Hi Everyone,
I have started this topic to ask about the best bargins and rare CPC items people have seen on eBay.
I just saw a Multiface Two, Mouse and Vidi Digitizer sell on eBay for A$380 (about 260 Euros). They also included a lot of extra for pick up only.
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260635791430&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260635791430&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT)
I didn't bid on this one and I don't live near the seller so I would have missed out on all the extras.
Damn these things have started fetching insane prices... I'd never pay that much, but it's a nice bundle overall. Just reading about "130 disks" makes me drool.
PS "bargin"<-australian pronunciation? :D
Actually contains some interesting devices not well documented on the CPCWIKI!

Yup, you'[re right about that. But even if we did a collective effort, it's still over :D
Yep, i know!
Maybe the new owner is CPCWIKI friendly and wants to make some photos/scans of the two devices in question :)

A few years ago I was offered one of the early amstrad GX4000 stands with games included. The one you used to see in the Dixons high street outlets. anyway, my wife told me no way, and we had a bit of an argument. In the end he offered it to someone else. I reckon it'd be worth a fortune today, sniff, sniff :'(

Yes it is the Australian pronunciation, it's not just because I spelt it wrong ;D
yeah, that auction had some cool stuff in it (besides MF2 plus original Insider disk, there was several eproms, VIDI, KDS 8bit printer and power controllers (?), 6128 keyboards)
I had it on my watch list to bid on it as I'm a couple hours drive away from the seller, but about 9 hours before the auction closed, the price jumped from about 95$ to nearly 200$! and kept watching as the high bidder took it to 380$ near the end - for a job lot of CPC stuff, certainly got ppl's interest :)
ah well.. saved my $$ instead for some cheap PS3 AAA titles ;-)
@ukmarkh: I feel for you mate... I really do.
No wife or girlfriend to worry about here, so within reason I am free to have whatever I like! Yeah go on, hate me you know you want to! :D
@archcosmo, you have probably seen there was a lot of CPC books and two Speech Synthesiser (SSA-1) for sale on eBay Australia in the last few months. There doesn't seem to be much on there now though.
I won the auctions for some of the books and one of the Speech Synthesisers. Unfortunately I can't get the Speech Synthesiser to work with my CPC464. I think it is because it takes the audio from the headphone socket and early versions of the 464 didn't have this.
You could always add the headphone socket to the 464, if you can solder?
Bryce.

Bryce.
Do you mean I could solder a headphone socket connected to wires used for the internal speaker?
When the speech sythesiser is plugged into the expansion port the internal speaker is muted, except for the sound of the tape loading. So I don't think adding a headphone socket to the CPC will make it work. :(
I'm hoping to get a 6128 one day so I will try it on that.
No I meant adding a few resistors and the socket to provide a stereo output directly wired to the AY like the later original CPCs have. I wonder how they manage to mute the internal speaker? That wouldn't be possible according to the schematics or hardware I have.
Bryce.

There is a SOUND output on the expansion port, which is the same as the sound that goes into the speaker I think.
Could they force this low to silence the sound?
No that would do the opposite ie: kill the tape sound.
Bryce.
Edit: I just took a closer look, it would probably kill both the tape and internal speaker, will have to check on a real machine (the schematics don't show the internal speaker). It would be still possible to add an un-mute-able stereo output however.

My soldering skills aren't great but if it is simple enough to add the headphone socket I will try it.

The manual for the speech synthesiser says "When the SSA1 is connected the internal loudspeaker of the computer is muted, although the loading of cassette programs may still be heard as normal through the internal loudspeaker."
Hmm, I'll have to open up a real one at the weekend and see how the internal speaker is really connected. The schematics would suggest that muting one, would mute the other.
Do you know what you need for the stereo socket? (4 resistors as far as I can remember)

Yeah, i notiiced that one too and was a little bit surpriced, as £27 is quite low compared to last time a copy was on sale. Of cause £27 is quite high for a amstrad game in general, but there is a few popular games like BAT that always sells for crasy high prices.
Off topic but still crazy: someone just bought a amiga copy of Moonstone for £102:

Thanks for your help and advice.
I also have a 6128 now so I am going to try the Speech Synthesiser on the 6128 too.
Unfortunately the shape of the device was designed for the 464 and it wont fit on the back of the 6128, even if I take it out of the plastic case it is still too wide and the 12v plug is in the way.
I will have to try and make an extension from the expansion port.

