Title: C4CPC 3D printed cartridge
Post by: gerald on 13:08, 16 January 16
After few test, I've finally released the "official" C4CPC cartridge (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/index.php/C4CPC#3D_printed_case) design.
For those willing to modify it, I've included the original sketchup file with the stl one.
For those only willing to print it, I've made it available on :
- Sculpteo.com (http://www.sculpteo.com/fr/gallery/today/?search=c4cpc) : where I've printed all 3 prototypes (32.39/22.67 euro + shipping)
- Shapeways.com (http://shpws.me/Lpeq) : Where I've printed the last prototype  (27.53/20.64 + shipping)

It's also available on All3DP (https://price.all3dp.com/#/56fa406d972d951100952b37?_k=gajxdd) where you have a selection of manufacturer (Sculpteo, Shapeways, i.materialise.

I would recommend Sculpteo for French buyer (the shipping cost will make the overall price cheaper), Shapeways for others, however you may try both and check by yourself.

EDIT : do not forget to select the slow delivery option to get the lowest price. You can also select the cartridge colour.

Do you know which method is used for printing.
I see they are offering very low prices for the 2 first material, but I guess it's FDM (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fused_deposition_modeling). I am not sure the model is suitable for this, mainly the C4CPC logo and the clips.
The Polyamide process is slightly  more expensive than Sculpteo/Shapeways but this one could be SLS (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selective_laser_sintering) as the link I've posted.

Which material did you select ?

I have selected ABS as Lego pieces :D

Well, maybe Lego should be the ABS premium option... But as this is a test, I will see and comment when I have the pieces.  :)

I cannot really help, as I did not print the whole colour set !
The main issue, is that none of the proposed colour match the Plus range.
I can only say that the white is really white, and the black should be a bit darker (a polished finish may help)

Yes it's not easy to choose the right color ! like Gerald said i think the grey is darker than the grey color on the plus, the white is too white or maybe you have a very whitey plus ! (lucky) ... mine is grey light or something..  :'(   the only color and even this one is too shiny is the pink on the amstrad logo..

If you want to experiment, just try to dye it yourself.  ;D
All the coloured ones are made from the white one + dyebath.
The material is just polyamid/nylon
Once you have the right recipe for yellowed plus, just share it

Uhh, isn't that one's quality a bit below the line, compared to Gerald's shared pics? Looking to the engraved C4CPC logo etc...

Guys, what is the best service to order a 3d print online? I asked to some local services in Istanbul and they gave me quotes around 30 Eur. I find this price a bit astronomical. What do you think?

That's clearly a FDM print. SLS is far better.

That's on par with the Shapeways price (with slow process option).

FDM choice was not the best. I'll try another company. This time, the SLS technology :) .

I have long sought among Polish companies, but eventually ordered the case at Shapeways. It came out cheaper, even with shipping :)

I received my Shapeways case today.  It clipped together nicely around the board and fits into the GX4000 cartridge slot perfectly.  The surface finish on the front side has some slight inconsistencies but all in all it does a great job of protecting the board and keeping it dust free, really pleased  :)

At the moment All3DP | All About 3D Printing (http://www.all3dp.com) has a special offer, where you only have to pay 1$ for your first print, if its printing costs are below 30$. You just have to go to the webpage and click "Compare Prices", upload the cartridge STL from the first posting and order it. The model will then be printed by Shapeways, i.materialize or Sculpteo. Maybe this is interesting for some of you who haven't ordered one :-).

I also printed one by myself, but I guess I have to recalibrate my printer and use support material, but I hadn't the time to do that yet.

Nice find,  8) though they require script permissions to an excessive lot of external sites, finally ending up with a NoScript XSS warning when linking to PayPal itself.

Anyway (if hopefully legit, with an eplus cellphone number and all), an unpolished Sculpteo white polyamide SLS (as seemed to look best in Gerald's tests) from the STL of File:C4CPC.zip - CPCWiki (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/index.php/File:C4CPC.zip) (most recent I hope?) is just cents below the Special Offer threshold, which incredibly covers even the additional postage within US$1 (96 Eurocents).  :)

It also draws attention to 3D Printing Service | i.materialise | Home (https://i.materialise.com/) which seems to offer plenty of cheaper options than Sculpteo & Shapeways (several cartridge cases might actually fit in one job).

