That's material (sustancia poliéster), the other type is made of rigid Plexiglas (Plástico Rígido).

Interesting, I've often noticed all the stuff they make in the cosplaying scene but never wondered what materials they use. Nice.

I really wonder how was the situation in Germany 30 years ago that they found it feasible (or had enough motivation somehow) to produce such a luxurious and beautiful case for a computer that only sold around 10k globally in total.

Probably because it made the case in the beginning of life computer. When a new model computer  is annonced, and the predecesor model sells very well. You no wait six months to release a dust cover, you release it day one. Without know the future life of the computer.