Considering I downloaded Wonderboy off NVG and played it on my CPC 6128 I think I've done alright. Best of Elite - I was buying most of the decent Encore stuff about 3 for £5 a bit over a decade ago! ;D Last Duel is a bit Substandard! Anyway's I'm puzzled how this stuff could be going for so much when it's all there on the net as Tape Images, Disk Images, original Disc Images on file. True you get the box and manual. They wouldn't want to sell a copy of Xenon for a mint on Ebay, for me the only thing I found CPC relevant was the Disc and "Amstrad CPC Disc" orange sticker stamped on the front of the box! The Manual was almost useless! :( Couldn't even tell me how to load the game on my CPC! ???
Just noticed a Schneider Europc on sale:

Well it was about £50 when I linked it. There must be serious collectors of this stuff out there somewhere. You'd think 30 year old computers would be selling for peanuts!!
It was at £54 when you posted - but yesterday the bids suddenly jumped from £92 to £200, the £200 bid came in on the 12th?
I'm pretty new to Ebay so could someone explain how an earlier bid like that appears.

As rare as a semi-nude appearance of Sam herself :D
28 Disks for €255 is only €9.10 per disk or €10 per disk including postage. That's actually below the average selling price of an original commercial disk.

I would say the three tools disks (I never seen them before, but I don't really follow uk auctions)
- Cherry paint
- Doddle disc (damned, there is a physical copy tool inside, hope the winner will dump it !)
- Handy man
Other utilities are interesting too, but they are loose disks (not really fun as documentations are really
useful to use tools) :-(
Is good to see new software being unearthed after so many years, definately hope someone will dump them but I guess that end up devaluing their purchase. I think if the likes of the mythical chq came up again it would be good to purchase, dump resell, then the dump released.
I really, really, REALLY never understood that argument. The value is inherent to the physical item, it's not like collectors are going to back away from an ultra-rare item because it has been dumped. Like the recent discussion about that arcade machine that got dumped illegaly somehow. Hoarding the code is just plain stupid.
A dump is for preservation... That will never decrease the physical version. The invert, it can make it popular and increase the resell value.
By the way, I know who have won the auction and it is more the opposite of "TheOppositeOfJesus" ! ;D
This discussion reminds me of the Chase H.Q 2 story and I feel angry again.
Chase H.Q. 2 story?
What happened with that?
A guy bought the cart at a high price.
The game is rare and there is no dump.
So, he uploaded a video on YT and that was it...
That stinks,
It might be his property but still..........

I agree, I'm more of a sharing person, what's the point having some rare item that is locked away for nobody else to see, bit like the art collector who buys a van gough and then hangs it in his house and never lets anyone else enjoy it, much better to hang it in a public gallery for people to enjoy it.

Indeed.
There's multiple reasonably priced GX4000's up for auction at the moment from a french seller:
https://www.ebay.fr/itm/Console-AMSTRAD-GX-4000-Nue-sans-branchements-Non-testee/273962288584 (https://www.ebay.fr/itm/Console-AMSTRAD-GX-4000-Nue-sans-branchements-Non-testee/273962288584)
Untested and without any peripherals or system cart, but I'm happier having my money go to gerard instead of some ebay scalper...

Note that the cheapest one miss one joystick port and its second one is missing most of its pins.
I would only consider this one as a source of spare ASIC ... if it's working.

I agree I think far more than 10000 were made, shame the same probably isn't true of the games
I think is not so rare as the people thinks. When i find two consecutive serial numbers. I can demostrate that more of 70000 where manufactured, not only 10000 as the people think.
These seller have another 464:

Oh certainly. I know I can fix pretty much anything else if the ASIC is okay. And getting *anything* with plus features down here is already a nightmare, it's not like I've got the option of stumbling across one cheaply in a market stall or anything.

Anyway when it arrive i can create a little page in the wiki, with the scaned manual. The list of the games, the compatibility with everdrives, a picture working etc... If its o.k for you.
Well, it's not CPC-related, but perhaps it could fit under the general Amstrad page :)
Not a CPC, not on eBay, and no idea how rare it is. :D
But I thought someone out there might be interested in this:
It's a PCW 8256..