Have yet to receive order confirmation after the debit was done though.

Yes, this is the latest file.
Regarding the surface quality, on my picture the Sculpteo one has some stripes on it. This comes from the cart orientation during the print : it seems to have been printed vertically, with the lowest depth side facing the powder dispenser axis. The 2 other prints from them did not have this default.
This may happen on any provider if they do not care of the orientation (to fill they printer to the max)
Also, Shapeways and Sculpteo are using the same material provider.

I'd rather like to give them the benefit of doubt and assume they have yet to fine-tune interactions with their plethora of third-party servers involved, possibly running the Special Offer precisely for that reason.
So if they can't process PayPal's confirmations automagically (yet), someone there will have to sift through plenty of orders for "C4CPC_all.stl (Polyamide, Solid, raw, White)" and put these back on track Monday morning.

Thought I'd add reading the above comments that the surface inconsistencies I  mention are orientated diagonally.  If you're looking for a indistinguishable copy of a GX4000 cart in colour and finish, it is a long way off.  If you want a C4CPC housing that protects the board, gives access to the SD, USB etc. and fits the cart slot snugly enough to prevent dust entering the GX4000 through the exposed cart slot it does the job.  Better to mod an existing cart if you want more than that  :D

(@oct the official order confirmation arrived recently , BTW)
Also got one overnight (to my PayPal address rather than the one used for ordering), apparently "least-cost routed" from "Fulfilled by sculpteo" to i.materialise (maybe reconstructed from the payment data, may just not be ideal if one could have ordered right there with their "velvet" specialty or wants to try out a specific fab: 2+ weeks at each suggest they are all operating at full capacity anyway).
So @Gerald I should soon have one from there to compare.

Can't see where they clearly specified that limitation upfront for the majority who haven't designed their own STLs (while cases have to come as some incarnation of Yin&Yang (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yin_and_yang) to "embrace" anything).
Then again, sounds like realigning the halves in the file (so the recipient has to separate them after fabbing), faire un pont et ça ira?  ???

@Gerald, maybe http://meltwerk.com (http://meltwerk.com) ("best price guaranteed" SLS in spite of its name) rejects your file for the same (unspecified) reason, would "building a bridge (to be broken) to their heart" (All3DP.com's campaign logo (http://3d-printing-price.all3dp.com/) after all) do the trick?
One that serves a justifiable technical purpose such as ensuring coherent orientation/size/surface structure (as had been genuine issues in earlier tests) of course (rather than subverting unfortunate constraints of their own contracts with printing services).

After all, none of the orders from this forum seems abusive, but rather about some pretty legitimate trial runs to find the best fab&formula, where prices would otherwise be prohibitive - i.e. just what their promotion seems to try&enable&encourage.

That one would be too expensive, their extra "multiple object file" fee taking it over the $30 limit.

I would not take the risk of adding a bridge (well, at least 2 or 3) without testing it before. It need to be strong enough for the manufaturing and post process, and weak enough for the user to break it without damage.

The attached ZIP contains 2 files, one for each pieces.
Note that  http://meltwerk.com (http://meltwerk.com) recommend at least 7mm depth for then embossing, the one on the cartridge design is only 4mm.

There's no better time coming for that than when SLS is at a dollar incl. shipping... ;D (and you've got an army of testers whose FDMs melted out of proportion)

BTW: The bridge might be one that breaks by rotation (twisting) too. I.e linking & growing the halves a centimeter apart (or much less since the PLA powder will always fall out anyway) in a "TIE fighter (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/TIE_line)" style configuration.

I don't think 3D printing gets cheaper with volume really, because it still takes a long time to make each part and most of what you're paying for is machine time not raw materials. I might be wrong though (more info welcome from someone that knows more). But I think you need something else, maybe someone can suggest something. The only thing that comes to mind is injection moulding, but that costs thousands to create the moulds (and then pennies to create each part) so only makes sense if you're making really huge volumes.

