I tested 2 demos on my C64 with SID6581 and MOS8580 through an ultimate II cartridge.
Really impressive what can do this little machine !

Amazing stuff! I've been thinking of getting a little stereo for my retro room, but apparently I just need a commodore.

Impressive in its own right, but does 44.1 vs 48KHz make such a difference?

Absolutely not  ;D

About C64 and audio replay/compression, you have to hear all the Algotech productions, especially the frodigi :)

I was into hifi once and there was all the rage about high bitrate stuff with huge resolutions above cd quality and resulting massive increase in storage retirements, from what i recall the improvements were tangible at best and probably all in the mind of the person spending big dollar.  considering people seems to still like analogue audio and even cassette cd quality is still great

@roudoudou : nice, but it still sounds like a Walkman is drowning in the toilet bowl :D

@tjonhson : yeah, I seem to agree. Every time I encode something I'm tempted to go all the way to 48KHz, but each time I wonder if I hear any difference.

Cool for the C64, but on CPC we had 128 Kbps MP3 already at 2004. And we had stereo ;-)

In software?!

In the article they write that the c64 needs a ROM cartridge. So, it's hardware and software.

I'd argue that the ROM cartridge is merely the delivery mechanism for the software... The player itself is all done in software.
