Title: The Advanced Music System - The Rob Baxter Files (1987 to 1989)
Post by: ComSoft6128 on 14:19, 21 September 19
Video 1 of 3.

The Brandenburg Concertos 1 and 2.
Transcribed on the CPC by Rob Baxter in 1987.

I would highly recommend using 4K Video Downloader (easy to use/takes minutes) to strip the audio to MP3 so that you can play it on other devices - MP3 file size is 19.1MB.

I know I tried this application once back in the day, but I don't remember much from it. I'm sure I concluded it was too complicated for me, but I must have heard "The Entertainer" at the time.  :)

The one thing our modern CPC tracks are missing nowadays, is that oldschool feel. The simplicity... It's very cosy.

There is something relaxing and pure (for lack of a better word) about listening to classical music through basic AY tones.
Very nice.

Incidentally, does anyone know what the music on Tempest's main screen was?
That was a glorious piece of music.

And how about Sabre Wulf's main menu music?

Title: 1988 - The Advanced Music System - Halloween music by Rob Baxter
Post by: ComSoft6128 on 06:30, 31 October 19
From the Rob Baxter music disc V.

When I first listened to this I was hoping for the CPC version of the theme from John Carpenter's Halloween movie  :o  - but unfortunately it isn't that.
It seems familiar but I can't pin it down, if anyone has any info on this please share.

However, whether it is an original piece by Rob Baxter or an adaption of someone else's work doesn't lessen the fact
that it is a lovely piece of CPC music with good use of stereo throughout.

Music starts at 0:15 and finishes at 5:26. - Turn up the volume!

Title: 1987 - The Advanced Music System. Bach - Suite No. 2 in B minor
Post by: ComSoft6128 on 18:34, 10 November 19
From the Rob Baxter music disc 2.

"As far as the suite in B minor was concerned, all I intended to do with this work was to transcribe the delightful Badinerie. This I did.
Then I tried the Rondo and before I knew where I was, I had transcribed the whole suite of dances! So I decided to present the entire work and  completed the overture. In effect the work was transcribed in reverse order!"

Title: 1987 - The Advanced Music System. Bach - Toccata and Fugue in D minor (Dorian)
Post by: ComSoft6128 on 14:45, 11 November 19
From the Rob Baxter music disc II (1987)

This is good, this is very good.
Even if you're not a great fan of classical music (like myself) you should recognise this from movies and adverts.
Excellent use of stereo throughout the piece - you might be surprised how good the CPC can sound.

"My version of the mighty Dorian Toccata and Fugue is probably my most ambitious transcription I have ever attempted. Obviously, the great Toccata sounds a bit thin when reduced to three voices but the Fugue (I feel) works very well. Listen out for some frantic stereo switching! In the Prelude No. 2, I make extensive use of what I call my 'celestial harp' effect. I developed this technique while working on the Brandenburg Concertos and used it fairly sparingly throughout that disc. It only appears to any great extent in the final movement of No. 5. On this present disc, I have used this effect more widely. See if you can guess how it works. It is really very simple (Hint - if you listen over stereo headphones the effect is completely lost but the method becomes quite clear. This is due to the very sharp stereo separation produced by the Amstrad.) "

The Blue Danube

Glorious.

A treat for the ears - shows the audio output of the CPC at its best.
Best to listen to using external speakers - laptop speakers just don't do it justice.

From the Rob Baxter Music Disc 3 (1987)
Music starts at 3:01 and finishes at 14:34

"THE BLUE DANUBE by Johann Strauss (1825-99) was composed in Vienna in 1867. The waltz's
full german name is- 'An der Schonen Blauen Donau' ( By The Beautiful Blue Danube ).

The version on this disc is from a piano edition.

Whenever I hear this waltz I cannot help visualizing outer space.
It might be the graceful ballet sequence in the film 2001 A Space
Oddysey which used this waltz so well... or perhaps it is just from
playing 'Elite' too often on the computer. Whatever it is, the
association is forever fixed in my mind."

This is wonderful. I used to make a lot of use of The Music System back in the 8-bit era, as it was just so good. Never had the Advanced version but I think I'll have to give it a try. :)

Hello,

All interesting info about TMS and AMS, but I'm wondering if there's any info about the .MUS file format?   Tried searching for things, but there are other things AMS that keep coming up.

Hi @GeoffB17 (https://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1489) ,

Unfortunately there is no information in either the Music System or the Advanced Music System manuals regarding the file format.

An entry from cpc-power on what I think is a missing disc from the WACCI PD library contains this info:

"AMS-MIDI: converts disc files created by Rainbird's Advanced Music System (AMS) into a form useable by the program Perform. Perform then transmits the files over the MIDI interface in the RAM Music Machine. If suitable equipment (a MIDI instrument) is connected to the MIDI OUT socket of the Music Machine then the music will be played."