The pcw was sold in eeuu I not sure if in Walmart I remember read it in one of the books of sugar.
I do remember tha AMS wanted to enter the US market, but I didn't know they actually shipped. If you google "PCW USA" you'll find a few stories of people saying "shit, I found this thing! Wow!" from the States, probably indicating a very low count, if true.
Yeah, I have read they buy a small quantity even with alan sugar advertisement that they not should sell well in eeuu because the increment costs.
They not sell good, and they down the price to the normal European price. The pcw sells good then, so they ask Alan sugar more comptures at that price. And sugars tell they these are impossible due to the taxes and cost to eeuu shipment. And they not sell more.
Edit I have found it:
"
Amstrad achieved what appeared to be a breakthrough in March 1986, when it signed a marketing agreement with Sears World Trade, the overseas trading arm of Chicago-based Sears, Roebuck - the world's largest retail chain. Sears was bullish at first, telling the Wall Street Journal that it expected Amstrad to sell more word processors in North America than in Europe. It seemed set to place an initial order for 100,000 of Amstrad's PCW8256 word processors for sale in the U.S."
And they continue explaining over few pages.
"They obtained the marketing rights to our word processor, ordered shiploads and stored them in a warehouse in stacks nearly as high as the Sears Tower in Chicago. Someone forgot to organize the marketing".
Then they tell want sell in eeuu, the pc1512, Sears don't want, and they sell it in Texas thorugt "video" the commodore distributor. Then video was latter buyed by amstrad in 1987. Making a amstrad subsidiary.
And then they go to speak about jose luis domnguez, solavox and the 6128.
https://archive.org/details/Alan_Sugar_The_Amstrad_Story_1990_Century/page/n271
Just for the record, eeuu is the spanish equivalent of USA. Just in case anyone else was asking "What's that?".
Bryce.
Estados Unidos (I guess?) with double letters due to plural. We use similar doubling in Greek some times.
I knew it but the first time I had to do a double take, I thought the keyboard got stuck while typing EU :D
Yeah, I have also found a very interesting article in the New York times around 1987:
https://www.nytimes.com/1987/09/26/business/amstrad-plots-a-us-invasion.html
The company that buy amstrad was called vidco, not video XD.
Ooh nice!
My initial thought is that Durham, NC is a huge university town. Three or four giant Universities within 50km. Could have come along with a student from some foreign land... and stayed in NC. lol
I would normally have grabbed it just to keep it out of a recycling bin, but they don't offer shipping and my other options are a bit beyond my price range.
Funny interface... looks like for Amstrad but don't know what it is

This doesn't come up too often. Custom box art and manual though.

Someone probably burned a ROM and put it in a box...
Nice the cartridge label looks OK but difficult to tell without holding it. The plastic box and artwork is almost definetly home made but looks nice. Wonder how this fits with ebay rules on selling counterfeit items.
Edit doh, it's even says its "custom made". The Enforcer with custom cover box and manual. Very rare game that has not appeared on eBay for a few years now. The game was never sold with a box and only had an A4 piece of paper as a manual as it was third party. Condition is Good. Dispatched with Royal Mail 1st Class Large Letter.[/size]Les Enforcer en boite custom. Tres rare, international shipping.
The cartridge label looks legit to me but then again it cant be too hard to forge a gx4000 label.
What does look odd to me is 30 bids by 6 people on the first day. Shill bids maybe?
35 bids, £124!!
It's surely at the point where it makes financial sense just to make your own?? :-\
Definetly cheaper to buy another game and produce a label . If the cart is genuine maybe people want a virgin cart?
Hmmm something odd has happened with the auction, it shows as unsold and all bids are gone.
Reported?
Probably cancelled by the seller because he received an offer outside eBay...
By the way, peoples are so nerd to be able to pay +100£ for a fake box and manual. :-\

This is from allegro, aka Polish ebay. Tricked out GX4000 (made by one of this forum's members, I believe).
It's got 128kb RAM, PS2 keyboard interface, Parados cartridge and .dsk reader. Quite an interesting project. I must admit that it's very tempting. I made a bid, but it's already ~200 pounds and will probably go higher than that. For that kind of money I could get another 6128, mayeb even with colour monitor, so I will probably pass...
....the high bid got withdrawn and I ended up buying it. What a bizarre setup! It's also very ugly :) But I love it too, especially being able to use a PS2 keyboard is amazing.
Meanwhile, I've found another crazy auction. 10,000 pounds for a roomful of Amstrad gear (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Amstrad-Collection-Vortex-SP512-JUST-CPC-v2-Amstrad-664-Amstrad-Plus-GX4000-etc/183873794165?hash=item2acfbb7075:g:JoYAAOSwaV1dgpp7).
That's is old action, but it very strange view the description:
Men's analogue watch, limited edition 1991-1992 (commemoration of the release of the Amstrad CPC 6128 plus).
-----
Index: golden appliquéd bars/drops, minutes/seconds and day display at 12 o'clock, date display at 6 o'clock. 1991-1992 display at 9 o'clock (commemoration of the release of the Amstrad CPC 6128 plus).
What?.
https://www.catawiki.es/l/13319655-amstrad-commemorative-men-s-watch-anq1048-1992
That is soooo fake it makes fakes look real. The Amstrad text is a different font, colour, not centred or aligned and the watch doesn't have any other Amstrad logo or indication and has a style that was unlikely available at the time. I think I'll sell me collectors editions iPad that came out to commorate the 6128.

