Where did "Roland goes Digging" come from?

I'm interested in finding the original arcade game (not for CPC, but for MAME), from which clones such as Roland goes Digging came from. Does anyone know what game that is?

Yea, sure looks like it. Will try to find it.

Anyone knows of other Amstrad games similar to Space Panic besides Roland goes Digging?

Well, I recall a Retro Gamer article on Chuckie Egg where the creator described it as a direct cross between Space Panic and Donkey Kong, so there's elements of it there, certainly.

Ah, better yet, just found the article on NowGamer. Indeed the developer admits being embarassed now at how much he lifted from space panic ;D

Hmm, I don't think Chuckie Egg is anything like Space Panic or Donkey Kong....

Well, it's creator Nigel Alterdon seems to disagree. Info at the top of the article at this link.

Personally I see quite a bit of Space Panic in Chuckie Egg. Particularly, the rapid movement and ladder running of the main characters feel extremely similar. Chuckie's certainly different enough in its own right though.

I think the ladders are part of too many games to say that it's derived from one particular game. I've always felt that the main gameplay with Space Panic wasn't about the ladders, but about digging the holes.
That part is included in Loderunner too, and there's a fine Amstrad version of that game in MODE 1 as well. I forget the name though.

Are there no other games similar to Roland goes Digging?

Spannerman has elements of space panic about it and Don't Panic by Firebird is a definite clone. Sure there's a couple of others but nothing springing to mind at present!
