Anybody care for SID4CPC ?
« on: 16:37, 16 March 18 »
Hi,
I was wondering if people would care for a SID Soundchip board for the CPC?
There are a couple of implementations on ATMega basis. Should not be too difficult to built on for the CPC based on what is already there
Just wondering - looking for my next hardware project  :)

I seem to recall vaguely that this topic has already been discussed at some point, and that the general opinion back then was that people wasn't interested, with arguments like "It's a CPC", or something like that.

Too lazy to do a search myself.

I'm a musician myself, and have created many tracks on both the Amstrad CPC and the Amiga. If I were to create a SID track I would look into the C64.
(Of course that will never happen because I will never find the time).

Oh ok, yes I found an old thread by now:
https://www.c64-wiki.de/wiki/SwinSID
and
http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/amstrad-cpc-hardware/cpc-sid/
@Bryce - what is the status of this project?

And then:
http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/amstrad-cpc-hardware/new-amstrad-cpc-sound-board-(aka-sonique-sound-board)-sid-part-(wip)/

None of these projects have been realized?

I know, the SwinSID is not perfect (filters etc.), but still interesting, or?

... so, if not SID, then maybe I'll do a virtual analog "n" channel synth for the CPC (n = between 4 and 6).  That sounds like an interesting idea. Yep, I'll do that instead :)

Status: I made a schematic - Took abuse for even mentioning SID in a CPC Forum :D and then shelved the project.

Could you do a dual AY Board so it could be a stereo Amstrad??? - They have stereo SID's and POKEY's and i just wonder if it would be possible. That would be a project for your energy?

Sounds like a PlayCity http://www.cpcwiki.eu/index.php/PlayCity

I was thinking about the PlayCity too, unless of course he's talking about "an actual stereo", i.e. playing streamed (48 khz) audio like that C64 thing.

I was thinking more along the lines of this but for an Amstrad AY Chip.... So you have two physical AY Chips into one socket on the main PCB and one AY for Left and the other for Right - feeding RCA Jacks fitted to the case. That Playcity looks like it does it differently.

Reading that Playcity more i would like have one of those but the guy who makes/made them is no longer on the forum either so i think i've missed the boat on that one.

That’s what a playcity does.

Yeah, if it is just wiring up 2 AY's, I'd find that a boring project which I wouldn't take on.
Also given as it already exists. I'd rather build a virtual subtractive analog synth for
the CPC, with 6 channels min. That'll be more interesting to me (after all, the sole
purpose of these little projects is to learn something about hardware engineering).

Yes it sounds like it has already been done but i didn't know about the Playcity card and i was only trying to make a suggestion. It sounds like the Analogue synth is a cool project.
Do you think it could sound like a Moog :-[

No, because it won't be an analogue synth, it will be a virtual analog synth, as I said.

Analogue filters would be great, though.

This stuff is way over my paygrade but i'm sure it will sound good even though it's virtual. There are some very talented people on here.

And there are also plenty of designs for inspiration - ie., google for "AVR synthesizer"... not sure how many channels are feasible.
Will see.
