Quote from: arnoldemu on 10:35, 02 April 18Sadly the tv didn't do the demos justice. (it doesn't really do any demos or games justice to be honest)

It is sad that some people like me will see them this way and will not enjoy them exactly as designed :(

This is something I've often thought about too.
I used to always insist on watching all CPC creations on the real machine, to be sure I saw them as their creators intended. So I'd always wait till I had the necessary time to copy DSK, convert to HFE, copy to SD card etc. I thought it was somewhat respectful towards the creators.
But nowadays I must admit I've given up. Simply too much trouble too often. Nowadays I just wait for the YouTube video instead.

What's the reason behind this? I know different CRTC's behave differently. And of course, any LCD TV won't be able to display pretty much any CRTC effect regardless of chip version. But is that the only explanation?

Ok results have cometh...

>> Oldskool graphics :
3rd Place : Smile! by BEB / Vanity

CED / condense 's  Inversio 8102 had 4thplace which is quite honourable.

the 2 "Amiga" entries were helped by the quality and the format specs (yeah Amiga is not a shitty graphic machine indeed) but to be honnest, while the dragon was well done I didn't liked its design.
The Flow of Time by MADE was great art composition and obvious winner...

>> oldskool intro :
1st Place : isometrikum by vanity (cpc)

Well deserved and no contest, by a nice margin according to the votebars during the ceremony.

>> oldskool demo :
2nd place : phX by condense.

Very close second place according to the vote bars. Fairlight has many friends and great SID music and the commodorks always reign supreme.  ;D

onescreen colonies was probably 4th place, a shame as it was mindblowing technically, but too short I guess to really win in this category/compo... the VIC20 demo was a serious contestant and was a full demo, with more contents/sequences which was a help in the competition for this category.

Sadly we dedin't get any double podiums from amstrad, but at last one Winner (oldskool intro, no contest), and classics 2nd or 3rd places.

Prized Amstrads in every categories is still great and to have two groups o actually compete against each others on CPC was a sign of maturity and visibility for the Amstrad demoscene..

Also Vanity proved that Amstrad can actually win in the oldskool intro, which was often a difficult category for CPCs.
Last year's entrie Wunderbar didn't make it (4th place, argh), or best place/prize was 3rd place in 2012.

VANITY and CONDENSE totally rocked this year, well done.

Next year it may be nice to have some Amstrad games or even Amstrad "wild"to compete there as well.
;)

Yes, AMAZING TIME @ Revision 2018 !

That was a personal pleasure to meet some people for the 1st time (they know who they are). Just for that, my trip from Canada was great !  :-*

The Amstrad was particularly well represented this year. I'm personally amazed by the Vanity productions, pretty solid. Those guys never stop pushing the limits..... Respect.

Our Condense demo was also well received, and honestly I feel comfortable with the 2nd place. What to expect when releasing an Amstrad demo in Germany a.k.a. "C64-Land" ?! CensorDesign+Fairlight demo (C64) is good, they deserve their 1st place (given the context).

I booted both demos on my cpc6128 which has a gotek with flash floppy and connected to a tft television via scart cable.

Sadly the tv didn't do the demos justice. (it doesn't really do any demos or games justice to be honest)

* First it showed the leftmost column which cpc monitors hide behind the bevel, so I saw some pixels that the authors didn't intend me to see.
* The pixels in phx were a bit too clean, with less blending of colours  so some of the clever pixel dither was not as nice as it should be. Some dithers it just ruined and were hard to look at.
* And it didn't like the horizontal rupture in the first part of Onescreen Colonies  :'( I saw a black screen until the arkanoid inspired part came on.

So I couldn't watch them completely on a real cpc.

It is sad that some people like me will see them this way and will not enjoy them exactly as designed :(

Thank goodness for good youtube videos.

Same here, My new LCD Benq just show black screen on Isometrikum and One Screen Colonies

Seen on POUËT... that's so typical.

A 10-men prod with the usual C64 recipes.

And the demo wasn't even THAT better.

:(

post Edit : yeah I am an opposite side fanboy as well...
Oh and where was C64 in the intro orgraphic compos ?

robcfg

You can't convince fanboys with words, just keep throwing amazing CPC demos at them!

