A cassette magazine published in mid 80s?
« on: 15:51, 14 June 19 »
I have a strong memory of purchasing a cassette based magazine for the CPC464 sometime in the mid 80s. I only ever purchased one issue as I came across it in a newsagent in a different town one day. The cassette was stuck on a piece of rigid cardboard that was glossy and gave the name of the publication and the contents. I think the issue I bought was No.2 or 3. The cassette loaded with a little magazine at first and I think you could then select which program to load from a menu. I recall a simple platform game as one of the programs on the tape.

Does anyone happen to know the name of this UK cassette magazine and whether anyone has managed to create .cdt images of the whole run of issues (however many there were!)

Cheers.

I'm sure Zoe Robinson covered this a few months ago,
have a look thru her posts and you should find it.

Cheers,

Peter

The only cassette magazine for the CPC that I'm familiar with was CPC 464 Computing (later just CPC Computing but totally different to the other CPC Computing that would come later). It was the CPC equivalent of Spectrum Computing, which was produced by the same publisher (Argus Press).

I covered CPC 464 Computing in episode 4 of CPCine: The Amstrad CPC Video Magazine.

CPC 464 Computing magazine was pretty interesting, I have to admit - and it had fairly close ties to Amsoft at the start of its life, which meant it put out information that other magazines at the time just couldn't dream of. It's also how we know which Roland game was developed first, because they had such close ties to Amsoft.

(Roland in the Caves was the first one developed, by the way)

Yep, that's the one! Earlier I downloaded all issues from CPCPower and as tomorrow is Saturday, I shall indulge myself in the morning loading them all in 'real time' using the virtual cassette of my new emulator of choice, Retro Virtual Machine, and looking forward to discovering the issue I bought as a kid many years ago!

I found the issue I had as a kid! It was actually issue 10, that features the seminal classic 'Oscar In A Jam' platform game, which is the main game I remember from the issue! Ha!
You all know that game went on to be the main inspiration for Half-Life don't you?

I haven’t yet reached issue 10 (I’m reading them all in real time, to cover on CPCine) so I’ll look forward to getting to that one.

Glad you’re still enjoying loading from tape. It’s a lost art in many ways. :)
