Title: Which ROM tools are you using?
Post by: m_dr_m on 10:09, 18 January 21
I hope the title is self-explanatory, but here is some context.
There are gazillions of ROMs for the CPC, old or new. CPCWiki does a great job listing them, but it's hard to know which one would be useful now.

So, if you can tell about the ROMs you like and why, I would greatly appreciate that.
I've seen a similar thread in the past, but I guess it's worth refreshing.
According to Nostramstradus, 2021 will be a CPC year.

I'll start:

* 1: Dobbertin R-DOS to have a 444 KB RAM disc
* 2: LambdaSpeak ROM for the LS
* 3: Maxam 1.15 to have an assembler
* 4, 5: Protext (and it's expansion ROM, not used that often, but it's there)
* 5: - sometimes - V-DOS to drive my double 5,25" Vortex drive with 1,4 MB (= 2x 700)
* 6: X-DDOS to have the great !COPY command and to access my hard disc
* 6: - sometimes - M4 ROM
* 7: Amsdos/Parados
* (10, 16-18): FutureOS
* (19-22): Expansion ROMs for FutureOS, TextEditor, ROManager, Apps, Wallpaper...

Greater projects like Orgams and iMPdraw get installed temporarily, this depends what's needed in the hour of usage.  :) :) :)

This was the state of play back in 95 for a combined business/games 6128 Plus.
And courtesy of repairs by @Bryce (https://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=225) it is the state of play today :)

For 21st century usage most of these Rom's are used for examining 25/30 year old discs/disks and file transfer from 3" to 3.5" or sometimes file transfer to Gotek.

DES - for looking thru the contents of 3.5" PCW format disks.
DosCopy - for looking thru the contents of PC format disks
Parados - mass file copying
Nirvana - for copying "naughty" formats that won't run from drive B.
CPM - guess what?
Vidi - for loading screens from some games and slideshows
Protext - used in writing the text for some of my YT videos
Utopia - romon/romoff
