DD1/FD1

Would I be right in thinking that the DD1 and FD1 are the same drive, the only difference being the interface that's needed only on the 464 ?


I've picked up a DD1 and want to use it as an external drive on a 6128 with an HXC installed as the main drive. Would I be correct in presuming that it's perfectly possible (before I go and move half the old computers around in my office and get the 2nd 6128 out). My current 6128 set up gets swapped between the original drive and an HXC as required.

The DDI-1 (DDI = Disk Drive Interface) is the interface that connects to the back of the 464 to expand it to have a 765 disk controller and AMSDOS ROM and looks like this: http://www.cpcwiki.eu/index.php/File:DDI-1_Tomdalby.jpg . The FD-1 (FD = Floppy Disk) is the actual disk drive unit ( this one: http://www.cpcwiki.eu/index.php/File:Fd-1.jpg ), which works with the DDI-1 and with the correct cable can also be connected to a 6128 as a second drive. I assume it's actually an FD-1 that you've bought and not a DDI-1.

I think that yes, you can use the drive from the DDI-1 set as a secondary drive and your HxC as primary drive. But is the internal drive not working?

Ah, in that case I purchased an DDI-1 with an FD-1    Seems I was confusing my terminology, probably because the front of the manual shows a disc drive but calls it a DDI-1 


The internal drive is working, but I want to install the HXC properly in the machine (mount the LCD, buttons etc etc) and use it permanently like this. However, I'd like to have the option of using a real drive too - hence the external FD-1.


I know I can leave the setup I have currently as it is and it performs in the same way (if I use an ABBA switch), but I'm in the process of setting up all my (old) machines with HXCs, and I want the 6128 to be the same.

Con permiso ...... refloto el hilo , he conseguido una unidad dd1 , y me gustaría conectarla a través de una ddi5 , el cable ha de ser de 34 pines....... pero..... ¿hay algun cable que tenga invertir?

So weit ich weiß ist das Vertauschen nur beim PC's üblich. Am guten CPC aber nicht nötig. Im schlimmsten Fall schließt man es seitenverkehrt an, dann schnell ausschalten und richtig anschließen.

Bueno pues he conseguido conectar el ddi-5 a la fd1 con un cable ide 34 PIN y el pin 10 cortado como he visto en un tutorial para ddi-3

El problema está en que cuando seleccionó o mejor dicho cuando tengo la fd1 encendida esta si consigo que lea sola pero cuando voy a seleccionar la otra unidad en este caso el USB lee los dos a la vez ......

Y a partir de aquí ya me pierdo si tengo que cortar algún cable más de cable IDE o por el contrario utilizar jumpers

The DDI-1 is the combo external disc drive coming with the expansion interface to be connected to the CPC 464 (not just the interface). That is printed under the disc drive enclosure (not the interface itself). The FD-1 is the external disc drive to be connected to the CPC 664/6128. That is printed under the disc drive enclosure too.

The expansion interface come with its own unremovable ribbon cable and is powered by the disc drive through it, not by the expansion port. While the FD-1 can be used with a standard ribbon cable to be connected to the dedicated floppy disc port.

That is why it is mendatory to unconnect the internal power bridge inside the DDI-1 "disc drive" if you use it along with a PC, to not cause serious damages. (and the reason people mixing a FD-1 through the DDI-1 "interface" do not see the AMSDOS ROM)

I strongly encourage in any case to check inside whether or not the power bridge exists for some reason.