Great job Gerald!  8) <- The Force is strong in this one!  :D
Saving $27.68 on "Solid white polyamide, dyed velvety soft surface Black" @ i.materialise.
After yet another XSS alert, this time All3DP.com even went back to a "paypalsuccess" page saying "Thank you for ordering!" (and then nothing else).
One could also get it polished - or (even dyed) Alumide if electrically insulating all contact points with the board well (metal particles in PLA, so that's probably for other projects though nice; unless conductivity is ruled out).
Title: Re: C4CPC 3D printed cartridge
Post by: Munchausen on 21:29, 02 February 16
Great! I have also ordered one. Unfortunately I had to get a raw white one because i.materialise wouldn't deliver to the UK, and that was the only option from the other producers that was <$30. It is weird because they do normally deliver to the UK. It said "There are no delivery options available please review country and state/region" or something like that.

Not sure Alumide is a good idea, aside electrical isolation, the material is weaker. Sculpteo did not validate the model on this material.

Would be the other option, but it won't need much support: being made from SLS powder, not FDM filament (though heat might still be an issue).

I just expect it's strong enough for manipulation, weak enough so you can break it.
Having the two part beside and connected mean that the breaks will be visible. Here they are inside.

That's what I mean. I could imagine problems with sagging on the top surface.

The model is for SLS printing only.
It will be fully buried in powder during the manufacturing so there will not be any more sagging than if it was two separated pieces.

Yes, I know the SLS process well, there's a massive SLS machine in the office next to me right now (which seems to print more or less 24 hours a day). However, despite being buried in powder, large suspended flat thin surfaces can still sag sometimes if you don't get the settings exactly right.

Hello all,
this is Mathias from All3DP. Please allow, that I post here in your dedicated forum.
Some of you have ordered the C4CPC 3D printed cartridge at our service of All3DP.com (https://3d-printing-price.all3dp.com/).
First: thanks a lot for your trust and for ordering at our service.
Our promotional offer (print for 1$) is serious and we do this to promote our service, which is a new offering.

Those of you who ordered at our service, have noticed, that printing multiple part objects is not accepted by our partnering 3D printing services (Sculpteo, i.materialise) or that cost is just doubled in case of an .stl-file containing two parts (Shapeways). There are true reasons for this policy of our partners, which we understand and respect.

Now we have passed on the "one piece"-stl some of you have ordered, to our partners. I would like to inform you, that the orders are 'on hold' at i.materialise, which means, they are being checked. At Shapeways the order is in the pre-production state.
We should be very glad to deliver to you as promised and will keep you updated.
Thanks!

Hi Mathias, great that you can join the forum and speak to us directly, what a great attitude!

I was wondering, why is it not possible to order one from i.materialise to be delivered to the UK using the offer? Because they normally do offer UK delivery. Is it just because of the extra expense that it is not available in this offer?

Thanks again. BTW I will definitely look at your company first next time I want to get something printed :D

There is a link to directly order the C4CPC shell at All3DP ?
Title: Re: C4CPC 3D printed cartridge
Post by: Mathias on 15:52, 04 February 16
Hello @Munchhausen: You are right. Ordering with i.materialise should work for UK and has already worked in the past.
Have you already ordered? (We have one order for UK here via Shapeways).
If not, you may try it again and be careful when entering the adress. For UK adresses i.materialise asks for the regional county.
However this should not be an issue of extra expenses, because we cover them.

@Toto: As soon as we know, that the orders of the single-object (onepiece) file are well received by our printing partners we will try to give you a direct link. We will give an update here, if that is o.k. with the forum rules.

Hello,
this is Mathias from All3DP again.
To those of you, who have been interested in the C4CPC 3D printed cartridge: The updated model C4CPC_OnePiece.stl is fine for printing. However with the material finish "velvet" at i.materialise there is an issue. Therefore please choose different material finishes in case you want to order.
Thank you!

Thanks for your great reponsiveness and attention to detail!

