One of the better, if more forgotten, racers on the CPC:

I've downloaded CDT files of the original cassette version from CPC-POWER and tested the game in emulators, and it does not load all the levels in one go on 128K machines.

Bah, only Ocean seemed to care about doing proper 128k loading.

Heh, I clearly remember that I had this one on disc. It was not original, though, a friend from the school lent me a cracked version and I copied it. I always loved it, to be honest. Probably my favorite CPC racer :). This guy had some good games at home, he also lent me P-47 and quite a few other fine titles.

This looks like a fun game. I don't think it would be one I would have been decent at playing back in the day but my goodness, it looks pretty slick on the CPC.

This game was Mariokart before Mariokart was Mariokart! =D

Powerdrift is an amazing game on the CPC, I just wish there was a bit of animation on those tyres [emoji23] I think Activision did this one [emoji848]

Certainly the 16-bit versions were biting off more than they could chew. CPC version is really good, clear graphics, keeps some of the arcade graphical feel, and the textured road works.

Great video.

Not an easy game to port, but the 16 bit versions should of been better.

The CPC played nothing like the arcade game, apart from it being a racing game, but what they did do on the CPC was highly playable.

I think the CPC would have been rated in seconds-per-frame if it had tried to replicate the arcade experience!

But yeah, it's a standard 8-bit race-track algorithm with some ground texturing effects (which work great on the CPC, and terribly on the Spectrum due to colour clash), and the tracks are pretty short too. I think it worked better than the brute blitting fest of the 16-bit versions which simply couldn't recreate the arcade's dedicated hardware.

I remember that ACU used to have an arcade section, and this game was once featured. At the time it amazed me.

Was still the better of the 8bit versions though. Although the C64 version is also nice.
Speccy version used awful colours which didn't help, although it was still nice and fast.

Few arcade converted racers resembled the originals to be fair. You had Chase HQ... and that was about it. But it's unfair to expect that on machines that had about 1/8th of the horse power too.  ;)

I wouldn't say 'nothing like'. It tries to get the spirit of the arcade which the raised sections certainly do replicate as well as all the different characters you are racing against. It's an approximation that tries to capture the spirit of the arcade and does succeed.

Never seems to crop up when people talk about CPC racing games. It's always Chase HQ, Continental Circus and Outrun that get talked about.

I actually think it’s one of the best racers on the CPC, if you stick with it, the challenge is immense. Wec Le Mans remains numero uno for me, but it’s still a great racer.

I think we talk to very different gamers, Chinny.  ;D
Power Drift was considered somewhat of a triumph when it came out, especially amongst arcade fiends (like myself) who thought there'd be no chance in hell it would be another good after abortions like Out Run and Enduro Racer were.

Then we played Power Drift around Christmas 89 and were blown away by it. But even the arcade version set a new standard for driving games, especially the speed and those rollercoaster bends.