So it looks like someone managed to decipher the file format.

Hmm.   I assumed it was possible, the question is more how practical it might be.

There are a number of considerations, for example, there must ne thousands of midi files about, and some of them are pretty good.   If converting a .MUS file is complicated, and there's a .MID already, then there's no point, unless there are aspects of the 'preformance' in the .MUS that is better than that in available .MID files.   And the .MUS files that you've kindly presented suggests that there are aspects of the 'performances' here that do transcend the mere sound (which by modern standards isn't too great).

I'll have to dig about and see if I can find anything about AMS-MIDI.   Otherwise I'll have to study the .MUS files I've got and see if I can 'decode' them.   I've looked inside some already, and they're nothing like midi, but I can see some data that MIGHT relate to something.

As I understand it, the .MUS files are no more than 3 part (as in left, right and center) but usually just the one 'sound' (instrument).   The system I think allowed some different sounds, but I don't think they could be played at the same time?

As these CPC files are over three decades old "modern standards" don't interest me - YouTube is awash with every possible variation of these pieces. Some good some bad - it is only the CPC output that I find of interest.

As to how Rob Baxter recorded these, reading both manuals may be of help.
I have looked for more information myself but aside from some info on his Amiga PD disks I can find nothing.

Title: The Advanced Music Studio - Sabre Dance by Aram Khachaturian
Post by: ComSoft6128 on 10:56, 01 February 20
From the Rob Baxter Music Disc 3 (1987)

Instantly recognizable................

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DdT5jun-UaE (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DdT5jun-UaE)

From Wikipedia:

"In Popular Culture

The "Sabre Dance" has been used in numerous films, animated films, television series, video games, and commercials over the years, oftentimes for humorous effects. The piece's popular familiarity has been enhanced by its traditional use as accompaniment by travelling circuses and on television variety shows such as The Ed Sullivan Show when novelty acts such as plate spinners appeared.

Some notable television shows that have used it include The Jack Benny Program (1961), A Piano in the House from The Twilight Zone (1962), The Onedin Line (1971 and 1972), The Benny Hill Show (1985), Our Very First Telethon episode of Full House (1990), The Simpsons (1991), Two and a Half Men (2004), What's New, Scooby-Doo? (2004), "Peterotica" episode of Family Guy (2006), SpongeBob SquarePants (2007), and The Big Bang Theory (2009).

On June 6, 2013 on the 110th anniversary of Khachaturian's birthday a modern take of the Sabre Dance—Sabre Dance on the Street—was performed at Yerevan Cascade by Barekamutyun dance ensemble and Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra.

Films

Films in which the "Sabre Dance" was used include The Barkleys of Broadway (1949), One, Two, Three (1961), The System (1964), Amarcord (1973), Nu, pogodi! 6th episode "Countryside" (1973), Pee-wee's Big Adventure (1985), Jumpin' Jack Flash (1986), Repentance (1987), Punchline (1988), Hocus Pocus (1993) Radioland Murders (1994), The Hudsucker Proxy (1994),[71] Don't Drink the Water (1994), I Married a Strange Person! (1997), Vegas Vacation (1997), A Simple Wish (1997), Blues Brothers 2000 (1998), The Lion King 1½ (2004), Kung Fu Hustle (2005), Scoop (2006), Sicko (2007), Ghost Town (2008), Witless Protection (2008), Le Concert (2009), Pájaros de papel (2010), Sabre Dance (2015).[66] In his frenzied comedy One, Two, Three, director Billy Wilder used the dance repeatedly for comic effect, including a crazed chase through East Berlin, and the chaotic closing ride to the airport featuring James Cagney and Horst Bucholz. It was also played briefly in Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted.

Video games in which the "Sabre Dance" was used include:

Road Runner (the 1985 Atari System 1 arcade version).
Sleeping Dogs on the classical Boosey and Hawkes radio station.
Final Fantasy IV, as background music for the dancing girls' routines.
Aero the Acro-Bat, as the music that plays when Aero is invincible for a short time."

BACH - the Goldberg Variations - Video 1 of 2

The Variations should be one video but unfortunately due to a "technical issue" has to consist of two videos.

From the Rob Baxter Music Disc IV

Transcribed to the CPC in 1988 by Rob Baxter and played using the Advanced Music System by Rainbird Software.

Music starts at 1:07 and finishes at 26:06

"About Music IV - why more Bach?
Since I completed my previous collection for the Advanced Music System, Music III, I have spent a little time thinking what I could do with the AMS that was a bit different. I suppose you could say that I was looking for a new sound. After a little soul-searching I found exactly what I was looking for in the keyboard music of my old favourite, J. S. Bach. While transcribing the Goldberg Variations, the Italian Concerto, the Chromatic Fantasia and the Two Part Inventions I discovered a lightness of tone in the Music System and the Amstrad's sound chip that I had not really been aware of before. This also comes over in the delightful Rameau suite on side two. With this disc, more than any other I've done, you MUST listen in STEREO if you possibly can.