As discussed in a previous page of this thread C4CPC 3D printed cartridge (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/amstrad-cpc-hardware/c4c4c-3d-printed-cartridge/msg118847/#msg118847), Alumide might also look just great (to match our "computer grey"/beige matte ancient machines), and the way I understand the datasheet https://www.shapeways.com/rrstatic/material_docs/mds-alumide.pdf (https://www.shapeways.com/rrstatic/material_docs/mds-alumide.pdf) (in spite of superscript barely recognisable as such on the GigOhms) and Shapeways Blog - A new 3D printing material: Alumide (https://www.shapeways.com/blog/archives/384-a-new-3d-printing-material-alumide.html) in spite of some metal content does not seem to be electrically conductive (over significant distances - or is it?).

So the remaining question is whether Alumide's mechanical properties would be any obstacle to switching this to Dyed Raw at i.materialise or Solid Polished at sculpteo - what are your thoughts on this?

I've just had a look at what is the velvet fisnish ans I must say :
- It will add up to 2mm to the overall size of the cartridge => will not fit within the slot !  :picard:
- I am not sure the aspect will stay after multiple cartridge manipulation

I guess most of us weren't aware it's supposed to be a post-fab add-on rather than a property of that particular powder.

It would be good to know if Shapeways will accept the model with this issue. If I was them, I would not because you end up with 2 pieces instead of one.
Then a suggestion on the link design so you still can break them, but strong enough for the manufacturing process.

On the 1st post you will find link to Shapeways / scuplteo
For the 1$ offer, you will have to use the file posted on this message : C4CPC 3D printed cartridge (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/amstrad-cpc-hardware/c4c4c-3d-printed-cartridge/msg118840/#msg118840)
And use it on 3D Printing Service Price Comparison | All3DP (https://3d-printing-price.all3dp.com/)

However it may be rejected (see previous post)

I went with the Shapeways one and it's great. Definitely would feel more confident about using it in my 6128+ now it's in the case, it looked to likely to break before so I only tried it in a GX (where gravity is less of an issue!)

Now I need to make space to set my Plus up!

I desperately want one of these, I don't have any space anymore, all of my retro stuff is in storage, so the GX4000 nestled tightly under the telly is a perfect option for me to continue CPC gaming and adventuring. I've followed all the instructions, the £1 thing definitely isn't working, and when you click on the cheapest, which works out at about $12, the site reckons it can take up to 2 or 10 minutes to calculate the price. Then the price shoots up. The other problem is a lot of 'em don't deliver to the UK  :-[  I think it's a con with the pricing structure, be careful...

Sounds better than earlier "wishes" at least. ::)
Fine-tuning their customer(&fab) interactions is what the offer's all about I guess.
You might also try https://www.meltwerk.com (https://www.meltwerk.com) with C4CPC_OnePiece.stl (doesn't get rejected without reasons anymore, unlike earlier in this thread) with the "10€ off" Bar2016 voucher if they allow it for that model.
Inversely to Ford, there "you can get any color as long as it's WHITE (sintered polyamide)".

I've just tried they online quote :

Quote
the minimum order is of GBP 15.00; any smaller order will be increased to the minimum
And add GBP 3 for the VAT.

That's already GBP 18, which is about 23 euro, on par with Shapeways/Sculpteo.
You may just save on shipping to UK.

BTW, they shipping is worst than any other for non UK buyer (GBP 14.4 = 18.4 euro), making the cart cost 41.4 euro for non UK buyer.

As if there wasn't much of the Latest on ebay (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/classifieds/latest-on-ebay/msg118566/#msg118566) thread dedicated to instances of HM's very own Royal Mail ripping off people, well, royally (possibly even referring to Continental Europe as "overseas" with a ditch only slightly wider than the Danube in between, and chunneled at that).

The EU can be blamed for a lot of things (let alone all it tried to pull off until somebody found out and then they'd be backpedalling over yet another scandal), but having rules against Les Belges or anyone else so inclined undercutting the market forces by subsidizing their industry by 1€ shipping through a state-owned postal service, Chinese style, isn't one of them.

In the parliamentary record on accession through 1972, the crocodile's tears over sovereignty shed ever since (as if the UK's hand had been forced, rather than impatient for France to actually let them join at last), are hardly found raised by Learned Lords or as even a minority voice of Common(s') sense.

