Yep, AJ-5 is pretty much similar to other analogue PC joysticks of the era and can be used with the plus range. There is an article of AJ-5 also in the cpcwiki.
AJ-5s aren't really that rare and can be found quite easily on ebay. I believe they were also included with Amstrad Mega PC along with a clone Megadrive/Genesis controller.

Funny thing is, I've worked thru all the UK commercial CPC magazines from the 90's and I never found a mention of it.

Got one of them too, but it doesn't say Amstrad. Mine has no writing on it. However that kind of analogue joysticks are supported by FutureOS - you can give them a try there. :)