The GOLDBERG VARIATIONS
This beautiful, transcendental work was composed in 1742. It was written (according to Forkel, Bach's first biographer) for J. T. Goldberg, a pupil of Bach's, to play to one Count Kaiserling who,it is said suffered from insomnia. Written for harpsichord with two manuals, the work comprises a highly ornamented opening Aria which is followed by thirty variations. The work should really be listened to in sequence, as a complete entity to be fully appreciated - although each individual variation will quite happily stand on its own as a work in its own right. The final variation (No. 30) is a "Quodlibet", which incorporated a couple of popular songs of the day, showing Bach, maybe, was writing with a twinkle in his eye!
The work concludes with the return of the Aria." - Rob Baxter May 1988.

BACH - Sheep may safely graze

"Sheep may safely graze:-

Aria for Soprano with two recorders and figured bass from Bach's earliest Secular Cantata, entitled WAS MIR BEHAGT which was composed in 1716.
The text of the Aria compares the sense of security felt by a people governed by a wise ruler to that of sheep in the care of a reliable shepherd.
It was composed to celebrate the birthday of Duke Christian of Sachsen-Weissenfels.
In my arrangement I have chosen to, I have chosen to accentuate a particular "march" like quality in this work, which may have not been apparent before. "  - Rob Baxter May 1988.

I 100% agree with you that he was a very talented individual and indeed considering the limitations of the software (AMS operated in 64K) and the CPC hardware he produced some remarkable transcriptions to the CPC. He was active on the CPC scene between 1987 to 1989 before moving to the Amiga sometime in 1989 when he released his first PD disk for that machine, between 1989 - 94 he released fifteen disks of classical music for the Amiga.
Sadly, he died in 1996 at the age of just 39.

Thanks for the extra information about Rob Baxter, there's some useful pointers in there regarding my interests regarding Midi.

I noted the info regarding how RB was creating the music files, esp the references to the systems used.   Synthia, EZ FM and Sonix.   I would think it likely that the work done on creating the arrangements was not duplicated for the Amstrad versions and the Amiga versions, there would be similarities?   The Amiga files are shown as being .smus files, the Amstrad ones are .mus, there MAY be similarities (I've yet to access a .SMUS file so I can compare it with the .mus ones I have.

I have actually found a prog for converting SMUS to MID, incl source in C, this might be interesting but I'm not certain the format of the SMUS is right, and/or the same as the Amstrad AMS .MUS files.   Still investigating.

I've listened to some of the files you've demonstrated, but the sounds seem the same to me.   Have I listened to the wrong ones?   Do some files use different 'instruments'?  Are any of the files using different instruments on different tracks (as could be done with midi files).   I totally understand your wish to demonstrate the pieces as they would have sounded back then, but I'm thinking about the work done by RB on the arrangements and how much more impressive that could be if played back using more modern midi equipment.

Hi @GeoffB17 (https://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1489) ,

I have collected (and read) all the reviews and letters regarding the Music System and the Advanced Music System that I could find, the reviews might help in showing how the .mus files were created and indeed it looks like a midi module was proposed for the program but unfortunately that never came about. The reviews are from AMTIX, The Amstrad Computer User and Amstrad Action.

Thanks for these links.   I'll wade my way through them.  Hopefully I'll find some hints that might lead me to other information.

The structure of the .mus files used must have come from somewhere, even if more than one place.  Just need some hints.

I assume that back then midi was not an obvious 'need'.   Anything in the software would have been useful but ONLY if the computers being used had some midi capability, or interfaces were readily available, or if there was lots of devices to connect to.   All this not so big then?

One little oddity.   The .mus files all contain the marker 'IamMusic', maybe more than once.   Not sure of the significance of this.  I've looked for this via Google, but the results don't prove anything.   However I did also find a couple of files called MUSICSY1.D64 and the ....2 partner, I think comething to do with Commodore 64.   Looking in the files they look like some sort of disk image?   The point being, one of then (#1) also contains use of the marker IamMusic.

Thanks again.

"I think this a particularly inspiring piece of music, with its march like main theme contrasting elegantly with the beautiful middle section.
Grieg was a Norwegian composer who combined a very distinct nationalism of style, with an unashamed romanticism.
Troldhaughen is the name of the town, not far from Bergen, where he made his country home."