There's a crack in the external packaging! That's got to drop the price to at least €1249! :D
Bryce.
The nerd though it was Chase H.Q. 2 ? :-\
How rare is this?

But will it ever work!?
I like the fact that the developer preferred the classic tall key CPC keyboard ;)
I think the motherboard is a CPC6128+...

"Should work"... A pretty confident statement for such a rusted machine. But it could be restorable.
Bryce.
I view two interesting thinks. The dma patch ic is paste near de fdc with silicone.
It not have the separation of plus pcb with the lk6 that permit disconnect the ic and connect the signal directly to the asic.
That nobody have try ever.
It appear that the ic it's add on the "fly",there is not tracks in the motherboard.. It paste with silicone and add to signal boards manually by wires..
That confirm amstrad don't aware about asic bug until the first batch of prototype boards was built.
And the rgb ic appears some type of prototype maybe some cpld or something else, but no the oficial amstrad ic all we have.
Hi Dragon
So you are saying that the UBI-Soft no 5 is sort of a prototype(or very early CPC+) handed out to the UBI-soft developers before the official release?

Yes, exactly a early prototype with the patch unfinished and the dac part video out unfinished In the pcb.
And I think with lk5 activated autoboot cp/m. (picture is not very well).
That is another thing bugged in the cartridge.. So I can asumme the system cartridge they used was some prototype without the bug.
It also have z90901 that is from the early numeration system where all comercial plus range uses the new numeration system so is from 89/88.
And the asic is a prototype. It not use the amstrad printing... It used the manufacturer identification model chip.... Thosiba maybe.
That went for super cheap!
Hi Gunhed
What do you mean!?? Is £185 cheap :o ? I like the keyboard though, the classic 464 kb has always been my favorite! ;)

Wow, it went for less than a regular 6128 Plus! Have any of these ever turned up before?
I bet we'll see this selling for £1000+ a couple of years down the line. I wish I'd seen this thread earlier!
Who would really want it? Looks like a pile of useless bits to me!
Well, technically nobody know their existence, at operational level they don't should be diference with comercial computers.
The patchs are provisional made manualy with wires. The only diference is that in comercial computers all are integrated in the pcb tracks.
And the asic should be the same, the diference is you can know the exact model that uses amstrad.
Probably amstrad don't have finished the case, the keyboard and the fdd when they should send it. That's the reason they made a Frankenstein. As the 464 only wanted have games from day one.
I probably bid in another date ... but that's unfortunate. I have reserved now the ps5. :(. But because I like these things if are cheap.
People don't care much about plus range. If that should be a 464 prototype they should go to 1000e o more.

Dev-kits are often sought after.. I've seen people chasing after Amiga ones, Playstation, Nintendo among others.. but never seen an example like this for the CPC before

Yeah, give it 7 months.
I saw this book, it is one of the best CP/M programming books for CPC.

Only out of curiosity, what is this version of CPC 464 with the BOS 2.1 SP 512 rom ? https://www.ebay.fr/itm/126002251956
A 512 KB memory extension for CPC 464?
I found these 2 photos on CPC-POWER for a Vortex card.
Quote from: poulette73 on 12:50, 24 September 23A 512 KB memory extension for CPC 464?
yes. it can be 64, 128, 256, 320 or 512KB.

More flexible but not compatible with the 6128s PAL or the dk'tronics de facto standard.
It's a bit of a collectors item but the 380€ is WAY off.
Ok thanks for all this info. 👍
Also important, they are very unreliable due to the amount of connections they needed. When they work they are good, but even moving the computer from one desk to another could mean having to open the computer and reseating the connectors before it works again.
Bryce.
Currently Vortex SP-512 for 464, auction in progress : 2,52 €
