Video 1 - EuroWACCI issue 1 (1997)

This is the first of a series of videos which will cover Disczines from the UK and Europe from the 80's and 90's.

Disc Side A - EuroWACCI - 1:12 to 17:23

Disc Side B - Four games - 18:40 to 29:24

Remember that this is a "disc magazine" - so no flashy graphics or music. However, other Disczines took a different approach and I hope to show some of them in the later videos. To reduce the length of this video I scroll thru each text page at a fast pace, so when you want to read a particular page - Quickly hit the PAUSE button!

Video 4 - French Disczine RUNSTRAD from 1992.

I think this is a disc supplement to issue 33 of the magazine but I'm not 100%
If anyone has any info on this please share!

Each page is composed of four screen files totalling over 40K in size.

An excellent mix of text and graphics, just a pity my schoolboy French isn't up to the task of translation.

Video 6 - UK Disczine "IMPACT!" released in May 1994.
Mostly text with a little graphics with a nice little tune from the "MUNSTERS" CPC game(?)

Please Note - Normally I would record a video, review it and then record a 2nd video removing anything too personal, uninteresting or boring.
This video was recorded about a month ago and C-19 means I'm stuck outside Glasgow so no 2nd vid is possible - now having said that I would suggest jumping the portion of the video from 3:20 to 6:12 as the short stories displayed are not very interesting.

Wow, that Runstrad 'zine looks amazing. It's the kind of "messy design that actually looks quite fab" punk 'zine look that I always associate with print zines, only in disk form. I'll have to tone up my French so I can read it properly! :D

Boy that font is hard to read...

Zoe Robinson

Hard to read? But it's eyetest.ttf, the default font on Windows Phones! ;)

mr_lou

Yea diskmags has to be pleasant for the eyes, so font matters a lot.

I really like how it was done in Ovation #6. That's how I'd do it myself if I ever made a diskmag (on the CPC). One plain colour + a shadow, in two columns  - and make it possible for the user to change colours.

But: Nowadays I (still) feel that diskmags ought to be on blu-ray because it allows for so much more diverse content and it can run almost anywhere.  :)

This has got me thinking... Has anyone hooked up a Blu-Ray drive to a CPC? Possible with an IDE interface and a SATA to IDE adapter? I imagine a CD-ROM drive must have been done at some point?
8-Bit Memoirs CPC blu-ray edition?
An expanding array of hardware available at www.cpcstore.co.uk (and issue 4 of CPC Fanzine!)

I think for a CPC version of something like 8-bit Memoirs, it would make more sense to make a dedicated cartridge.

Video 9(A) - FANZAN issue 5

UK Disczine from 1992.
This video is side A of the disc - a video for side B (the PD "goodies") will be posted in a day or so.

The content is well written and informative with a good balance between games and serious software.

The same here - how I missed this one back then (and being in the UK) I simply don't know. I had never read this until yesterday.

Gryzor

Oh, I meant in general. I don't think I ever saw a diskzine back in my teens to be honest. Possibly on my ST later on...

Currently playing on: 2xCPC464, 1xCPC6128, 1x464Plus, 1x6128Plus, 2xGX4000. M4 board, ZMem 1MB and still forever playing Bruce Lee.
No cheats, snapshots or emulation. I play my games as they're intended to be played. What about you?
