Well, speaking of the Dragon, the b/w mode is already 256x192 so it seems fair that they ported the spectrum graphics without attibutes.


The hard work was to convert the code from Z80 to 6809, I guess...  :D

Disappointed at the BBC version especially. The c16 version is quite smooth, but of course it looks shitty (pun intended). It's funny how identical it is to the c64 version, and how they replaced the SID on the c64 with a speccy-on-a-chip :D I guess that's why they had to downgrade the actual Spectrum sound to a symphony of burps.

It works with a 16k expansion. The graphics at times look a bit wonky, but that's due to the limitations of the ZX81 (pseudo-)hires mode. Also, only 11 levels are implemented (so 9 are missing), 16k are not enough for all the levels.
And it is even harder than the original game! :laugh:

That's very impressive considering the limitations of the hardware and its graphical modes (and indeed graphical refresh IIRC is done by the Z80, so you lose loads* of CPU time as well).




* wikipedia says you lose 3/4 of the CPU time, so instead of a 3.25 MHz Z80 you effectively have a 0.8 MHz Z80.  Luckily having a character based display means screen updates are quick - there's even time to animate some characters!  But not enough time to copy the background graphics behind the moving characters to prevent the blanking issue.
