Very intrigued. I assume the rewritable memory can only be written to via the Play2CPC and not from the standard cartridge port of a Plus/GX4000?

In that case would cartridges still support the Plus/GX4000 and the writable feature could be ignored?

Might sound frivolous, but with the Play2CPC (Plus2CPC II), the C4CPC, wireless gamepads, the imperium solo and a REMOTE RESET BUTTON it's possible to use the CPC laying in the sofa to play the huge available cpr games collection.

Yes, it's 3 channels. It's not a Playcity, it follows the Playcity specification, which means the hardware ports used are the same.

Just wondering, if it's 3 extra sound channels, how does that get merged with the existing 3 channels? The PlayCity has its own audio output and 6 channels, I was under the impression that PlayCity software would only use that and not the on-board channels, but having never seen one, maybe I was under the wrong impression?

Afaik Playcity mixes its channels with the (mono) sound which is available on the expansion bus.

The 6 channels (3 internal + 3 in expansion) are mixed down and played through the CPC speaker, optionally you can pick the 6 channel mix from the expansion board to an external amplifier.
About Playcity, there are many 9 channel songs that uses both internal and external sound chips, and even more 6 channel songs. Normally in trackers you can assign each channel to either internal or external at your choice.

And are they left/center/right?

The play city provides 6 additional sound channels (And 2 extra noise generators). On a CPC this is passed back into the CPC via the expansion port (Albeit in Mono) and mixed into the standard AY sound making 9 channels and 3 noise generators in total.

On a plus there is no facility to feed audio back in on the expansion port, and because of this the PlayCity also has a stereo 3.5mm stereo jack for the extra channels.

I hope that answers the question?

I have trouble understanding what "The cartridges can be written directly from the CPC." exactly allows. I've never owned a CPC Plus so I'm not very familiar with cartridges in Amstrad context. Are they by standard read only like roms? So is this writing to those modern cartridges using SD cards internally as their storage? Ignoring the musical channels for a second, how this device is supposed to be used on a tradish CPC6128?

Normal Plus cartridges are read-only. We developed a RW cartridge, which can be read, written, erased and written again. To erase and write the cartridge you need the Play2CPC device. When used in a normal Plus cartridge port or a GX4000, it behaves as a normal read-only cartridge.

That means I gain extended memory possibilties for the GX4000 or writing things to the cartridge (as mentioned above). Sorry for my dumb questions - just to make it sure. :)

I'm proud to announce a joint development with TotO, the Play2CPC, an evolution of the Plus2CPC adapter which includes two major new features:

- 3 extra AY sound channels
- Support for rewritable cartridges

The new sound channels follow the Playcity hardware specification, so they are compatible with existing software like Arkos Tracker 2 and Alcon2020.

The cartridges can be written directly from the CPC. They can be used from a cartridge game to store settings and hi-scores, for instance, or be fully written with new games or other contents.

The status of the project is: working prototype

Oh, that's interesting - what's missing on a Plus that's there on a CPC with regards to feeding audio back? Kind of a shame, I wonder if a hardware mod is possible/feasible to make up for that deficiency...

I keep wondering about this too. I'm left thinking that if not by the expansion port then maybe via some kind of audio board that can be plugged in to the monitor output of the Plus. That can thru-put the video signals and mix the two audio sources together so that they can be output via the CM14 stereo speakers. But I don't have the skills to design or make such a device nor understand if it would even be possible.

Definitely possible and I'll design it if I get a PlayCity, but I'd like to understand how the mixing works on a stock CPC but not a Plus - as far as I know the expansion port is the same(?) If it isn't, a better mod would be something internal to the Plus to make it work like the CPC, if it's possible...

Yes, the same expansion port, but the Amstrad Plus doesn't have an internal speaker to output the mixed audio.

Ah, I think I understand - I guess the PlayCity relies on the whole tape-sound-interference thing to mix sound with the internal sound on a CPC464? I guess the only really viable way to mix sound on the Plus without any hardware modifications in that case would be to dedicate a channel to external sound and use DMA... I guess I should get on with making a 8-pin DIN mixer+a/v passthrough board :)

Just a curiosity question.
Such MSX game https://github.com/GuillianSeed/MetalGear seems to use 16banks of 16kb. We can assume a CPC port would be at least of the same size; probably more due to the potential difference of gfx format.
Would if fit inside such cartridge ?