Targhan

Once again a great party! Though I think the productions were not as good as last year, the CPC productions are absolutely mind-blowing!

I'd like to apologize to the German CPCists who were present, I was so busy coding, wanting to make progress as much as possible, that I didn't find the time to discuss much with some of you. This will be repaired next year(s)!

Or maybe this summer, if some of them wants to come to "RESET MEETING" !!! (Commercial break)

The most stunning french CPC meeting, with low prices, free good food, nice individuals unexpensives sleeping rooms, clean showers, jugglers & bears trainer.... Awesome :)

So, who is up for a proper report ?
Where/when will we see a bit more pictures ?

i updated a few CPCwiki pages but those are stil stubs, feel free to modify as needed.

krusty_benediction

It is not because there are several coders and that effects are not all originals that the work is weak.

I do not understand this trend in the CPC demoscene that is not as objective as it should be.
Yes there are better demos on C64 but releasing something should be considered as a prowess.
By the way, if you apply the same way of judgment to CPC:
- Isometrikum is just an hardware scroller with a sprite routine -  Onescreen Colonies is just an original scroler - phX is mainly a set of line to line spliting screens

Off course I am an even bigger troll.
:P

Concerning Fairlight's demo.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHRwFrVPM7A

To be honnest :
I quite liked the particle effects on the texts at the begining ( 0:25 - 0-33 )
the text zooms just after (with sound effects) are nice too.

the "diagonal" part with overlayed text/sprites (0:50 - 1:15) suffers from the limited palette IMO.

the" horizontal tubular tunnel" as well (1:22 - 1:42) ,  it looked better on CRTC3 from Roudoudou... they failed to introduce some sort of dithering to smoothen the palette.

Following verticall multiscreen graphic screen with effect is nice but the white background and the limited C64 palette looks quite... boring after the colourfull colour explosion from phX. still a great pixel art and effect.

Nice to have a tribute to Hawking (but boring part)

the "liquid splashes" sequences from 2:28 - 2:38 was the msot impressive to me.

the "kefren bars" ? (2:40 - 3:10) suffered comparison with the doubled and coloured ones from the phX demo and were a let-down..

the "balls" scrolltext is not easy to read and the blank grey background also lacks in my opinion. (3:10 - 3:22)

the part at 3:24 - 4:01) is well animated but to have background and some border in the same colours just add to the border issue... I don't like when the objects seems to disapeare into the invisible border, which never happen in the CPC demo (border being the real screen limit). But the "3D" movement is nice, clearly one of this demo's moneyshot and highlight.

4:06 - 4:59 : The "rotating facet balls" are nice concerning animation, c64 is great for those facetted things, but the "invisible border" and limited palette ruins it for me again.
I quite prefer when they start to assume the borders at 4:45 - 4:59, as it gives a richest feeling to the global screen.

Last part : 5:00 - to the end.
A classic huge horizontal scroll screen (very smooth scrolling) with overlayed sprites/text is a classic strenght from C64.
Not bad overall but the palette is a bitboring again and shows limitation IMO.

Transitions are well mastered as usual from those guys.
Music are well mastered SID tune... this pleases the audience at such party but I have to admit I am not that much of a SID fan..

So yeah I feel phX was a bit better but this is not what gives you certain victory anyway, especially as I wasn't there to vote.
;D

ZbyniuR

Anyone know which emulator can run demo "Onescreen Colonies by Vanity" ?

I tried on Caprice32, WinApe and JavaCPC with no success. :(
In STARS, TREK is better than WARS.

roudoudou

works "fine" with Winape and CRTC 1 configuration (not Plus of course...)

que de progrets en tout cas et vraiment une démo un peu over the top qui cherches a en faire trop mais après tout c'est ça qui est bon de s'en prendre plein la cheutron.

I have a question about Isometrikum @beb or @Hicks .How can we shrink a 4k without doing crossdev ? ;)

Thx.
I'll look at it as soon as possible, there should be things to steal in your build system and data generator ! I'll look at your circles routines because I still do not understand why you are limited to 2

I have finally some questions: I think  phX is the very first demo that does not work on a standard 3" disc (today I have no idea if it is "fair" or not):
  - do you plan to release a 3" discs version ?  - did the revision organizers asked you to justify that ?

Do you see the demo hang?
If you do, which part do you see it hang on?
