I have a 6128 and a spare internal 3" drive.  Is there a way to connect it externally as drive B? What kind of cable is needed to create?

Audronic

@vasilisk

In the wiki there is some wiring detail of how to connect a drive 34 Pin to 26 Pin.
The drive has to be modified as per photo to be Drive B.

The LINKS on the Photo is ONLY for the " ME56PB31 " MOTHERBOARD (EME156)

http://www.cpcwiki.eu/index.php/DIY:Floppy_Drives.

** please make sure the Power Voltages are in the correct pins (4pin connector)

Good luck

Thank you for the info.
What do you mean by "correct pins"? I will be using an external power supply.

Audronic

@vasilisk

The 4 Pin connector on the emeXXX is not wired as the industry standard.

The +12 and the +5 are reversed.
Please be careful.

For education purposes, why is this needed?

Audronic

@vasilisk

If you leave the original link connected and add the new one then the drive becomes A AND B ?
we only require it to be Drive B for this project.

Why would that matter when only the Drive B: select goes to the external drive? The drive inside an FD-1 certainly doesn't need this mod.

Bryce.

Audronic

@Bryce

I have made up 2 external test leads to check 3" Drives.
One for Drive Select 1 (A) and an other for Drive select 2 (B)
and if you don't use the link the B Drive does not get selected ?

Ps :- Both Drive Selects are connected on my 6128 ?

Ok, interesting. Must check inside the FD-1 to see if one gets disconnected inside. I'd recommend making the change to the cable rather than modifying the drive. That way any 3in drive could be used and they can be swapped back and forth.

Bryce.

Audronic

All

The leads I have made up :-

I use the Converted (eme156) "B" drive on an old PC to create 3" disks.

vasilisk

If we can make the modification in the cable and not in the drive itself, is preferable.

Audronic

@vasilisk

Make a cable up using the second and fourth photo.

That can be used for a standard drive to be Drive B

vasilisk

Thank you. in the second photo, if i see correctly, the sixth cable goes to the fourth pin. The fourth and the fifth cable where do they go? both in the fifth pin?

Audronic

The Fourth wire is not connected

the Fifth wire goes to slot 5
the Sixth wire goes to slot 4

Good luck.  Ray

vasilisk

What are the differences between the two cables in first picture?

I made the upper cable, and the drive B led is always on and the motor keeps running. Should I made the other cable instead?

Audronic

@vasilisk

For Drive A External

Use the Photo "For %22a%22 Drive"
The one with the twist at Slot 4- 5

The 4th Wire is Not connected.
The 5th Wire goes to slot 5 On the 26 Pin connector
The 6th Wire goes to slot 4 On the 26 Pin connector

Check the other end (34) is wired as per Photo "Other end"
Leave the 2 slots empty and move the last 6 wires over 2 slots towards 34
Check that the Red stripe is near the keyway in the Connector.

If you don't have a 34 connector with key the maybe its upside down ?

Thank you. I want Drive B to be external. Drive A is internal.

Is the cable in the photos made correctly?

Audronic

#23
Photo IMG_20191008_004725.jpg looks a bit Odd
The red stripe should be in the first slot ?
It looks like its in the wrong slot ?
therefore the rest are also incorrect ? ? ?

My reference to Drive A Is that the drive is configured as Drive A (No link change)
