Great stuff.. Remember thoose huge drives from the early days...

But does anyone actually have a working 8" drive?

And does it work on the CPC?

I don't have one, but 8in drives should work without an issue on a CPC.

They work like HD drives. To connect them to a CPC it's needed to double up the FDC speed. In addition some minor changes must be made.

My 8" drive was running at a Genie IIIs, they had 1,7 MB formatted capacity. But they needed to go, because they do need lot's of space.

It's nice for a museum, but another thing for everyday usage.

I'm guessing this isn't a CPC-related ad and should be moved to Other...

Well, I know at least one person who did use an 8" floppy with an CPC (and no, the effort is not worth). But feel free to move the topic where you fell well with.  :)

The first PC I had was a Canon AS-100, back in late 1987.   This had 8" disks (cannot remember if there was HD and one floppy, or two floppies.   The machine was loaned from my new job, to get familiar with one of the software projects I was to take over, but I thought the 8" disks were pretty cool.   I was already well used to the 5.25 disks (from my use of the HX-20 and my PCW), and of course the PCW had the 3" disks as well, but the 8" disks just looked so much - well - bigger!

In due course, the machine got taken away, and I had to go back to 5.25, then 3.5, etc, etc, but I always hoped to get 8" again.

A few years ago I inherited a box of new 8" disks, but never had anything to use them on.   Then I rescued a chunk of an IBM DisplayWriter system, comprising the drive unit (2 @ 8" drives, build like a battleship, totally separate component everything) but soon discovered that the drives were so far from compatible with anything that it would be impractical to do anything with it.   I've got the manual for it, but I think parts of the system are in the main unit which I did not keep.

Still, something to dream about, when I've got nothing better to play with?   Try to get the 8" drives working with my PCW?
