Title: Telnet client for CPC
Post by: Duke on 20:11, 21 March 18

I put together a new and improved telnet client for use with M4 board.
It still is not perfect, but maybe useful for some, it should have no major issues with basic telnet servers. It does negotiate the screen size and filter out escape sequences (0x1B [.....).

Download directly to your CPC via:
|httpget,"spinpoint.org/telnet.bin"   (also attached here)

and run"telnet"

Type in IP or name of telnet server.
If the port is not the standard port 23, you add ":portnum" to the IP/name.
Ie. spinpoint.org:8877  or 192.168.1.1:9999

At any time you can press ESC and connect to a new telnet server.

Have fun!

It doesn't seem to work on my 6128+ with the latest firmware (2.0.5b1). All I get is a blank screen  :(

See @GUNHED (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=2029) ? I'm not that lazy. Now back to the couch  ;)

Thanks for testing.
I was using my CPC6128+ with v2.0.5B1 to write the app.  You have a particular rom setup? or just M4 rom in slot 6?

I had Protext in slot 8. I removed it, but still a blank screen. No other extras.

Weird. Can you try and download it again, maybe something happened.
Works fine regardless if other roms present or not when I try. Just tested my regular CPC6128 aswell.
Even starts in WinApe.
Anyone else tried to launch it?

Hello everybody,

It works perfectly for me with the firmware version 2.0.4 with 6128
I can configure My Hp Procurve switch with my CPC  ;D .
I have only a little issue :
When I press the return, the prompt is duplicated without a line break.

Thanks Duke for your great Job !

Hello Duke,

Telnet works great thanks (running on 2.0.5b1).

Attached is a quick screen grab of my CPC6128+ logging onto the 'Wikipedia telnet' (I pressed 'Esc' after the ASCII art intro, as it will scroll down a bit more).

Quotetelnet.wmflabs.org

The only things that would be nice for this type of session would be the ability to pause the output and resume.

I also noticed that if displaying a very large output it will lock up.

Just a side note for those searching on the Wikipedia telnet session, I noticed some searches will be case sensitive.

A perfect example search, once logged in, simply type...    Amstrad

Cheers,
Shane

@Duke (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1624) Issue solved. I copied the file manually into the SD card and everything works fine.

The first time I tried I used |httpget to get it, and the resulting telnet.bin was shorter than the original one. I'll try again this evening to see if I can reproduce the problem (I'll post in the CPCWifi main thread if I find something).

Thanks!

Will be good for testing, when I look at the issues mentioned.

Hey @Duke (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1624),

I just tested the thing with |httpget again and everything worked fine on the first try. So there's definitely no problem with the M4 or the telnet client; probably some one-off issue with my home network.

Thanks!

Just used it to connect to naken.cc at port 6666, a telnet chat server. Somebody even talked to me!

That was the first time I got online with my CPC 6128, something I dreamed as I child. 30 years later, this was a moment of absolute joy. I would like to give my warmest thanks to Duke for enabling this to happen!

Another interesting (and maybe good for testing) telnet site is 'telehack.com'.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telehack (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telehack)

http://telehack.com/telehack.html (http://telehack.com/telehack.html)

Quote

Telehack

Telehack is a simulation of a stylized arpanet/usenet, circa 1985-1990.
It is a full multi-user simulation, including 25,000 hosts and BBS's
from the early net, thousands of files from the era, a collection of
adventure and IF games, a working BASIC interpreter with a library of
programs to run, simulated historical users, and more.

Connecting
----------

On the web: http://telehack.com/ (http://telehack.com/)

or open a shell and type

    telnet telehack.com

Telehack.com supports an open web telnet interface.  You can also telnet
directly to telehack on the regular telnet port of 23.