16x16Kb = 256Kb and the maximum size of a Plus cart is 512Kb, so I guess short answer: yes.

How would be the compatibility with existing cartridge projects such as https://auamstrad.es/the-dandanator-entertainment-system/ ? (When looking only on the cartridge functionnality, not the sound)
Title: Re: Play2CPC (Plus2CPC II) : Extra sound channels and rewritable cartridges

They do occupy mainly different ROMs (lower than &80 or &80 and higher). But they must provide the lower ROM both at least. So they won't be compatible in general, but by smart programming (same lower ROM content etc.) the may work together. There my not be too much use though.

It will be not compatible, because the Play2CPC use Amstrad standard ROM paging and cartridge for new CPC games, while the DES use GameBoy Advance cartridge with a custom ROM paging through Z80 opcodes for new Speccy ports.

Do you plan an USB port to allow cartridge control from a PC ? It seems c4cpc  as such functionality, and it is probably a must to have to quickly test cross-developped programs

The C4CPC can already be used on the Plus2CPC and Play2CPC cartridge adapters.
The Play2CPC allows to program a compatible blank cartridge from the CPC. No USB plug.

I have played Barbarian II, Mystical and Tintin on the Moon in the CPC, and you can listen to the music of Navy Seals, Dick Tracy and Robocop II (both title and in-game).
It all depends on the plus feature usage.

And, of course, they all work in a Plus using the Play2CPC adapter.

Are you sure? I remember the Playcity add 3 ay voices. Maybe I'm wrong. :)
For Cyber Chicken all 6 channels were used.

??? Don't know what you mean.

The game songs were played with the internal PSG, because I got them in that format.
That way the six channels of the PlayCity were free for stereo sound effects.

I still wouldn't know a program to compile a song for the PlayCity.
But let's come back to the topic eventually.

Is there / Will there be an application to make songs for the extra sound channels of the Play2CPC?

It is your code. ;D
It use six channels for the Sfx, but it sound like 3 channels, because the same data are sent to the left and right. But that is not a problem at all, I have just remembered that.

You can use Arkos Tracker 2 or any other softwares by adapting the player to use the PlayCity ports instead.

A small gallery  of the finished Play2CPC
The design goal was to make a small device that takes no space behind the computer and don't block the screen view
And also don't have bright colors, LEDs or stickers, to not distract the player attention during the intense gameplay sessions :D

How about a 2nd version or with switch and no audio circuitry for those already with playcity. Seems a pity for a playcity owner to remove it and lose 3 audio channels in the process.

That would be the Plus2CPC - which the Play2CPC is based on.

Hello, the Play2CPC will come in only one fashion: edge connector with 3D printed enclosure. The enclosure is mandatory to prevent connecting the cartridge backwards or bad aligned. And a MX4 connector has no point for the intended usage. After long debate about these two subjects we made these decisions.

About the price, it will be bigger than Plus2CPC because it has many more components, but the good news is that the Alcon2020 physical edition will include a voucher to redeem part of the price.

The Play2CPC use the default configuration of most of the PlayCity programs, like ALCON 2020.
Few programs using 9ch AY will be not replayed, because it was not on the PlayCity base spec.

OIC you mean 1.00.04 as in https://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/amstrad-cpc-hardware/c4cpc-fw-update/25/#subject_126876 and that doesn't allow adding ROMs beyond 0+7, i.e. won't make C4CPC a "ROMboard" or "ROMbox" of sorts, but rather avoids a ROM conflict with one of these?
Title: Re: Play2CPC (Plus2CPC II) : Extra sound channels and rewritable cartridges
Post by: TotO on 11:37, 22 April 22
I mean the CprSelect program version v1.4 that allow the C4CPC to be used on the CPC to boot ROM (like diagnostic RAM) or launch the selected CPR files from many CPC games converted to the ROM format.