Back on topic, black polished one-piece C4CPC i.materialised today, through UPS in almost over-generous packaging, très réussi with the logo nicely visible (not that anyone would ever see inside a CPC), with very little sideways motion when clamped shut, and unlike an earlier FDM (that someone might like for a GX4000?) fitting perfectly - though I wonder what "raw" would be, looking at a "polished" surface that turns out anything but even.

They're wielding their standard scarecrow of "We'll leave the EU, unless: postages go down, or Euro against the pound, or any other pet peeve du jour (and then have to beg France on our knees to allow us back in)"  ::) , again, simple as that.
So, French's gotta wait (so does German) on this forum too until they've held their referendum (and stay, if ve & vous want them to). ;D

Might not be the monitor, but maybe also dyschromacy, many men have some sort of it, but often find out only after decades (for a species evolving as hunter-gatherers, variety in human color vision has actually been an evolutionary advantage, as this way at least one in a group of "predators" is always likely to defeat the camouflage of prey that works on the others).
If you come by an ophthalmic optician, might be interesting to ask for the Ishihara plates or Farnsworth test (not the one from Futurama  :D ).

Hi all,
this is Mathias from All3DP.
Earlier in February I was very happy to see members of this forum use our services at All3DP to 3D-print the C4CPC cartridge.
I just would like to pass on the news, that we are running another special promotion: You can print the cartridge in a number of materials for just USD 1.00 within the next few days.
See our related story about this here: https://all3dp.com/3d-printed-cartridges-amstrad-gx4000-games-console/ (https://all3dp.com/3d-printed-cartridges-amstrad-gx4000-games-console/)
In the second line of the story there is a direct link to the preloaded model, which forum member Gerald has designed earlier. The best option so far for printing was polyamide dyed (different colours), raw or polished.

(Make sure you choose the 1.00-$ option, when the promotional offer/banner appears!).

Thanks and all the best!

Are you just getting a blank page?, that's what happened when I tried the link with Internet Explorer, the page came up with Microsoft Edge.

If the page is coming up just press the $1 offer when you see it pop up, then you click on one of the materials you want at the bottom.

You may need longer nails  ;D
I must say that the recess to access the SD should be a bit deeper, but it's a tradeoff beween the accessibility and the shell width.
It's also linked to the precision I have when assembling the socket.

@Gerald: Please keep in mind, that I had problems with the clips and the pcb-holder-pin, too. I've (for me) fixed cartridge-case, using one screw for hoding pcb and 4 screws for holding the 2 case parts together. See here: http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/amstrad-cpc-hardware/after-the-c4cpc-is-there-a-demand-of-'classic'-plus-cartridges/msg161931/#msg161931

The case is basing of your great design but I've put many hours into it for making a case, which is suitable for me and my 3d-printer.

At the moment I'm not @home but I can upload my modified design next week. I do not know, how much the printing-costs are online, but if one or two people are interested in some cases (I do not want to make a big batch out of it) and online is expensive, I can print one (at the moment only black or this white/transparent, see pictures) for lets say 10€ including the 5 screws but excluding postage.

Totally zapped this thread !
I have an excuse, I was in vacation  :D

Yes, I know that the clips are not playing good with FDM printing. The design is initially targeting SLS printing where Vinyl elasticity is used for that.
The recess for the original sticker or the C4CPC logo on the C4CPC case is also a problem for the FDM process.

Title: Re: C4CPC 3D printed cartridge
Post by: Shining on 21:05, 11 August 18
Yes, some design-aspects where not so suitable for FDM-printing but my solution works now, for me. Also I found a printable sticker, which fits the printed cartridge. It's now not like the original but compatible with original pcb...

I've just had some SLS printed shells made up from 3dprintuk (https://www.3dprint-uk.co.uk/).  Half the price of Shapeways and they've turned out well.  A bit of grey spray paint added to prevent the inevitable yellowing.

