 20/5, top score of 123500 so far.

Yeah I'm not even sure if I even managed to get off level 2 of Jail Break. Tough game with fiddly controls adding to the disaster.

Over the weekend, I played:

Turbo Outrun: Not a great game, but not a bad game either. Still a lot more playable than it's predecessor, granted that wouldn't take much. The problem with the arcade version was that they didn't keep the whole choice of tracks theme, so there wasn't as much to hook you as there was on the original.

Supertrux:
I loved this game, and I still find it fun to play, but extremely tough. You're barely allowed crash if you want to make it past the second stage. Swinging a left from London to Brux served as a massive pain in terms of a track to play, but keep to the right and head to Paris and it seems a bit more doable. I'll probably give this another run later tonight.

Sidearms: This had so much potential, but the lack of speed and the main sprite too big is what lets this game down badly. That said, it's quite playable if you can persevere with it. Made it to level 3, and then got crucified with the one life I had left on it.

It came out in 1988.  It would have been an extremely advanced game graphically for 1984 CPC compared to other games released that year. :P

Spent most of the weekend enjoying the good weather, and attending a Christening. I did get some retrogaming time in though, and this one was influenced by Xyphoe's stream about Elite's arcade conversions on Friday night.

Buggy Boy: The lack of speed sadly impacts the game in a negative way, but other than that, it's still very playable. Managed to finish the Offroad track a few times now, but North, South, East and West is proving to be somewhat of a challenge. So I'll need to get more practice in. Which is exactly what I'm doing during quiet time in work right now.  ;)

I used to love Buggy Boy back in the day, but on my big bro's Amiga. Was a little disappointed when I borrowed the CPC version from a mate...

We had it on the Amstrad, really liked it until we played the C64 version, never went back to it... It doesn't hold up well today either, but the challenge is there if you like your racers sedate like

The C64 version looks surprisingly smooth!
I keep meaning to try the arcade game, although I don't have the screens to emulate its triple screen set-up. Looks awesome though!

I agree with @ukmarkh (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=34)  back in the day it was a fab game, I remember borrowing this from a mate at school.
It was addictive.
It hasn't stood the test of time for me, especially as the sheer variety of CPC games available to us now are so much more than your local shop back in the '80s could ever hope for.

Thanks to a Facebook challenge: Flying Shark

This isn't the best of games but it's certainly not the worst. It's a little more sedate compared to 1943. Wasn't a massive fan in the arcade initially but I did play this to death when I got it as part of the 'Taito coin-op Hits' compilation.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. I still can't get past level 3. But I'll be returning to this as there's only four levels in the game.

It's fun. But you do need your wits about you for it!

Well I finally managed to do it, got to level 8 on Jail Break with no cheating, after level 5 where you rescue the prison warden the game loops back round to level 1 again and restarts.  Level 3 is probably the hardest level, followed by level 1.  Level 4 the easiest.

Respect for that! That is NOT an easy task to say the least. I must revisit it, but the awkward controls put me off. Switching weapons can easily kill you.  >:(

Thanks, I have been playing this as my main CPC game for a while now and was determined to finish it.  I got on a roll and it all came together.  I tend to stick to the pistol, use the grenade launcher for the fat men and the rocket launcher for the vehicles.  Other than that keep going and don't try and shoot every convict. On level 3 I shot a hostage just as I was reaching some fat men so lost the grenade launcher, fortunately I found the game sent a woman hostage regularly if I waited so was able to recover the weapon and continue without losing any life.  I got used to the controls.  To think I got this for my birthday and I would assume it was about 1986 it has only taken me 32 years to finish it.  I watched a video of the arcade and its not a bad conversion, the backgrounds a pretty consistent with the arcade but the rest is simpler.

Been playing the following today...

Chase HQ: Haven't given this one a proper play in weeks. Made it to level 5 on three credits. I think I've only ever made it to the final level once, and that was when I was 13 years old back in 1989. I'm not sure I have the dexterity to play up to accelerate games like I used to have anymore, tbh.

Manic Miner:
I got pretty far on this last year, but I've lost my technique since. I'm lucky if I can get past The Endorian Forest these days!

Oh absolutely.

I'm still okay at a lot of games, I just can't stand racers which require up to accelerate anymore. It's bloody painful. 😂 Would be better if a redefinable option for the stick was available. Always the GX4000 hack though if I play it on my 6128+.  :)

Same developers (Probe Software).  Only they they made Ninja Scooter Simulator faster, more controllable, and shoved the difficulty way too far up the easy side.

I assume there is a tehcnical reason for the low number of colours used. Maybe to gain processortime?

Have been playing far too little for far too long.
Today I wanted to play The Very Cruz Affair though. That's a game I've kinda been saving ever since I saw a cracktro for it back in the 80s. But I couldn't get it running on my CPC plus machine. So today I loaded it on my CPC464, but after the first screen it didn't work.
Does anyone have any info on this? A patched version? Does it require a CPC6128? What?

