Has anyone ever tried a PCW9512 3in Drive on a CPC+ ? It seems to be the same part. Do they have the same part No. ?
Bryce.
Hi,
I'm not an expert on this field, but I think it could be problem (At least in theory)
The CPC has a SINGLE head disc drive (180KB), while the PCW9xxx series uses a DOUBLE head disc drive (720KB)
You could have a look at the following post I made a few years ago.
Three 6128 and a lot of screws (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/amstrad-cpc-hardware/three-6128-and-a-lot-of-screws/msg39322/#msg39322)
Your thread some time later
How to dismantle a CPC 6128 and replace the drivebelt (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/amstrad-cpc-hardware/how-to-dismantle-a-cpc-6128-and-replace-the-drivebelt/msg48074/#msg48074)
From reading these posts it looks like the CPC uses disc drives from the EME-1xx series.
The PCW uses disc drives from the EME-2xx series. The only exception is the DRIVE A: on the PCW 8xxx that is a EME-1xx drive.
Was this info of any use for You, or did I just repeat old stuff that's already known.

A two sided drive will work perfectly in a CPC, just it will only use one side. Exactly like a 3.5in drive does if you haven't added a side switch.

Edit: Yes, I realised after posting that I have a list of the part No.s already (Doh, forehead-slap etc)
I tried PCW 80 tracks double side (not the 9xxx but 8xxx series) on CPC, that works correctly but get tracks by pair (generaly track n=track n+1 but not always) because of the head half step compared to 40 tracks single side.
So it doesn't have a 40/80 Track jumper on the PCB ? That may be possible to add depending on the controller they used.

afaik no , it is software controlled, i suppose it read only even tracks for a 40 tracks disc, but when i'll have a bit of time to look in my spare , i'll try to make a picture of the PCB.
I had a pcs 9512 3 inch drive I'm my Cpc 6128 for a while. They work fine, and with parados you get to use all 80 tracks on both sides. However.... It's a pain as you you need to set 80 track double stepping in Parados config each time you want to read a normal 3 inch disc. And NO these drives do not work in the plus machines as the have a 12v motor.