It would at least requires a change in the closing mechanism. Clips will surely not survive.
And since it's a process that remove material, there is no reason for thin walls where not needed.
But that would be cool indeed  :)

New version of the original cartridge shell, proof printed this time  ;D
Zip file contains stl file and freeCad file

Can someone point me the best place to make the shell using this file either directly in Paris or by mail order ?

I have a new toy to test, but I prefer to protect it first.

Hi!

I have a 3D printed case for my C4CPC, thanks to Gerald's design, but I don't know the exact size of the 4 screws needed to close the case. I've been looking online for this information without success.

Could somebody tell me the name/size of the 4 screws needed for the C4CPC case? Thanks a lot!

Update: somebody told me the measurements.Four screws M2 of 12mm. Thanks

Hi just got a C4CPC look forward to trying out all the games.
I don't suppose there is anyone in the UK can sort me out with a printed cart for a good price?
Thanks.

Well you know what they say, give a man a fish and he eats for a day, teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime, but that doesn't help getting a cart for a c4cpc. So sometimes the guy just has to spend £61 on a 3D printer and make it himself.

Unfortunatly the clips all snapped off when trying to put it together and the pin struggled to fit in the hole, so had to widen it a bit, also the dipswitch block was not 100% flat against the pcb, so maybe that didn't help, but it does hold together pretty well even with all the previous said, and it's gonna spend 99% of it's life inside a GX4000 so it's fit for the job.

Can see why people went for the screw version instead, but this looked prettier.

Doesn't look bad for homemade and nice coloured plastic!

It's the reel that came with the printer, but yeah is fitting, was thinking I could spray it white, leaving red highlights, but thought better of it.

You know you've ran out of things to do over the Christmas break, when you spend the entire day making a wooden cartridge case for your C4CPC...Is this a first? And yes, I know, I still have to drill the holes for the LEDs (and varnish it).

This looks really great!! Some fine filing and varnish and it's a piece of art! (Well almost)

A lot of filing, some work with a lighter (removes the fine splitters) and a few coats of varnish. This is just attempt number one though. My final goal is to make one in dark Teak wood or walnut (because I really am a bit mad).

Why stop there, all family heirlooms should have some semi previous stones embedded 😄

Believe it or not, I've actually started the laptop project again. Unfortunately, I've spotted a serious mistake I made and I'm not sure I can resolve it. I may need a different laptop case.

Ok, consider this finished. Three rounds of sanding and varnishing. If I continue there'll be no wood left. Haven't had this much wrist action since I was a single student! The first wooden C4CPC cartridge case! And who said it wooden work  :picard: ...

Dear Bryce,

You will recall in my email to you of 7th March that the MINIMUM length for the carving must be 10 inches along the longest length. I quote for the instructions:

1. The carving can be any size you choose but must be a MINIMUM of 10 inches along the longest length. Obviously you will need to take into consideration the weight of the carving so that the shipping cost is not to great for you, however, remember that we will of course reimburse your shipping costs in full on receipt of the artwork. As an example to you, the normal LENGTH of this particular carving along the longest length is 14 inches. You may make your bigger or smaller but no bigger than 20 inches along the longest length.

When the carving arrived there seemed to be a small amount of damage, however this is not the problem. During the shipping process something must have happened to the wood (perhaps the temperature changes?) because when the carving arrived and I inspected it, the length of the carving is very small, at only five inches along the longest length. This is half the minimum site as stated to you on 7th March.

The strange thing is that the box you shipped the carving in seems to be much bigger than the carving inside, which leads me to think that there has been some kind of shrinkage due to either the temperature changes or a combination of this and the type of week used.

I will of course be most happy to supply you with photographs of the carving to show you exactly what I mean.

I do not know if the board members will be prepared to accept this however I cannot tell you for certain now until Monday morning (we do not work over the weekends obviously).

Please let me know if you need any photographs and also let me know if you have some explanation for what may have happened.

Sincerely,

@remax (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=314): Excellent, but most people here will have no idea what you're talking about :D

Oh, and last night I realised I'd made one of the notches in the side too small and started filing all over again  :picard:

Hi,
I'm looking for a company who may be able to produce these in the UK, anyone had any success?

Are you looking for mass production, or do you just need one or two for yourself?
