Hi all,
I am definetely not familiar with tapes, as I owned a 6128, and i have no knowledge about basic things. I am thinking of starting dealing a bit with tapes now.
I think i know the standard way of running a tape. But I have a few questions of saving.
Is it possible (I think yes) to have many files on tape? Lets talk about BASIC files only.
If yes, I save the first game, and then let some seconds of quiet and then save the next one?
And how will that affect the loading? I will have to rewind the tape at the beginning, even if i want to run the second in order game?
Another question is if we can use both sides of the tape, if we can use old simple audio tapes of 60 and 90 min (some are written with songs, but I have plenty of them) and how much kilobytes approximately can fit in a 30 min side.

I read in another thread that I can use any tape for loading only, and that I need MIC for recording.

Thank you!

If you want to make a "mix tape" compilation, you can use single file games or multi but in the right order. (bas, scr, bin etc)
Leave a 5-10 secs silence between games.
You must also write down the track numbers of every game next to the name.

080 Rick

The trick now is to count with the tape you're gonna play cause most of them count differently.

No no.

If you copy from disc, you use JLcopy or Discology.
You start by copying the first file as is.

Later on the CPC, you reset the counter of its internal tape or the external if u have one of these.

Then you write on the cassette label that.

000 etc just to know where to rewind for the specific game.

Oh, thx, now I understand better. So, using discology and have to know where each program is written.
Seems a bit harsh, but thats why disks were invented!  ;D

On a standard Amstrad CPC . . .Yes, you can save several programs on a tape.
Yes, you can use both sides of a tape.
As has already been said it is best to leave some space between each program.
load"" or run"" will load or run the NEXT program (it will start when it finds the first block of a program)
load"prg1" or run"prg1" will load or run THAT program, ignoring anything else
Hope that helps.

If i connect the tape via a cable of 5 DIN to one 3.5 jack, (instead of the <proper> 5DIN to two 3.5 jack), will it play? any risk of damage?

3 Cables:

In/Out/Rem.

Don't see why this will damage it.

skylas

thx!
Until now I have created a wav file of each side of my disks, using your method via discology.
I have a tape recorder that can be connected via usb with the pc, so I wrote 2 old tapes just to test.
I have ordered a 5DIN to one jack 3.5 and a splitter to EAR and MIC, from Greece, lets see if it will work. Otherwise, I will get to retrocables, who have a proper cable. Thx!

Unfortunately, the 5 DIN to 1 3.5 jack did not work, even if i added a splitter.
I ordered from retrocables a proper cable, with EAR, MIC, and REM. I hope it will work at least for load only using EAR (until now I have only a tape with EAR and USB, so I write using PC and USB).

Finally the proper cables arrived, and unfortunately I get read error a or read error b, in 2 different keyboards.
I tried 3 different cassettes, 2 i have bought from cpcretrodev that probably are ok, and 1 that i have written on myself. Both keyboards were never tested to work with cassette.

cables i used:
http://retrocables.es/tienda/index.php?id_product=111&controller=product&id_lang=1
(there are 3 connections, 1 red, probably the mic i suppose, 1 for REM (smaller), and 1 i suppose for the earphone). I connected only the last one.
player i used:

Any adv?