The following ports are also open for those, who have issues connecting:
443, 1337, 8080, 31173 (e.g. 'telnet telehack.com 443')

Special control characters:

    ctrl-C       interrupt program
    ctrl-N       next line
    ctrl-P       previous line
ctrl-R       quick relay (requires backgrounded relay)
    ctrl-T       print system status
    ctrl-W       delete word
    (up arrow)       previous line
    (next arrow)   next line
    (tab)       autocomplete next command/file/user/host

Shane

Hey Takis, thanks for the heads up.
This morning (Saturday in Australia) I headed over to naken.cc:6666 and had a very friendly (telnet) chat with some of the guys logged in at the time.
It was a little hard as all my typed text was blind until I hit enter and it was echoed back to me.
Sometimes the messages incoming appeared a little lagged and you could see the text coming through very slowly, but overall still a cool experience from the old Amstrad.  ;)

I also thought once I had finished the chat session, that something like a session log would be really cool.
Just a thought. May not be possible.

Cheers,
Shane

I haven't had a chance to look at this telnet for CPC yet, but I seem to remember from when I used to use telnet, the telnet client usually had an option to enable local echo (so you could see what you type). @Duke (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1624) does your client have this feature?

Is there some kind of command like "set echo on"? I really don't remember the telnet commands.

How difficult would it be to setup a globally accessible telnet based chat server? I used to be in a Greece based one (it was called Homecoming and was hosted in National Technical University of Athens - NTUA). It had several rooms, you could pm someone and it was really really nice. Do not know which exact software it was running but we would connect via telnet. Come on, you guys, wouldn't you like all the crazy Amstrad forum maniacs inside a chat room?

It's possible to negotiate this with the telnet server, yes. Maybe in next release I will add an option for it.

For reference, there is a website dedicated to old BBS style telnet servers: http://www.telnetbbsguide.com (http://www.telnetbbsguide.com)
I wonder how many of these will work on the CPC? :)
Of particular note is the Amstrad BBS: https://www.telnetbbsguide.com/bbs/amstrad-bbs/

Ports to connect being 464 (telnet), 664 (rlogin) and 6128 (SSH)!  :D

Same here, yet the embedded telnet client on the page worked fine. I noticed it connects through a proxy, so perhaps we can't connect to amstrad.simulant.uk because it is geo-blocked outside of UK?

I have now given this CPC Telnet client a go. It seems to work well enough.
I'm guessing telnet servers that make use of colour or special extended ASCII characters are impossible to view?

Try typing amstrad.simulant.uk:464

I could connect, but later some garbage comes out.

For now these are filtered out, but yeah we got only 2 colours in 80x25 (which is a pretty good terminal window size, I think), so colours is no go.

Sorry, I should have specified, when I couldn't connect by typing "telnet amstrad.simulant.uk 464" I was referring to using a different telnet client on linux, not using your CPC telnet client :)
I assumed jomicamp was also trying with a different client given the way he structured his command.

Using the CPC, I WAS able to connect with your client Duke, but then, as you said, I got garbage characters appear and couldn't do anything.

It's great app so far and I've found several BBS it works well with for simple text based MUD games :D

Nice one @Duke (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1624) !

I tried to connect to http://bbs.fozztexx.com/ and this client doesn't seem to work as expected because I think it is sending CR LF and the server expects only CR (perhaps?).

The server is new and experimental, so it could be also a problem on their side. Could it be possible to configure few things on the client? For example: only send CRs.

Thanks for this!

I have to confess Telnet passed me by at the time. I did dabble with Compunet on the C64 but that didn't last long when my Dad got the Phone bill  :D .
Is there some specific Amstrad "sites" to have a look at and how does the whole chat thing work? i can remember logging into Compunet and being in a chat room. I imagine it's like that.

I had the same problem, and I fixed it by copying the file manually into the SD card. In my first attempt, I had downloaded the client into the M4 using |httpget, and the resulting telnet.bin file was missing some bytes. I didn't investigate it further, so no idea what happened there.

That worked! Thank you, I played a good game of chess online, very basic looking, but highly intense once you understand the controls, unfortunately unranked as couldn't work out how to sign up.

The StarTrek and official Amstrad boards still work, but not on my 6128 Plus. Please recommend gaming and news boards 🤪[emoji1303][emoji23]

Anyone got R-Type 128k working on the M4 board yet?