"I feel that with Music III I have pushed the Advanced Music System to its limits. Still though, I felt the same thing a long time ago as well, so I might prove myself wrong again!"
I am very proud of Music III and I hope you get a lot of pleasure from listening to it. Once again, do try and listen to the music through your stereo system as you would miss so much if you didn't.
That's it from me for a while. I do not doubt there will be a Music IV from me at some time in the not-too-distant future, but for the time being I will be re-charging my mental batteries; I must admit that producing Music III has been a somewhat exhausting experience... But well worth the effort  !!
Thank you very much  for your continuing interest.
                                                                                                  Best wishes;

Organ Music from the Rob Baxter Music Disc II

Three Magnificat Fugues by Johann Pachelbel
Two Chorale Preludes by Johann Sebastian Bach

"More organ music. I decided to round side one off with some short compositions by Pachelbel & Bach. I was tempted to call the file PACHBACH, but discretion got the better of me and I settled on ORGAN.LNK. Thank Heavens!! These lovely little pieces are quite relaxing to listen to and the Amstrad manages a fairly credible impersonation of a small pipe organ."

"Pachelbel was a German organist and composer who lived from 1653 to 17:06. As a composer of fugal material for organ he was an important precursor of J.S. Bach. The three pieces presented here are taken from 94 organ verses he composed on the eight tones of the 'Magnificat' and are perfect examples of the organ fugue. It is worth noting that Pachelbel was a personal friend of J.S. Bach's father.

The two Bach Preludes in this section are 'Wenn wir in hochsten Noten sein', which was dictated to his son-in-law as he lay dying. It is probably the last thing Bach ever composed (at least in this life!). The other is the much loved 'Wachet Auf, ruft uns die stimme' with its haunting chorale melody weaving in and out of the accompaniment."

HARPSICHORD CONCERTO IN F MINOR

From the Rob Baxter Music Disc II (1987)

"Bach pioneered the keyboard concerto as a valid form. A notable example of this is the Fifth Brandenburg Concerto. The work on this disc, along with its three companion pieces were transcriptions by Bach of concerti written for other instruments. Scholars are not even sure that the originals were even written by Bach himself. It has been suggested Vivaldi wrote the F Minor concerto as a work for violin but this is not substantiated. More recent research has indicated that it was composed by an (as yet) unknown German composer. Keyboard concerti were a rarity in Bach's day because the Harpsichord, and even more so the Clavichord were weak toned instruments more suited to thee intimate surroundings of chamber music than being pitted against the might of orchestra in anything other than a continuo role.
The file CONCERTO.LNK contains all three movements of this short concerto. They are: ALLEGRO, LARGO AND PRESTO."

The CHROMATIC FANTASIA & FUGUE.  J.S. BACH

As ever there is an excellent use of CPC stereo throughout the transcription.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H9n5-9Ckqno (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H9n5-9Ckqno)

From the Rob Baxter MUSIC DISC IV

"The Fantasia is most uncharacteristic of Bach's work, being a seeming departure from his normally precise, almost mathematical style of composition. Glenn Gould, one of this century's foremost Bach authorities went so far as to describe it as a "...monstrosity...". He then went on to say that it represented as much as anything, Bach the Improviser as opposed to Bach the Organiser! During the Baroque period, improvisation was just as important as composition. Bach probably improvised just as many great Toccatas and Fantasias to be lost forever, as he wrote down - if not more!
The Fugue which follows echoes the chromatic nature of the Fantasia, but in a lighter and more positive mood."

The Sailors Hornpipe
From the Rob Baxter disc "Short Works" from 1988.

Delightful (if far too short) piece played on The Advanced Music System that

was transcribed originally for the earlier Music System released in 1986.

Music starts at 3:34.

'Jerulusalem' (abridged) transcribed to the CPC in 1988 by Rob Baxter.
In this video I'll play the above short piece of music using The Advanced Music System, reset the 6128 and then play the music file from 'Elite' (ripped by an unknown cracker in the late eighties or early nineties) and finally Run the (originally silent) BASIC 'Notes' program on Drive B.
Silent no more.

From 'Notes':
"To get the best from your Amstrad sound chip you MUST connect your computer to your stereo hi-fi. The computer's little built in speaker is utterly useless for music of any quality and you will be missing so much if you rely on that alone. The Amstrad computer's wonderful stereo ability by itself is worth that little extra effort!"  True indeed.

Suite in E minor by Jean-Philippe Rameau

Harpsichord music from 'Music Disc IV' transcribed to the CPC in 1987 by Rob Baxter.
The music starts at 3:26 but I'd also suggest jumping to 10:40 if you want to hear
something special.

Listening with headphones or a Hi-Fi system with good stereo separation is recommended.

Now if you're a cultural philistine (like wot I am) your only exposure to classical music will
be long forgotten music classes at school, TV ads, movies and other mass media sources.
So try to put away any preconceptions you might have and listen to this as MUSIC that was
transcribed and recorded ON THE CPC.

Alastair Scott, programmer and writer for various computer magazines including Popular Computing Weekly and Amstrad Computer User, writing in the September 1988 issue of WACCI magazine stated: "The zenith has to be the the Rameau suite, which is the best music I have ever heard on a CPC.".
