Used Video-Digitizers for PcW and CPC, both with VHS tapes successfully.

Still use my vhs, tape decks, reel to reel.
I even used vhs to backup my Amiga HDD.

I bought a laserdisc player after moving to Japan a few years ago... I have to say, there's something really 'magical' about the whole LD experience, the high quality packaging... the huge shiny disk... even swapping the disks half way through the movie is kind of 'exciting'

Dropping a 40gb TS file onto VLC just doesn't compare!

In Japan there are some DVD box sets still in large 'LD size' boxes - I can see why... I can't help feeling Blu ray would do better if they went back to large packaging for the collectors

TBH I don't normally interact with any of those either, at least in a non-retro context. Never been into vinyl and nowadays optical media just takes up space. You'd be migrating files all the time. I still remember (S)VCDs, then DVDs, suddenly you had to buy everything again on BluRay and now there's 4K...


No local spinning rust data storage either and while I do have SSDs I'd call the physical experience a tad underwhelming. Even when it comes to moving data I prefer git, air drop or cloud based services. Heck, even my old Acorn uses FTP!


Curiously enough the only exception are books. I've literally got hundreds of them and can't imagine reading anything other than say technical manuals in digital form.

My entire collection of Datasheets and schematics (for over 200 retro devices) are all in PDF on an ebook reader. That way I can always have my references with me at the bench. Just the datasheets in paper form would fill my entire electronics room.

I'm still using VHS to record TV programmes, obviously through a Digital HD Set-Top-box which are becoming a harder item to find instores after my last one stopped working.
One good thing about them is you can record and know that somebody else with VCR can watch on their telly, with Hard Disks some TVs record in a format that can be read on other Tellys, but others don't, Set-top Boxes can also be the same.

One day (which means from my POV very soon!) the sun will spit out some happy looking particle flare and with it comes an not so friendly EMP. After that day all you have is stuff like vinyl and maybe some magnetic band (of course not the outer layers). All that digitally saved stuff will be just gone.
Since the 6128 is shielded it will be the only surviving computer.

There was an "Atari Video Cartridge" which encoded games on a VHS tape.

VBA, video backup system. Still have it for the Amiga.
Can't remember the C64 one.
