Title: CPC 6128 disk drive problem
Post by: seanb on 11:46, 30 September 14
Hi.
Long time lurker here.
I bought a 6128 and replaced the drive belt as the machines had snapped.
The problem now is that when i try to load a game the drive spins but i get a "bad command" error.
There's no reading sounds.
It has the eme 156 drive.
Does anyone have any ideas please.

Thanks for reading

Drive spin speed perhaps? If you 'cat' a disc does the head move backwards and forwards a cross the disc?

How would i see the head moving?
The case is off so i can see the drive in use

It's the bit that moves forwards and backwards over the disc surface.
When you insert a disc you should see the disc surface revealed.

Also is the disc actually turning?

Perhaps the 12v is not connected correctly when it should be?

The disk itself does spin
The head isnt moving forwards or backwards.

You said you changed the belt, are all the connectors re-attached?

What could i do about that?

The old belt had, what looked liked, melted to the capstan. Maybe i hadn't cleaned it properly.
I'll go over it again with isopropyl alcohol.
Is there anything else i could do?

Ouch... When you say the disc spins slowly, How slowly? can is the hud stiff without a disc in the drive or is the motor faily easily turnable through the new belt?

It feels like it turns fairly easily.
I don't know what the hud is though

There is a little pin that usually falls out, could it be trapped in the mechanism and jamming it?

Ahem ... Hub - Damn predictive texting!

Oh I'm the victim of predictive text on an almost daily basis :)
I'll see if the pun is blocking it

I'll see what a hub is and check.

Thanks for the ideas everyone

FIXED IT!
The rotating arm in the motor that moved the head was stuck due to not being used by its previous owners. Rotated it by hand a few times and it works

I'm so happy.
Let's hope when my 6128+ arrives i don't have the same issue :D

On a bummer though my copy of robocop seems to have had the games data replaced with random text.
I might've done that myself when i was a child

great news. Random text? Robocop uses, I believe, crazy copy protection. Perhaps this is your random text, perhaps a screenshot will help.

I'll start a new thread in the games section as it's more apt.

Thanks for everyone who helped. It was your suggestions that lead to me figuring it out.

Hmmm, Looks like you might have "accidentally" overwritten that disc. My original Robocop 3" has the following directory. If you have no way of remastering it then I am more than happy to do this for you, PM me if you want this and I'll give you my address to post the disc to and I'll duplicate it from my original for you (Or the trainer version from NVG if you prefer)
