Nice choices, My feelings on Lightforce ,were quite pleased with it at the time and It was a pretty nice shooter compared with alot of the rubbish in the field. I found it needed some power up system ,just to liven it up a bit .

Commando is a cracking game and I didnt choose it myself because I was after the forced vertical scrolling games . Rather than choice made scrolling( Yes I know the topic title is woefully slack because it should read Vertical Scrolling Shooter). Commando was/is awesome on the CPC imo though ,graphics could be better but the gameplay stands out . And I can live with the slowdown on some later levels. CPC version tops the old C64 version purely for the fact it has 8levels rather than the 3 on the C64 version . Which is a great version except for the cut down levels.

SlapFight. Yeah I didnt mind that version of it , I thought it was a respectable enough port for the CPC . I enjoy playing it from time to time ,and prefer it to Xevious which was similar in its delivery.

Oh Slap Fight.  I did enjoy that one.  I used to load it up even just to dance to that upbeat happy theme tune. :)
Favorite CPC games: Count Duckula 3, Oh Mummy Returns, RoboCop Resurrection, Tankbusters Afterlife

I really loved LightForce, too (the original disk lays around here somewhere). As the main menu from THE DEMO uses some gfx of it, a LightForce remake with hardwarescroll would be great.

Anyone also into it ?

For me, Slap Fight pales in comparison for the same reason Xevious would.

Graphically and scrolling, Slap Fight is a winner but what the hell is the point of a shoot em up when you can't see the bullets due to the flickering or the tiny size of them?!  ::)
Currently playing on: 2xCPC464, 1xCPC6128, 1x464Plus, 1x6128Plus, 2xGX4000. M4 board, ZMem 1MB and still forever playing Bruce Lee.
No cheats, snapshots or emulation. I play my games as they're intended to be played. What about you?

Light Force was great. I agree. Great example.

And concerning the "dead machine" stuff... I was just wondering: if something like this emerges in a different medium:

How can someone think the CPC is dead? And I thin is something really interesting and too look for because theyr're dealing and caring about the peculiar aesthetic  of the machine... Can't wait the final sci-fi promo to see what other CPC elements are in there.
Long live the CPC I would say...

flying shark is fun to play. sonic boom is not so bad. mystical has a poor two-players mode.
avoid typhoon of course.

I never had a problem with it.  Used to get quite far and was a game I'd regularly go back to over many other shooters I had at the time.

Yeah I played it a lot in 89 when I got the Taito Coin Op Hits compilation. But it used to frustrate the hell out of me being hit with invisible or flickery bullets that seemingly came out of nowhere. Was a huge fan of the coin-op as well.

CPC version of Moon Cresta was also pretty decent.

Moon cresta was not bad version, bit disappointed they didn't refine the collision detection

Honourable mention goes to Mastertronics Xcel. Nice scrolling and some fiendishly challenging levels. Just too bad some of the sub plots made no sense.

sigh

For me it would be Mission Genocide and the recent Dragon Attack. Those games exhibit the smoothness, play area dimensions and responsive controls needed to make vertical scrollers work.

Depends on the definition... My all-time fav on the CPC is Lightforce as well, because I just really enjoyed it. Quite simplistic, but it played very nice and I have very fond memories of looping through its levels (it doesn't end). I also loved Flying Shark. Not a great port of course, but the cuteness of it more than made it up for me.
