I'd love to know what people consider the greatest VS,on the CPC. I personally don't think the best has been made yet . But would love to see a really great examples of different genres  to show the sneering CPC haters ,what a capable machine it is. I have come to the conclusion that the machine is far far better than what people have always thought. And it's image has been utterly tarnished by lazy Spectrum ports(No revelation there) which can also be said for the MSX.
My personal thoughts for best vertical shmps are .
Graphically.... 1943
Scrolling/Screen Area/Sprite movement... Mission Genocide .
Now if some programming genius could combine those two and produce the greatest Vertical Shooter ever...
Is Paul Shirley the only guy that is able to pull off that scrolling? Or has anyone else ever got the gist of how it is done? Another question. Is the game size 18K? For Mission Genocide?
I always look at Mission Genocide and think we only had a small bunch of gifted guys who found the best out ,back in the 80's. If only the CPC had the Programming talent that was focused on the Spectrum . A truly different story would have been written.

Mission Genocide is no doubt the technically best. The scrolling technique is well known, many demos at that time (or shortly after) used it.
Flying Shark was playable iirc :)

But yeah I agree, this is really a game type the CPC is well suited for, with proper hard scrolling. I had some idea for this, but oh well, time....

You realize you could get paid for producing a good game for the machine?! You have a game idea? :)

There is this playable preview from Fefesse called, I guess, Axys. It's 50hz. Can't find it right now, maybe the title is wrong.

Ah, here it is:

I'd add Xenon by Melbourne House, Stardust and Silent Shadow by Topo Soft.

In terms of classic games, how the hell has this thread to manage to get to two pages and not ONE person has mentioned Marauder?

It absolutely wiped the floor with Flying Shark!
Currently playing on: 2xCPC464, 1xCPC6128, 1x464Plus, 1x6128Plus, 2xGX4000. M4 board, ZMem 1MB and still forever playing Bruce Lee.
No cheats, snapshots or emulation. I play my games as they're intended to be played. What about you?

yeah Marauder moved nice and smoothly

I will pay above the odds to see a game that is pushing the CPC and showing what it really is capable of. Genuinely TBH I am not particularly fussed about paying for games that there are hundreds of decent examples already on the machine.
I reckon if some of the good game designers in the CPC scene put a vision of what game they are going to do . I expect a smaller scale kick starter sort of affair could be got together.
I know it may seem a pointless venture to some ,making games for a dead system. But How I see it is the retro scene is only going to become more valuable .As antiques of the future . Smaller games that have nice packages will become highly sort after . I may be wrong.? But I think even as a labour of love with a maybe a few hundred quid to the  game producer plus the respect of being a genius programmer.

Yeah good call , I was surprised at how well they did with that game Marauder was produced with a modicum of respect for the machine.

...a "dead system".

Doesn't seem dead to me at all.

Anyway, it will depend on genre for each individual.

I was personally very fond of "Teodoro", so I donated to the author. But I've since learned that most other people didn't like that game at all, which I still find weird.
"Dead on Time" is also a favorite, so I donated to the author. His other space-shooter "Star Sabre" didn't appeal to me though, but everyone else loved it. Again, different people have different taste.
And the CPCRetroDev is an awesome initiative, so I donated to the creator there too.

I think we should all definitely donate to authors of games we enjoy. That's how we keep the platform alive.  ;)

Now everyone go buy a 4-player adapter and play some "Space Rivals", and donate lots of money to me.  8)

talk about trying to find negatives? lol give me a better term then. Semantics . A system that is not commercially sold then.

I suppose "niche platform" would work? As opposed to mainstream consoles.

But "dead" to me implies complete lack of interest; that everyone has left it. That's not what I'm seeing for the CPC. I'm rather seeing an increase in interest. More and more people join this forum for example. More and more games and demos and new hardware stuff are created for the CPC. Definitely not dead, but indeed very niche - which is the awesome and geeky part of it.  :)

FFS. ^^^ Stupid editing system.
(My Post this relates too)

Dead System (Not meaning hate toward machine honest). Just perspective of potential people who may not see the value of working on titles on a system not commercially available.
Yes The CPC is a great machine and def not dead ,as the Wiki goes to show a thriving community.

I never implied you meant it in any hateful way.

Working on a game for the CPC can be commercial. Working on a game on any other platform isn't necessarily commercial.  ;)

In any case, I believe that you may create a commercial game for Android + a freeware game for the CPC - and end up making more money on the CPC game in the form of donations than you do on your commercial Android game.

Don't worry, I can tell the difference between a jolly fellow and an arse.  ;)

For me the best vertical shooter ever made for the CPC was Gemini Wing.

Really!?
Vive la difference . I didnt mind it . But it seems to be unloved by lots of gamers on the cpc.
I quite liked Dragon Spirit(or Breed, the vertical shooter which ever one it was) I thought it was pretty decent game apart from having such a large main sprite was a bit cumbersome with the reduce screen aspect ratio . Played alright though Imo, and had a nice selection of power ups . Bastard hard though ,really have to learn positioning for enemies etc

:D Some may find that hard to believe , David Banner  Incredible Hulk if I bite my lip though .

Targhan

Teodoro? Never heard off this one. It looks beautiful. Damn, there are still so many games that are unknown! This is really strange it still happens.

Sykobee (Briggsy)

I have a small soft spot for galactic plague, terrible as it is. It was my first vertical space shooter and it was colourful and I didn't know better.

I then moved onto Lightforce and that was way way better.

Marauder was a favourite of mine back in the day too.

Ideally I'd like a smooth 50Hz scroller like Mission Genocide, with better graphics.

I also had Dominator, which had great graphics, but was a little slow.
