Arkostracker related problems saving files
« on: 16:58, 12 March 16 »
Hi,

I was pointed to this board via #cpc. I'm currently doing my first tracks on the cpc and ran into two problems.

#1: I let the player.asm file be assembled with my song and the linked, stable player. All runs smooth. So I save the file in the basic promt via

Code: [Select]
SAVE"PLAYER",b,&1000,&40E9-&1000,&1000

The &40E9 is just some placeholder I did with a second testfile. Everything get's written to disk and it stays there. But when I reset the emulator or close and open it up again, the program won't play the tune. Just the flickering screen, but no sound.

#2: Might be a dumb question but I'm more musician than coder. :) How can I disable the looping of the song? I'm preparing one as an entry for Revision and looping isn't allowed there.

Any help is appreciated, since I want to show some love for the CPC.

About the looping, just put an empty pattern at the end and loop that one.

Welcome bod! It's always nice to see musicians on the CPC! ^_^

I've written a very BASIC ArkosTracker player for you to test.
Instructions;

1. Export the music file to .BIN (address &4000) from ArkosTracker1.0
2. Using WinAPE (or whichever emulator you use) to copy the .BIN file to the ArkosPlayerDisk.dsk (in WinAPE you will have to check the Add/Remove AMSDOS Headers checkbox at the top of the Disc Editor window.
3. Rename the file to MUSIC.BIN (or change the BASIC file to load the file you've just copied).
4. Run the PLAY-AKS.BAS file to hear your tune.

I've included a test file so you can see it works.

Thank you so much! Works like a charm. And the looped pattern at the end did the trick. Didn't know there wasn't an option to play a track only once.

You just saved an entry for "executable oldschool music", sir. :) It's nothing fancy, but at first I didn't want to do anything at all. And now I'm hooked to this tracker.

Also: your player is really size optimized. Loving it. If you're attending the revision be sure to hit me up. I owe you a beer.

You can tell the player to stop when the tune is over without the looped pattern, I just couldn't find the source code I had to do so.
I'll look for it tomorrow when I've got a few minutes if you need it.

No worries. Just release lots and lots of CPC tunes in lots and lots of demo parties! The CPC needs the love! ^_^

Don't thank me, thank Targhan and Grim. All I did was assemble their amazing code.
I was going to attend Revision this year, but finances have prevented me from doing so... I will be at Sundown if you plan to come over for that party!

Sorry, I had no Internet access this week-end, so I could neither reply to this forum nor to the PM you sent me! Fortunately the guys here know the player as well as if they had written it :) .

Don't sweat it. The guys here are doing an awesome job.  :D

Yes, you'll see the finished product. I'm going to hand it in the "executable oldschool music" compo at revision. Don't expect much though. It's a bit rushed and my first try with this system. Hopefully there will be better productions after learning more about the CPC!

I've tried to use Arkostracker but maybe I'm doomed with windows .net because I couldn't make it to work on all the computers I got access to (3 or 4). I've installed the .net framework but each time ArkosTracker is crashing. I've tried it on Seven, XP, in virtualbox etc. Some ideas? Maybe because of windows updates + the net framework?

I'm currently using it on a stock Windows 8.1 machine. Can't speak for Win10 yet, as I'm angsty about my audio framework setup. Runs smooth. So Updates shouldn't be the problem.

@garvalf Sorry for this. Works perfectly here on W7. However, some people had crashes, and found a trick. Something about changing the font default size or something... Make a test, maybe it will work. .Net is a nice framework but when it doesn't work...

If arkos crashes everytime you run it, check the font size you are using on windows. Set it to 100%, run arkos again and after the first succesful start you can change back your font size. It shouldn't crash again.

@Targhan @McKlain @others
Salut, thanks you for the tips, on most of my computers I increase the font size so it's probably the reason it was crashing. I've tried again, and it's better when we go back to the default size. However, after the first run it does create an ini file, but if I go back to my previous 120 dpi font size, then Arkos Tracker will crash again :( On another computer, it started, but I couldn't enter a note or load a song and Arkos froze.
Anyway, now I can use Arkos (I've installed a new virtual machine for that), so I'm quite happy with it :) I enjoyed Starkos, but it's true it's easier with Arkos because of the select, copy n paste and such. Btw, when exporting to YM, the compressed version is not compressed at all, it's the same size as the non interleaved version...

(and sorry for highjacking this thread)
