Also, thanks for the Blairwitch Project X: the CPC  video.

Just had a look at the video you posted, I once had a cassette deck that did something similar, turned out to be the pinch roller. It had for some reason become more of cam shape, this was on a midi hifi I had hooked up to my 6128 years ago for tape loading, fortunately it had two cassette decks so I switched to using the remaining working one. Guess that's not an option on the 464  ::)

Badstarr, were your symptoms alleviated when you put it upright? It doesn't make much sense...

As it was a midi hifi I wasn't able to really change its position though its unlikely I would have thought to do so. I can't remember what caused the damage to the pinch roller but I think it may have been jammed by a rolled up piece of paper I had wedged into the record enable hole on a cassette that had come loose. By watching the mechanism working with the cassette door open I could see the roller was rotating in an odd way. It was a twin cassette deck, the damaged one being the only one with a record head, so i got wobbly sounding recordings.

Extrapolating a theory from that experience I wonder if the pinch roller may be slightly dirty or not quite fully engaged and moving the cassette deck into a vertical position allows the tape to travel more smoothly. I suppose if the CPC had been stored for a long time with the play button engaged it could cause the rubber on the pinch roller to become damaged.

I still suspect its more likely to be a worn belt though!
