QuoteBootstrap post-collapse technology
Winter is coming and Collapse OS aims to soften the blow. It is a z80 kernel and a collection of programs, tools and documentation that allows you to assemble an OS that can:

  • Run on minimal and improvised machines.
  • Interface through improvised means (serial, keyboard, display).
  • Edit text files.
  • Compile assembler source files for a wide range of MCUs and CPUs.
  • Read and write from a wide range of storage devices.
  • Replicate itself.
Additionally, the goal of this project is to be as self-contained as possible. With a copy of this project, a capable and creative person should be able to manage to build and install Collapse OS without external resources (i.e. internet) on a machine of her design, built from scavenged parts with low-tech tools.
May run on a CPC with small adaptations  ;D

Indeed, I have contacted the author and he seems interesting in seeing it running on CPC.

Still hasn't done it though, hope it's ready because that virus is moving FAST.

The problem with generic OS is always that they need to do a 'compromise'. Personally I prefer a monolithic OS which is specially using the unique powers of the great series of CPC and Plus computers. To me, two of that kind are know.

hmm, supports megadrive - does it support existing megradrive keyboards and discdrives?

Sykobee (Briggsy)

It'll run on the Z80 in the Megadrive, it says it supports a certain PS2 adaptor kit.

I wonder how it compares with other Z80 kernels - fuzix, symbos, and the like?

Extending it to support the CPC obviously requires a writing the drivers for the basic I/O the kernel supports already, and then the wider capabilities of the machine (that means binaries are not universal).

I am surprised no-one to date has created an OS for consoles like the SNES and megadrive though to turn them into a home computer.  Disc drives are not that easy to come by though these days, nor are native keyboards - but I am sure someone can adapt an SDCard to work on one.  I guess megadrive keyboards are even more difficult to come by as they to my knowledge were only made by Shinco.