Hi we do already have IRC and BBS chat on our Amstrad dedicated BBS. Though as some other users have already mentioned the BBS doesn't seem to work yet with Duke's telnet client. I've logged on successfully with it but sometimes it won't display anything, sometimes it displays some menus or intro text (such as the login and user setup), and other times the menus go completely bonkers. A few times it crashed my CPC too. I'm going to try it on my 6128 PLUS next. On Amstrad NC200, PPC640 and other Amstrads the BBS does work really well. Also on linux and on my Amiga 1200 too. So I think it is just down to Duke's telnet client needing further work, features and testing. It is awesome he even made it in the first place with little time to spare! I'm sure he'll improve it when he gets more time...

Currently users have accessed the Amstrad BBS with Pace RS232 and other hardware/software - but to use it on the M4 would be fantastic for a lot of users.
So what we really need next is an ANSI BBS terminal package or more fully featured telnet client to get everything working that works with the M4 board.
I did hope to try work on one myself but haven't had much time and also I've not done much Amstrad coding (other than when I was 8 out of the back of Amstrad Action etc!!).
Great work though Duke, if you get a chance to test with the Amstrad BBS at amstrad.simulant.uk:464 let me know, I can always help with anything you need to know or hopefully aid in debugging etc.
It would be great if you could github the source code and open up the project for more work, or if we could all get together and get a new ANSI BBS client that works with the M4 set up between us all. The possibilities are exciting with online chat, message boards, file uploads and downloads, sending email through the BBS, online gaming and such :)
--
Another thought that may be easier is if a driver for the m4 could be made to emulate the pace rs232 connection. So when you load Ansiterm / EwenTerm / Honeyview / Honeyterm or other existing Terminal emulators that are already out there on CPC, they think the wifi connection is the serial connection? Then software from back in the day could be used to logon to the BBSes with the M4? How cool would that be???!

Here is the source code for the super simple basic telnet client:
https://github.com/M4Duke/M4examples/blob/master/telnet.s (https://github.com/M4Duke/M4examples/blob/master/telnet.s)

Edit:
Added some ANSI escape codes + you can press TAB to pause and  TAB again to resume.

Duke could you put the binary of v1.0.1 on spinpoint.org/telnet.bin so new readers of this thread will have the latest version and eventually on the first message ?

That would be great, does the v1.0.1 have the SOS bugs above or are they fixed in that release? I'd also like to update the latest version on Amstrad BBS too :)

No, but the fixes should be included in his version here:

Hi this now resolves well but has the same bug where once it gets past the Amstrad welcome screen all the output scrunches up in the bottom right of the screen and nothing can be read...
If you log in to Amstrad BBS as username Guest you will see it works well until the Welcome screen and then the main menu won't appear. This is after selecting that the console is not ANSI or IBM extended characters compatible on the initial login selections.
Thanks for any help :)

Great thanks Duke :)

I also found a little way down this page: https://www.genesis8bit.fr/frontend/misc.php (https://www.genesis8bit.fr/frontend/misc.php)
A zip file called cpcip020.zip which might help for reference...

EMulating the rs232 interface would be amazing.  I have been watching for a real one for months to buy but they are clearly as rare as rocking horse £$%@

i think i missed this thread - i wonder what's involved in making a Gopher client for CPC?

In case you are interested to add gopher support to the telnet client or make a gopher client... I have setup a gopher server on Azure - it seems to work well, and for anyone wanting to setup one, it is fairly straight forward and you can do it for free (I am not sure how much traffic a gopher server would get these days).

To access this gopher server, http://gopher.australiaeast.cloudapp.azure.com:70

You can use chrome with the gopherspace extension: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/burrow-gopherspace-explor/plhaaggiajlcjclagmjnjmaonhkdhhji?hl=en

I followed these linux instructions:  https://prgmr.com/blog/gopher/2018/11/09/setting-up-gopherserver.html

What do you think?

Ok, I have a problem.
Version 1.0.0 works fine and connects to my BBS and on my Pi for telnet.
While the 1.0.1 and the Symbos version connects via telnet to Pi but does nothing :-/

Not sure if this site can work its not telnet but it tell they have some type of telnet support.

www.Glasstty.com (http://www.glasstty.com)

(from de first article)

"
Telstar is not Telnet Whilst TELSTAR is accessed using TCP/IP it is not a Telnet Server. However, TELSTAR does include a Telnet parser which will respond to a very small subset of Telnet negotiation requests."