This thread (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/longplays/chinnyvision-super-robin-hood/msg101908/#msg101908) explains the technique. In short, it is a lot faster to use this technique than to use the full palette of 16 colurs.

I was thinking of finally playing Nigel Mansell's World Championship from Gremlin. But then I noticed there's two versions, a 64k and 128k version. The 64k version is on s CDT file, so no way of loading it on s real CPC at present. My question is, does the 64k version run smoother as it appears to have reduced graphics? It sure is possible to use a CDT on a real CPC.
I myself use a homemade TZXduino clone for that purpose. It's kind of a Gotek drive, but for tape files (hence CDT files).
You could also convert back the CDT to WAV/MP3 and play it back to your CPC thru any MP3 player + CPC tape lead  :D

Loved Rana-Rama as a kid, never did complete it, but sunk hours into it. There's so many games on the Amstrad that just loop, Bomb Jack, P47, 1943, Ghosts 'n Goblins. Tonight I've been playing the new games released for the 2018 retro game dev competition, and the top five games including a Tetris style puzzle game is brilliant. There's also a Gauntlet clone that's quite good [emoji106][emoji2532]

This series of games seems to be relatively unknown even in its native France. All the games are very similar to each other, with the graphical theme being the only significant difference - but they've proved to be an entertaining diversion nonetheless.

In my top 10 list.
I played all version, loved the Amiga one but the DOS version had unlocked framerate.
Also the new BBC version is fantastic.

The ST version is a little bit faster than the Amiga one too but without the sound of the creaking wooden boards on the turns on either of those two alternate versions the game loses a lot of atmosphere. You can of course play the ST version on a Mega STE (16mhz 68000) or an Amiga 1200 but I can't remember if they work on either upgraded model....will have to go and check now.

Of course the 8bit versions didn't have that so for them framerate is everything.

TNT is a compilation? Or was that on the 8 bits. I will have to check that one out, maybe look at them running side by side.

I was playing Z by Rino Software, I had this on my own C64 but my best friend who had a CPC never bought it. It's surprisingly nice actually, very playable Time Pilot 84 type game.

Cheers will check that out  :)

I was quite impressed with Alien Storm, thought it was another game that puts the CPC 16 colour mode to great use. Surprisingly good conversion of the coin-op.

Played "Le Necromancien". An awesome (french) adventure game. Finished it! If you understand French, play it, you won't regret it.

I enjoyed playing Star Raiders II on the CPC a lot (hideous on the C64 and great on the Atari), also played Rescue on Fractalus is OK too but just as slow as the C64 version so not quite as responsive as the Atari versions. Probably a lot of room for 6502 to Z80 code optimisation missed out there.

Been given Who Dares Wins II a run again. A fun little game in my view.

Finally managed to source an original Alligator version which makes it all the better.... Lol

We had a couple of friends over 2 days ago, bringing their retro computers, just to sit and play the retro games all day. So I finally had some time to catch up.
Finally got to try that new Scramble game. Exactly as I hoped it would be. Well done!

I used my CPC6128 this time. Had previously used my Amstrad Plus which didn't wanna load a lot of the new games, including Shadows of Sergoth. My CPC6128 didn't want to either. So I still haven't checked out this game.  :(
I wonder why it won't run. My only suspession is the Megaflash which might eat some memory that is needed, despite only 1 ROM was flashed. Or maybe I have an old buggy version that has since been fixed?

Also finally got to check out the Pinball Dreams preview which didn't run on my Plus either, but ran fine on my CPC6128. Very impressive, as everyone has already said long ago. Cool to play on a 40" LCD using an X-RGB Mini Framemeister.  8)  And cool to see my C64 mate with wide open eyes and mouth.....  "....is that Amstrad?!"    ;D

Cheers!

I cracked with Flyspy and used the cheats! Infinite everything! I felt sad.....

So now i've completed it, I feel less sad. I'd never have done it without the cheats!

What should I play next? Been popping in and out of The Sentinel!

It only takes 20 minutes? I liked the game back in the day (shhh, don't tell @chinnyhill10 (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=984) !), but I don't remember progressing much!

OTOH the final boss seems ridiculous with that predictable jump...

Also, what the f does the guy say at the end? "ha-ha, ha-hah *&^$&*#@?"

Currently playing Impossamole.
Finished the first four stages, but the Bermuda level really is next to near impossible at the best of times.

Hopefully I'll get more practice in at the weekend and finally scratch it off the bucket list.

For once my CPC is set up, and I have been playing a lot of Pinball Dreams in the new year, enjoying the smooth 50 hz display. (And still pondering why so many people are seemingly satisfied with 50 fps youtube videos and emulation on their 60 hz PC monitor).
It's getting more and more rare to re-experience that childhood mood we had when gaming on the CPC, but Pinball Dreams did it!  :)

I'm only allowed play Pinball Dreams when the house is empty due to the game rage inducing experience that is the Ignition table.  But yeah, it's pretty awesome and was well worth the wait. I didn't even bother with the one table demo. Waited til the day it came out and regretted nothing. :D