The Play2CPC use the standard Amstrad cartridge enclosure, so you can use the C4CPC since on it.
I have attached the file here, so you can replace the previous one. (CPC or PLUS is autodetected)

A cartridge could be used as ROMBox patching the OS to read initialize and use ROM numbers from &80, but it's a purely software issue, not related to the adapted itself

Can you great creators of this wonderful device please do me a favor?

What features have the Play2CPC and the PlayCity in common? Or let me ask in a better way: Which machine code will run on both of them? (Thinking of video raster interrupt and sound). Or best attempt of asking this question: Which I/O ports are common and work in the same way?

Would love to support the subset of features of both devices in my future software.  :)

You can use the &F888/&F988 audio ports and the CRTC cursor registers to program the raster interruption located at &0066. Both works on PlayCity and Play2CPC. More informations for developers will come asap.

Quote from: Maniac on 19:23, 27 May 22Did the solution of how to mix the extra audio in to the monitor speakers of the Plus models ever get sorted please?

That's not doable without additional elements, because you can't route anything to the audio output connector of the Plus from the expansion port. The same happens with the CPC, you can mix into the internal speaker with precise knowledge of the CPC schematics, but not into the audio jack.

So we made it in this way:

- You can hear the mix into the CPC speaker (or disable the mix with a switch)
- You always have the external sound in stereo in the Play2CPC connector
- You always have the internal sound in stereo in the CPC or Plus connector

so at the end you have the full mix in Mono or all independent channels in two jacks.

In my home arrangement I have two pairs of small external speakers, because I like to control individually the volume for music and sfx, but you can use an audio mixer too.

We have an answer around that but not now, because some work in progress and tests to do first.

@Cwiiis have you thought any more about this?

Whilst I love the idea of surround sound from my Plus I don't have much space on my desk for extra stuff.

But the expansion  port don't receive the internal sound?.  At least can be mixed  and sound in a scart cable.

I know but with the Plus having stereo speakers it would be great if we could mix the audio via some other route:

From that post from @Cwiiis:
"I guess I should get on with making a 8-pin DIN mixer+a/v passthrough board"

That would be my ideal scenario. I.e. take the audio out of the Play2CPC or PlayCity from its audio jack and via a mixer and connections mix that with Plus audio from monitor DIN both out the stereo monitor speakers of the Plus.

Yes, the best to do for the stereo sound (CPC or Plus) is to use the two jacks connectors and next "as peoples prefer".

- Connecting directly two pairs of PC speakers, for a 4.0 suround sound. 8)
- Mixing the two sources to one pair of PC speakers, for a stereo sound.
- Mixing the two sources to the TV set or Plus monitor, if no room left.

The Play2CPC is only edge version, and then there is a centronics-to-edge adapter.

Please send me PM for details

This is unlikely to work satisfactorily and could even be dangerous by connecting grounds that would otherwise be separate (ask someone that knows more about what they're talking about with that last bit :))

If I would still own a real CPC, I would buy a copy too. "Alcon" delivers real arcade-quality on a machine, that was made for Roland in time.

And the hardware for the extra sound-channels makes the audio fatter than fat!

My CPC crashes reliably when playing Alcon 2020 with the Play2CPC. Sometimes after a few minutes, sometime immediately. At least once I could see that it drew corrupt tiles to the screen just before crashing.

I have a second CPC where it works better, but also there it crashed twice (both when I lost my last life).

Any idea what could cause this? Extension port has been cleaned and otherwise has no issues with other extensions.

Update 1: on a 464 it doesn't work at all. Sometimes I get total garbage on screen but usually the screen just stays black. The 464 has a built in Vortex SP512 ram extension which might be in conflict.

The RAM expansions shouldn't affect the Play2CPC, but maybe it's drawing too much current. Do you have other cartridges to try or the Centronics adapter to check the Play2CPC on a Plus?

Is there a Play2CPC with an M4 compatible plug?  ???

