PSU Power question for Bryce

okay, it's open to more people than Bryce..... but I'm sure he'll know off the top of his head 




If, someone wished to have a 6128 powered by a Li-ion battery rather than from the mains, what would I need to purchase?
Let's also assume that the 6128 has a HxC attached as an internal A: drive.


What would it take to power this? a 5v 2A Li-ion rechargeable battery? I'm no electronics guru, I dabble with the odd Arduino or BeagleBone but I'm more a C coder than a proper hardware / electronics person.


any guidance appreciated.  (I can hear Gryzor already asking, "Why would you want to do that?"....)

I'll give you an answer anyway:

Lets take a typical laptop battery such a Thinkpad battery like this one: Lenovo ThinkPad Battery 33 41U3196 bei notebooksbilliger.de
In this case it's a 14.4V  2600mAh battery. So it could theoretically supply 14.4V at 2.6A for a whole hour. In reality it can't, it's probably designed to supply about 800mA for a little over 3 hours. At 2600mA it would get very hot.
We only need 5V, which 2.88 times smaller, so theoretically it could supply 7488mA at 5V for an hour or 2A for 3.7hours.

Of course getting the 14.4V down to 5V has huge losses, so in a real situation it would probably keep the CPC running for about 2.5 hours reliably.

If you are intending to experiment with something like this, try and get a battery that's above, but very close to 5V, ie: 6 to 7.5V, that way you have the least losses converting it down, but it will still supply above 5V right down to the last minutes.

Did you want the CPC to be able to recharge it too?

That's easily sorted, using a portable Sony PS1 5" LCD screen running off 7v

Well, after doing a garage clear out, I have found 3-4 old laptops that could be donor bodies... so that is one option!

On a side-note, I've just bought some of these to help me power a Teensy 3.0 that I'm using to display the temp/fuel gauges in my hot-rod car.  It allows me to drop the 12v battery down to the 5v needed for the arduino.  This is what prompted me to ask the original question.

That reminds me of an issue of Practical Computing from the late seventies which featured a PET2001 which was installed in a luxury car (I forget which one).

Nice one, but only half the CPC's horizontal MODE 2 resolution.
These were heavily modded from 2004 approx. not just into HTPC cases (offline AVR code includes clocks and game console emulation), cf. Was man aus nem PSOne schönes machen kann - LCDs - VDR Portal

BTW, I have an adapter modeled after the PSone base (f)lying around somewhere to screw these screens to a flat surface without the need to damage anything, as a template if there's anyone who'd have the equipment these days to mold or fab them.

maybe next year, I'll finally get around to making my fully portable CPC 6128....

You should not try to type while you are driving 
It should be easier to install a gx4000 than a CPC.
