Essentially under each key are 3 plastic "support" or pieces. When the key is pressed the spring hits this and bends.
The bending part then makes contact with the membrane.

Different to cpc6128 keyboard construction.

This part clips over membrane.

To clean:

Remove keyboard and detach from motherboard.
Turn it over.
Gently click each plastic tab until the top plastic key part releases from the metal part.
Now, vacuum clean or brush off fluff on plastic key part.
Put membrane flat against metal part and clean (using some spit or some mild detergent) in a gentle left-to-right action cleaning away dust and dirt.
Clean both sides this way.

To put back together.
Turn plastic key part upside down.
Lay membrane over it so that the plastic guide pieces fit into the holes in the membrane
put metal piece over the top gently and when happy it is all in position gently clip back in.
Job done.

What is IC4 (by the Z80A) for on the 464+ screenshot?

Hi Briggsy,
         The 464+ and 6128+ used the same PCB. On a 6128+ IC4 is the µPD765 (Disc Controller) and would be soldered in this location.

I've seen this before - is this the original space bar? Why would they use a different kind of plastic?

well I've not changed the space bar.

The computer was in the attic and got some dust on it, so really I could do with cleaning it up a bit more.

Any suggestions, maybe some kind of solvent would help clean it up better?

The space bar looks like the space bar of the german 664.

I've seen such colour differences before; I do think Amstrad used different kinds of plastic...
