There's a fashion for extreme refurbs at the moment. Thing is, often it would be better to salvage the chips and other bits than try and get it working on its own. But you know, it all makes Youtube Ad revenue doesn't it?

Haha Pete doesn't have a monetized YouTube, and I was only monetized 14 days ago (6 months after launching) so he definitely didn't do the 3 week refurb for the $1 YouTube pay for every 2,000 views. I cover this on my channel just because Pete's a friend and he reached out to me unprompted 4 months ago to ask if I'd turn his projects into videos. With such passion for repairing instead of trashing, how could I say no.

We're both doing it for the love of these machines, not for the 75¢ I've earned in return for the 3 days this video took me to create.

I think the truth is that we're seeking to "restore" our childhood, to bring the nostalgia back to gleaming life, to revisit better days.

Thanks for your interest and I hope if nothing more, you enjoyed the video and found it satisfying.

All credit to Pete.

That is an amazing job!

The 800XL is very special for me as it was my first computer.

I specially liked how the case was reconstructed, the procedure and materials would come in handy for repairing many damaged machines.

Hats off to Pete!

I see a new eBay trend coming.

Instead of putting "For spare parts only" on old miserably broken machines, the auction will now read "For extreme refurb project"  :)

I don't know where people find the patience for projects like this, but it's awesome that some have it. I know from my local "retro-group" of people who meets up every now and then, that certain old childhood machines has received weeks of refurb - because nothing beats having the actual machine that you had as a kid.
It's never been that bad as in this video though.

Well done!

Even if it was a video to attract visitors, there are some good hints there. I have an Atari 1200XL which lacks of the metal plate on the top cover -and I have been looking for an original replacement for it, not considering that I could re-create it. So thanks for the link!

I have my own extreme refurbishing, by the way xD

I had to replace the 7805, the socket of the 6502 and some capacitors, diodes and resistors.

We suspect it was stacked under piles of junk for thirty years.