In this case one could use the regular Centronics to M4 adapter cable.  8)

Play2CPC and M4 work perfectly together if you don't activate the cartridge emulation in the M4. You can plug a MX4 board, then the M4 on it, and the Play2CPC with a MX4-to-edge adapter

Edge connectors are dodgy and not reliable in my experience. In case the Play2CPC only has edge plugs and not MX4 then this would be a disadvantage imho. My suggestion would be to create a series with MX4 plugs (or any other non-sliding connector). I would definitely buy one then.  :) :) :)

Hi, I have received my play2cpc. I have tested it with Alcon2020 but do not notice any "sound" difference from running Alcon2020 in the standard cartridge plug without play2cpc.

I run it in a 6128 plus.

I recognise I am pretty "deaf", but maybe I am doing something wrong, as the device has some switches. How should the switches be? and should I use the output in play2cpc, I actually get a very low volume there.

Anyway, for me, it is a very convenient device, as I have also a normal 6128 and a 464.

In the Plus, you have the extra channels in the Play2CPC audio connector, try connecting speakers there (pressing firmly the first time)

I connect the C4CPC to the Play2CPC in a regular CPC6128 on a daily basis. Furthermore, I designed the Play2CPC specifically to be compatible with the C4CPC (wide power rails, customized software in both devices...) and never had a single problem.

There are, however, some basic guidelines to connect the C4CPC or any cartridge:

- Never connect with the computer powered on
- Never connect without the cartridge/C4CPC enclosure, or the Play2CPC enclosure, because it may lead to a bad alignment of the connector pins or even to be connected in reverse

You could post a close picture of the C4CPC so we can check for external signs of damage.

Title: Re: Play2CPC (Plus2CPC II) : Extra sound channels and rewritable cartridges

What I can say is the Play2CPC is the more impressive interface ever done to play games on CPC. It use a lot of electronics parts to allows amazing features (some used on ALCON 2020) and require real skill to be soldered by hand on both side of the PCB to fit.

Abalore do is best. We have secured all the critical parts since months to offer you the Play2CPC, but it require more time than expected to deliver it currently. We do our best to finish to ship the combo version with the ALCON 2020 second batch. Next, we will start to build the box versions and will open a dedicated website (ready since 3 months ago) with some surprises. :)

You can ask a Compact Centronics Adapter from @abalore for the Play2CPC.
Any kind of adaptors with PCB edge are dodgy, therefore I want to omit the edge problematic. For this reason I did ask for a Centronics or MX4 version. Will this ever be made?

The edge slot and plug are brand new. There is no reason that will make it not properly working, except if you have already issues with your Centronics port. Now, if you prefer, you can use an edge to centronics ribbon cable instead (to be not rigid). :)

I'm sure it is!  :) :) :) It looks very good!  :) :) :) However, 'edge' remains 'edge'. And 'edge' will can wobble a bit if you move something on the desk. And I really don't like a crash that much. It's just my personal experience. But at CPC meetings my friends seem to prefer Centronics over pcb-edge adaptors too. All this thing is of interest for 6128plus and Geman CPC6128 only anyway. Never mind.  :)

Well, I aim to omit edge completely to have a stable system. With stable I mean here in the way of having 'movement' on my desk - and no crash.

Mostly interested in some code examples, channels, video raster, I guess they are basically like playcity. but to be sure..

I hope soon some emulator adds this device to make tests easier.., I guess cpcec with Playcity would be similar..

Is there a developer documentation for the Play2CPC already? I would love to support it with my software. :) :) :)

From what I've read here in other threads, these are not been made. Support and building them sounds like a pain and prices of parts have gone up. XC95144XL used for this are now around $40AUD each.

I've messaged @gerald to purchase blank PCBs or even order my own board, but need the gerber for that. Plus the JED for programming the CPLD. No response. Full mailbox makes sense then

From what I've read so far the Xilinx was memory mapped to pass instructions to the firmware on the MCU to interface to the menu system. It also does the noca$h ACID replacement inside the Xilinx. The flash memory to CPC is the easy part, where the MCU just controls the upper address lines to change which ROM is being accessed, and provides a mechanism to upload new ROMs. Would have been a fair bit of time and work to put that all together into what it was

@abalore sorry the above was the C4CPC :picard:

QuoteI have some of them of the v4.3 version (the latest). At a price of 25 euro without enclosure. I have to check the shipping cost.
Please reply back when you get a chance and I can sort that one
