To be fair, some of those machines can be hard to find, so hiring one instead of having to trawl eBay or second-hand shops for goodness knows how long can be a definite advantage.

If you are making a film or TV show everything is hired in from prop companies. The props guys can't buy everything in. Although sometimes they do trawl charity shops etc.

But in the main it gets hired in. In ye olden days places like the BBC had massive prop stores of their own and only extra bits were hired in. But those days have gone. Generally speaking every thing is hired, sometimes at very short notice!

So what you're telling us is: we should hire out our collections to nerd programs for maximum profits that can then be used to buy more retro crap? Because I'm all on board for that!

You need a big collection. For example there is a company that offers old TV studio equipment, some of it working! This enables people to use vintage cameras on modern productions such as that recent Inside Number 9, and also the new scenes for the Doctor Who story Shada. https://www.golden-agetv.co.uk/portfolio.php

Some of the kit is reminiscent of the TV cameras in the original "Quatermass and the Pit"

I'll have to wait a while, then. Unless 1600 PS2 games counts?

It doesn't count, does it? Oh well. I'll get there. :)
