I'm actually surprised at how much slowdown it seems to suffer based on the YouTube clip. I don't knwo if it's just the audio, or whether that some side effect of trying to dynamically mimic the NES hardare rather than just rewrite all the tunes as standard SID music, but it seems to cause a lot of issues. I wouldn't have thought the original game would be particularly taxing for the '64 in the most part.

Tested on various C64 it slowdown a little, but on Turbo Chameleon 64 (with active Turbo mode) it plays well.
The problem is the difference in Mhz between C64 and NES.

I wonder if it is possible to do better on a CPC 464.

I don't recall seeing a c64 game ever slowing down like this. Given a similar game like Mayhem in Monsterland doesn't and it has other effects going on it is surprising to see. As Andy says it must be the way they're emulating the NES hardware rather than natively doing stuff.

And to the shock of almost no one, Nintendo has issued a DMCA takedown notice. I'm sure there are still mirrors where the game can be downloaded, but I managed to grab it before Nintendo issued their legal threats!

Apparently the programmer (ZeroPaige) spent seven years working on the game. Seven years - and inevitably, it took less than seven days (I think) for Nintendo to act. Why would anyone want to spend such a huge length of time and effort on something like this, given how notoriously litigious Nintendo are about their IP? :picard: Would @cngsoft have spent years on his CPC version of Bubble Bobble if he knew or suspected that Taito (or whoever owns the IP for Bubble Bobble now) would issue a takedown notice so quickly?

Seven seconds after having the idea to do the port, he known the issue.
That not avoid peoples to find it and allow Nintendo to not fail to protect its license.

Yeah agreed.. if the programmer didn't know Nintendo are going to go after people who piggyback their IP, then they must have no idea what's going on in retrogaming.
As this game apparently had the same bugs as the original as well as gameplay, it seems that it wasn't just the name and sprites, but the entire game code that were recompiled - so it was an obvious target... it's not even like 'No MarioSky' where they renamed it and redid the sprites to get around the takedown... in this case with out the Ninty IP there's no game left... probably just a skeleton of an NES emulator.

If they had made "Superb Mary Sisters" which was a bit similar but new content then I'd be angry about the takedown, but in this case it was pretty much inevitable

Thats the choice, make your own game - risk it being ignored... use a famous IP you don't own... risk getting taken down

Big companies can do these kind of things because we let them.

Should people stop buying their stuff for a month, and you'll see them being more reasonable.

But I guess you cannot tell addicts to stop taking their dose for that much time...

That said, I still like Nintendo for being interested in making fun and innovative products, rather than just flexing the technology muscle.

That's my 2 cents.

It's a very niche bit of software for an already niche market. The guy got his 15 minutes of fame (and probably more coverage than he ever imagined), the game will live on and remain distributed through a myriad of channels (if Nintendo can't stop distribution of ROMs of their own carts, will they really stop every C64 distribution?)

If the guy behind it didn't anticipate this response, I'd be surprised. But it isn't really going to have a substantial impact on how many people will play his version.
