My aunty had a C64. I never knew what people meant when they said "Commodore 64 is the only computer with a disk drive slower than tape loading..." until I saw it load a game from the disk drive. I don't know what made it so slow... but it took forever. Was the information on the disk stored in analogue signal or something?

I never heard anyone say anything negative about the C64. In fact, everyone seemed to praise it as "the best".
Of course, I didn't know at the time that this was because these people didn't have any experience with any other computer. I assumed they knew all about the CPC, so I thought the C64 was really a superior machine.
You can imagine how puzzled I was when I then got to sit down with a C64 for the first time, trying hard to find this greatness this machine was supposed to have, while comparing with the CPC. The disk loading time in particular was a big challenge yes. I honestly thought it took extra long to load
because it was a superior machine, and thus needed to load a lot more, like e.g. stunning graphics or awesome music.
So you can probably also imagine my disappointment when the game was finally done loading, and it didn't look better than the CPC version at all. :)

The disk drive itself was as fast as the the CPC Drive, but the CPC transfers the data to the CPC in parallel, whereas the Commodore was hobbled by the IEC bus which is a particularly slow serial bus, so every byte would take at least 8 times longer.

The C64 disc drive was something of a beast. It actually has it's own 6502 CPU running a custom OS and communicates with the C64 over a serial link, so in theory it can transfer data at a very high rate (and you could even off-load calculations to it if you wanted). The problem was that it needed to be compatible with older Commodore models (the VIC-20 I think?) which had buggy serial transfer code and couldn't cope with transfers above a fairly low speed. As a result the disk drive therefore was basically crippled to run at roughly tape drive speeds.
There was a whole market in turbo loader software which could be installed onto the drive to run the transfer at full speed, turning it into something which resembles a half decent disk system. :laugh:

The C64 + floppy hardware tandem was the first home parallel / multi-core computer :-) People used the two 6502 in parallel to compute apple man pictures and similar :)

It really depends, the system are quite different. I decided to get CPC 464 in 1985 mainly because of the monitor, the great BASIC, 80 colums, an overall more professional look and feel, the possibility to run CP/M. I was more into programming and applications.
For games, I think most people would agree that the C64 is indeed superior. Sprites being the biggest advantage of course, and then the SID sound chip. An awesome piece of hardware - a real synthesizer in a home computer.
Talking about SID - here is an idea for another CPC hardware extension / add on for LambdaSpeak - would people care for the SID emulator?

I play games on both, they both have their strengths and weaknesses tbh. For me personally, the Amstrad will always win out. I was never bothered by scrolling, so the vibrant colours will always win out for me. :)

Depends on the games also of course. Nothing comes close to Soccery and Fruity Frank ;) But then, Encounter on the C64 is also amazing. And Ghostbusters was nothing but a huge disappointment on the CPC. Same for other fast action game that require scrolling and smooth sprite action. But my favorite games are on the CPC.

Reading this....debate.... I realize something.
My better half actually comes from "the enemy camp", i.e. the C64.
We've held a few retrogaming evenings just the two of us, but also some on larger groups.
And I realize, that we always only play our own games. Meaning, I only play my CPC games, and she only plays her C64 games.
This just dawned upon me just now.
I think it matters a lot what you grew up with....
But I think I'm gonna have to play her C64 games next time, and she gotta play my CPC games. :)

And the dodgy colours were another hardware mess up. In NTSC the C64 actually looked quite colourful, but then they crowbared a PAL version from the NTSC version and things went wrong.

I used to have to set my VHS player to PAL-60 to convert US tapes. Skin tones used to be a lovely shade of pink that way! :)
